In addition to the quality of the overall gun another feature that I looked for was balance. That is, did the gun put most of its weight between my hands. Everyone has their likes and dislikes. Having shot competitively I liked the weight evenly distributed.

Also you didn't mention what you were primarily going to use the gun for. The ony reason I bring it up is because if you buy one of the ultra light o/u and plan on shooting a lot of sporting clays with it, you will soon enjoy the game a lot less because of the punishment in the form of recoil it will deal out. However that same gun will be a joy to carry around in the field if your purpose is for hunting only.

For the money Browning is hard to beat and unless it is used, it will be on the high end (usually higher) of your stated budget.

I don't think you will find a new Beretta in your price range.

SKB, although I have never owned one they seem like a decent gun for the money.

Ruger, I have never liked the balance of their o/u but a lot of guys shoot them. Of all the guns at the club where I shot the ruger was in the shop for repairs more than any other brand.

There are of course cheaper models from not so well known manufacturers. I own one in a 28 ga.. If your only going to shoot the gun now and then these might fit your bill. But if you plan on shooting it fairly often I wouldn't buy one. I don't think they will stand up to the punishment in the long run.

Good luck.
