Unfortunately many Omegas will not shoot many conicals other than powerbelts. Mine won't. If it would shoot the 460 grain No excuses, I would shoot those. All the others mentioned are good elk medicine too.
And don't believe the hype that you have to shoot 150 grains of powder for elk! Not true. Since you will be required to shoot only open sights, and thereby limiting your shots to say 150 yards (my limit is 100 yards), then any heavy conical with a powder combo over 80 grains will do the job. My best elk loads use between 90-100 grains of 777 and 90-110 grains of pyrodex. Just remember that many buffalo fell to the 45-70 (45 caliber with 70 grains of blackpowder).
