Thanks man!

I roosted them tonight, lets hope they wanna play in the morning. I was going to take off all day and hunt but I think I will just go into work a couple hours late.

superstrutter 04-20-2014 07:39 PM

DTC, you need to get your priorities straight. Take the whole day off.

Well the rain held out long enough. Birds were henned up early and didn't want anything to do with a call. About 8:30 they fired back up and started gobbling again. I finally got him to answer me twice and then I gave him the ole silent treatment. 25 minutes later he gobbled and they were about 50 yards, his next gobble about 30, and his final gobble was at 18 steps. I was shocked when I saw 4 toms strolling. I took my "pick" of the litter. 20 1/2 lbs, 11 1/2" beard, and 7/8" spurs. I can tell we had a rough winter, this is one of the smallest weight birds I've killed on that farm in about 10 years.

BIG DONNIE BRASCO 04-21-2014 03:48 PM

Looks like you popped him in the head!!
Great job my friend!

Mottz 04-21-2014 05:49 PM

Awesome Job DTC!!!

superstrutter 04-21-2014 07:04 PM

Good job DTC. Your bird scores 61.That gives us a total score of 699.0875 ( 11 birds ) and a best bird per hunter score of 337.825. Five of us have killed at least one bird. Hopefully we'll here from everyone else pretty soon. Now go get you another bird DTC.

DTC 04-22-2014 06:02 AM

Thanks guys!!

Donnie I bought those new Winchester XR shells, very impressed with them. The pattern at 40 and 50 yards is crazy good!!

I can't hunt again until the 28th, MO only allows 1 bird in the first week. DTC Jr and I will be looking to get back after them. The 10 day forecast has lots of rain in it.

BIG DONNIE BRASCO 04-22-2014 06:47 AM

Headed out Sat for another big old fat Tom !

turkman1 04-24-2014 05:30 PM

Great job DTC Nice tuckey

turkman1 04-24-2014 05:35 PM

I just got back from Texas. I didn't see no big toms just two hens. My worse hunt ever.

superstrutter 04-24-2014 06:44 PM

That's too bad. Where in Texas were you hunting?

My real hunts have not even started yet. IL has some decent public, but nothing like Wisconsin. But as a nonresident I can only get the later season tags. I have 4 of them, all in May. I expect to take at least 2 toms. First hunt there starts May 1st.

turkman, Wow you should have just stayed home and hunted on Choutaou Island like I did. It sucked equally, but without the travel expense! :confused0024:

DTC 04-25-2014 09:56 AM

I know it doesn't help our team any but my buddy from OK that has the leases in TX we hunt came in to hunt with us in MO. He killed 1 on our farm this morning. He was a pretty good bird. Swap hunts can be a great way to hunt other areas at a fraction of the cost.

BIG DONNIE BRASCO 04-26-2014 05:21 PM

BEST HUNT OF MY LIFE!
Had my beautiful wife with me, and had this tom LITERALLY in our laps for 10 minutes!

He was determined to find where he was hearing the "hen" and since we were each just sitting motionless against a tree, he was spitting and drumming within 36 INCHES of us! This was my first time hunting IN the forest.

You talk about a rush! I didn't take the shot until he looked like he was going to lose interest. WOW.. what a show!

April 26, 2014

A bit of advice... don't try and take that turkey foot from her! She gets so excited when I gt home with a bird because she knows she's gonna get the feet.

mmmmmmm.........delish!

Just can't let my fiancée see that. She's Chinese and that is their favorite part.

Can you find the chicken feet dish at one of our spring festival banquets?

superstrutter 04-27-2014 05:15 PM

Good job and a great bird Donnie. Your bird scores 64.5

superstrutter 04-27-2014 06:11 PM

Arjuna and Phish, you guys still alive? Haven't heard from a few of you in a while. What's going on? We're still in first, but there are a lot of guys out there just now hunting and some who haven't even started. Our total score is 763.5875 ( 12 birds ). Best bird per hunter is still 337.825.

turkman1 04-28-2014 02:43 AM

Great job Donnie that a nice bird.

BIG DONNIE BRASCO 04-28-2014 11:37 AM

I am a crazy redneck, but I actually love eating "unusual" food items! I have eaten chicken feet on a few occasion, and although I will say the flavor was good... I need a little more substance to my meals :)

Tagged out in MO! I had an awesome hunt this morning. Got on a bird that gobbled his but off. Once he flew down I could tell he and his hens were headed to a big field. I got in front of them and when I called he gobbled and so did another gobbler. I could tell both birds were coming in. I finally see a bird enter the field about 70 yds strutting. He finally cut the distance to 40 yards and I was thinking about ending it but was enjoying the show. He was in a field, what could go wrong?? All of a sudden he breaks out of strut and runs off. I was dumbfounded as to what just happened. From my left I see a bigger bird running in strutting. I finally got him stopped and let him have it. 24 lbs, 1 5/16" spurs, and a 9 3/4" beard. I will post a pic later today. Now if I can only get DTC Jr on another bird.

Mottz 04-29-2014 02:28 PM

Great job BDB and DTC!

BIG DONNIE BRASCO 04-29-2014 03:28 PM

Unless I can get a Nebraska bird... I might be done.

superstrutter 04-29-2014 04:22 PM

Awesome bird DTC. Your bird scores 69.75. That will replace your previous high score. Just make sure you post a picture here so I can post the score on the score thread. Congrats

There is a chance I might make a trip to NE. Just depends on
my buddy's schedule.

DTC Jr 04-30-2014 04:18 PM

Nice bird dad!

BIG DONNIE BRASCO 05-01-2014 03:11 AM

Ditto... but ill still likely be hunting Easterns or hybrids.... still dreaming of a Merriam!

Ya well as you can imagine I had to tip toe around a lot of the traditional local food while on my visit to Sichuan, including the chicken feet. Tried them once and decided to stick to american food. Avoided the pig's knuckles and my all time least favorite.......fish head soup. Went to this one restaurant called "Fish Head & Frog Hot Pot". And literally, those were the only two things on the menu. I opted for frog, but they came in the spicey oily soup whole, tons of tiny bones to sift through. My favorite was a very popular street vendor food, squid-on-a-stick. Loved those.

DTC 05-01-2014 06:23 AM

Donnie we might have to meet up and make a NE run. I have a buddy that has tons of land to hunt in Newport. That is right on the SD line, we have killed some real pretty merriams there. I have made 3 trips there and we have killed 15 turkeys. It is crazy good.

BIG DONNIE BRASCO 05-01-2014 11:27 AM

Don't tease me my friend... I would drop everything and head out!!

I have always wanted to get a Merriam, or a Goulds!

That a nice turkey DTC.

superstrutter 05-02-2014 03:16 PM

Guys, we're no longer in the lead in best bird per hunter. Our score is 346.575. Our total bird count is 13 for a score of 833.3375. Let's kill some birds and regain the lead. Is everyone hunting now?

DTC 05-03-2014 07:59 AM

Rough morning for Jr and I. Things just wouldn't work out. We will go back at it again in the morning.

Donnie I'm serious about the NE hunt. I've meet some super people through this website. My grand slam was completed with the help of people from hunting.net

Mottz 05-03-2014 07:09 PM

After the last 2 weekends working on odd jobs, helping other people with their construction projects, I am finally able to get out tomorrow and try to locate some birds. I hope I'm not going to be the guy on the team that holds us back so I'm going to go in there with success on my mind!

turkman1 05-04-2014 02:42 PM

I been hunting over the weekend 3 jakes came right to me No shot, two big toms with hens to far away. But I did shoot a coyote with my bow running at my decoys.

turkman1 05-08-2014 02:50 AM

Its my last weekend of turkey hunting.

Zim 05-09-2014 12:59 AM

Just returned from my first 4 day hunt in Wisconsin Zone 3. New Property found on their interactive map application. Hunted hard but no dice. Did battle with the most educated tom I ever seen. Was working a 5 acre field between his roosting spot and the hens. 4 times I moved my setup and he crossed the field on the opposite side, right past my prior setups every time. One touch to my slate call and he ran like hell! From 200+ yards away! On top of this, he hardly ever gobbled in the morning, but always got fired up 5-6 PM. Go figure.

Headed to my #1 spot this weekend for a 3 day hunt. My best bet. Saw 13 jakes in one group there last year. All will be mature for this season. But still got 2 hunts afterwards, up to May 27th.
