I guess I got lucky when I bought my 597. It is the best semi-auto 22 I have owned.And I have owned several 10/22's and 1 Marlin.
Never had a malfunction and at fifty yrds. you can empty the clip and cover the holes with a dime.(cheap Winchester ammo)
The Marlin would be my second choice.
