I'll pass on 2 things that my Pop told me were so important.
In his words, "Be quiet as a church mouse." And move very, very slowly. Deer are quite keen at detecting even the slightest movements, whether looking directly at your position or not.
If you think you hear something, no matter how tempting, don't just swivel your head. Myself Islowly swing my eyes to the direction as far as I can and then stop and listen a bit, then s-l-o-w-l-y turn my head, little bit, by little bit.
Then I see the squirrel.
