Over time all striker tips will start to "smooth over" no matter what surface you use them on.

Sand the tip to open the poors of the wood back up. (I use either a Scotch-Brite pad or sand paper in about 180 to 220 grit.)

Also, for a more mellow striker that is a bit easier to use, round the tip over. For a louder and more brash sound, leave the tip flat.
