RE: OOPS, I screwed up
Chuck, keep the reel from getting full. I usually leave about 1/8" left or even a little more. A pick is usually a good tool to get the nests out rather than a knife. When I get them and we all do from time to time I usually push my thumb down on the reel and hit the thumb bar and turn the reel while pushing down on the line. It often will give you some slack and you can get the birds nest out. Other tips I can give is try to not cast hard into the wind if possible. Unless you are skilled at level wind reels and have a good quality reel it is inviting a real bad nest. Once you get used to them there is no more efficient way to fish things like spinner baits jerk baits and deep divers. I still like spinning rods and reels for Carolina and finesse fishing with light tackle. If you ever get the chance to try out one of those newer models that cost a fortune don't do it. It will be hard to go back because they work so well and actually cover up mistakes. With the high end reels I can trhow even the lightest baits into the wind and they just sail. Still ice in front of the house so it will be a few weeks yet for me...Good fishing buddy
