I'm not trying to stir up the bucket here . But Mmy savage 308 is 1-12 and my 3006 clocks on cleaning rod at 1-8.5 maybe 1 was a spec order . the 308 won't shoot 180s. the 06 doesnt shoot anything well over 2650 fps . spent $200 on factories 25 on lc42 hours at the range scope, mounts etc handloaded 50.3 4350 cci large rifle hornady 3033 cover 10 with a sivler dollar ,cast bullets exit in a cloud a 2100.
Well, let's see here ...if your '06 really has a 1/8.5" twist, it certainly would have to be a custom job, as no US barrelhas ever rifled .308" barrels in that twist,
for a hunting rifle ... for long-range target work with the 220 or 240-grain Sierra Matchkings, maybe!!
Regarding your 1/12" twist .308, (which is standard for that caliber) the two .308's I had with 1/12" twists worked very well with bullets up to the 220-grain Hornady roundnoses, and everything lighter than that. My load with the 220 was 48 grains of Norma N205, and later, 48 of MRP. It was a great deer-stopper up to 150 yards or so, with a MV of 2300 FPS.
