turkman1 03-08-2014 04:59 PM

Good to see you on the team nys-buckstalker

superstrutter 03-08-2014 05:40 PM

Looks like we almost have a complete team. If anybody wants to be captain, step up, if not I will take the reigns. I guess our team name will be Long Spur Legion. Let's lay some longbeards down, or jakes if you like.

Zim 03-08-2014 11:25 PM

Checking in here from western Chicago burbs. I hunt public land in southern IL & throughout Wisconsin. Already drew 2 IL tags & one in WI, but leftovers go on sale next week.

Checked in kinda late because the winter has been so brutal this year I just have not even been thinkin birds yet. Doing a lot of western big game apps though.

I took the highest scoring bird in this contest in 2012, and the lowest scoring in 2013. But I always score one or two toms/year.

phish500 03-10-2014 06:04 AM

phish500 checking in:
Sorry abot the delay...will be hunting in NC.

JW 03-10-2014 08:06 AM

Good luck people as I see all team members have checked in.

Hey Be Safe Out There!

DTC 03-10-2014 11:57 AM

Going to be in the 70's tomorrow. I had another
tom show up on one of our farms this week. TX
youth season is March 22-23, my buddy is sending
tons of pics. Sure looking forward to taking DTC Jr
out there.

superstrutter 03-10-2014 05:16 PM

DTC, where in Texas are you and jr. hunting? I usually hunt in south Texas around Three Rivers, Christine, and Goliad. I occasionally hunt around Lipan in northern Texas. I used to hunt the LBJ Grasslands, but there are very few birds and very many hunters there these days.

Mottz 03-10-2014 05:50 PM

Call me an idiot superstrutter, but I just realized we are on the same rifle contest team:s6: I haven't looked at that contest for quite awhile because there is no action on there. Maybe I need to pay a little more attention!

BIG DONNIE BRASCO 03-10-2014 06:02 PM

counted 70+ birds in a single flock yesterday........ on PUBLIC land !!

I'm taking my 11 yr old daughter on Apr 1st, then my wife on the 9th, then... stand back! :)

I smell a trophy for the Long Spur Legion team !

Thats awesome. I spotted 29 on Saturday and thought that was alot, but 70+... Thats insane. Happy Hunting my friend.

Also, how did you get your wife envolved? I'm trying to talk my wife into it, but no such luck. Any pointers?

Not only were we on the same team, I believe we won the contest. Let's do the same in the turkey contest.

BIG DONNIE BRASCO 03-11-2014 06:09 AM

After many years, this is her FIRST year ever wanting to be involved.

I am a strict, lean-and-mean, sit on the ground kind of turkey chaser, but for the wife I am setting up a blind. She is not hunting, just watching the process. I think she just finally realized how passionate I am about turkey hunting and decided to see what it's all about..... I'll have her shooting a bird by next year! :)

As for the 70+ birds, that is a first for me! I have never seen more than 20-30 in a single flock before now.

I see a few of you guys are from down south. I just got back from two work stints down on the gulf, first in Mississippi, and the second in Alabama. Was a nice break as we have been buried in quite a bit of snow this year up here in Chicago area. I did Mardis Gras in Mobile, and went snapper fishing out of Orange Beach. Caught biggest snapper on our party boat at 14.4#. Water was like glass. 0 mph wind.

I'm back home now, but driving down Monday to my public draw turkey hunting area near St. Louis to work for a week. Will get to scout this new area where I drew 2 tags April 7-11.

DTC 03-11-2014 06:24 AM

Going to be almost 80 today and snow tomorrow. You have
to love the weather in MO.

superstrutter 03-12-2014 06:13 AM

Ten days and counting! DTC, look at post #49 page 5. I was just wondering where you were hunting in Texas.

Ya I saw that yesterday when I was putting my travel itinerary together. But it looks great for next week when I'll be outside inspecting facilities. Sunny & 50's.

I'll be hunting Chouteau Island just NE of St. Louis. Been warned of past criminal activity there. But at least I'll have a shotgun in April. :)

Arjuna 03-12-2014 01:31 PM

Heading out this friday afternoon to see if I can roost a bird for Saturday's opener. I'll keep you guys informed.

Arjuna 03-12-2014 01:36 PM

here's a pic of one of my favorite bird hunts a couple of years ago...

This guys was with his ladies in a cut cotton field and I busted the flock up. Set up back in the spot where I broke them up and an hour later, this guy came in to see if his girls were ready to finish their dance. It was a great hunt.

turkman1 03-13-2014 02:14 AM

Good luck I hope you get a big one Arjuna. That will be great if you would start us out.

turkman1 03-13-2014 02:23 AM

I vote for superstrutter to be the captain.

Turkman

He has my vote too

superstrutter 03-13-2014 05:34 PM

I guess since nobody else has expressed interest in being captain, I'll do it. I feel good about this team. I think we will do well.

nys-buckstalker 03-14-2014 04:22 AM

Season here doesn't start till May 1 st. Have been seeing a lot of birds but all still trying to winter it out. Am seeing a few good toms.

OK SS, You are hired. I see a lot of your Louisiana plates in the parking areas of JEPC here in Illinois for the archery deer season. They still sell out there every year even though the quality has nose dived since 2007. Pathetic these days but people still keep coming.

There's too many hunters in Illinois for the public land available, even for just turkey. The leftover tags suck after the 1st draw so I go to Wisconsin where quality tags are abundant.

turkman1 03-14-2014 05:29 AM

There are a lot of turkey hunter in IL. I send out for 3 tags and just got one. I hope I can get one more. I hope Texas and Neb is good. I just hunter with a bow but I get 3 turk a year. I do think we have a great team if we all go out a kill a bird.

Zim 03-14-2014 10:21 AM

turkman1, What part of Illinois you live in? I'm northern but trael the entire state due to my work inspecting buildings.

We hunt in Wheeler County in the panhandle. My buddy leases
some land out there and we swap hunts almost every year.

You just need to put your foot down and tell him who is boss and to find another place to hunt.

I live in Canton 45 min. from Peoria

superstrutter 03-15-2014 12:29 PM

Birds were finally gobbling today. Heard four birds this morning. Got two of them on film strutting for the hens. One more week and it all begins. I guess this warmer weather finally has them going.

Yes I know Canton. I have inspected your post office several times, en route between Bushnell & Pekin offices. Drew a Spoon River turkey tag a few years ago. They used this awesome razor sharp shale in their parking lots which sliced open one of my jeep tires.

DTC 03-16-2014 07:09 PM

70 degrees on Saturday and 4" of snow today in MO. Looking forward to the warm temps of TX this weekend for youth turkey
season. Can't wait to get back out there with DTC Jr. I love our
hunting trips together.

Mottz 03-16-2014 07:31 PM

Good luck in Texas! I need to switch my mind to turkey. Frost is finally getting out of the ground so I'm in metal detecting mode. But once I get our NWTF banquet done with I'll be ready to get out there.

I'm on a 2 1/2 year cycle so will check schedule. I can't forget this one boss Spoon River tom playin peek a boo with my decoys for almost an hour before slipping out. Also a massive blue heron rookery back on the river.

JSwafford1121 03-17-2014 04:04 AM

Well it seems that Team 2 got the first kill of the contest.

turkman1 03-18-2014 03:05 PM

Did anyone hear if Arjuna got a turkey.
