Hey guys I got one in Kansas. Weather was really bad. My buddy's who were suppose to come up Sunday morning did not b/c of the weather so I decided to pack it in and all go back in a few weeks. Looked like we made the right decision they got a couple of inches of snow last night. I will pair pics and story when I get more time

Phil from Maine 04-14-2014 07:08 AM

Congrats swampbuster!! We can hardly wait to see the pics and hear your story!! Frigging snowing down there?? That does not sound very good! Your bird will give the team 3 hunters and 3 birds which will be putting us pretty close to the lead in the number of hunters and the number of birds.. Combined score could very well put us out in front.. Congrats again swampbuster!! Yaaaa Hooooo ! This is starting out really good for us and I am hoping when we get everyone out hunting we can close the deal!

Up here it is 60 out right now.. Our snow is melting and I hope it clears from the dirt road I travel in a hurry.. I want the frost to come out before the 28th if it can.. That frost coming out can bury a vehicle.. We had graters disappear when the frost comes out.. I am hoping with our snow pac that is never got to deep..

swampbuster 04-14-2014 08:27 AM

Congrats blackheel that's a stud!! Hey Phil how is this contest being scored?

Phil from Maine 04-14-2014 09:05 AM

They take the best bird each member gets and add them up.. That is how it has always been done.. So the team with the biggest bird may not be the winning team.. I was on a team 2 years ago and we had the biggest bird but lost in total birds harvested per member and the size of them all. They do give good mention for the heaviest bird and some sort of butterball award for getting it.. Of course it is just honorable mentioning ect.. So we are standing a very good chance of getting this title..

Keep at em guys and stay safe!! As stated before it is not a real factor if you succeed or not in getting a turkey just enjoying your time out there is a big part of this. Getting one is a bonus to a great day out in the great out doors.. Naturally we are all routing for each other to bring home the birds! Having any trouble getting one to come in? There is quite a few of us willing to give some suggestions. Each case can be different just like each bird is different.. So as we continue along feel free to share with us..

Congrats again guys on your success.. I can hardly wait until the 28th gets here!!

Phil from Maine 04-14-2014 09:07 AM

To help clear any confusion I copied this from the contest rules for you all..

Only one bird per hunter is used for this contest to determine High Team standings. Multiple birds shot by any one hunter, the hunter has the right to upgrade his score as the highest score can be used to replace a previously registered harvested bird. We will also use an Overall Team standing using all birds taken by any one team. We will also try to keep record for the best Rio, Eastern, Merriam, or Osceola so make sure you tell us the specie.
Only birds harvested during any given state’s Spring Season taken in an ethical manner under “Fair Chase” using either a Shotgun (Conventional or Black Powder) or Bow can be entered.
Also make sure you let me know whether it is an eastern or Rio ect.. I may end up getting confused on one of the other breeds as I am only used to eastern up here..

I have also added the link for scoring each bird so any one can check to make sure I never messed it up or anything.. http://www.nwtf.org/all_about_turkeys/turkey_score.html

Congrats guys, my opening day went a little like this... Heard 6 Gobblers early in the morning and went to setup on them then all the sudden silent. Wound up calling in 5 hens no Tom's. But thats why its called Hunting not Turkey Shooting lol. Season just started so look for more updates. Congrats to all who bagged one!!!!

Phil from Maine 04-14-2014 11:03 AM

mmorgan.. You are hearing them and seeing the hens is a big plus ! Last year one 1 of mine I never heard a thing and then 3 hens and 2 toms showed up. You just never know what they are going to do. Keep at em and sooner or later one will show up. If no luck after a couple more days try working the hens and get them going. There is nothing like having a live decoy to hunt with.. Good Luck to you.. The team will be watching to see if any one has any luck..

camokenny 04-15-2014 08:53 AM

Another one for the team. Not much to tell for a story got out of the truck and he gobbled about 400 yards to the south. Got to the west side of him and only made a couple of series of yelps and there he was at 12 yards in full strut. Game over till I get to neb.
Eastern in Iowa.
22 lbs
10 inch beard.
1 inch spur
7/8 inch spur
Shotgun

camokenny 04-15-2014 08:55 AM

Bad phone service will upload pics when its better.

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 07:26 AM

Any way you can e-mail them to me? If you can I should be able to post them up for you.. If not send threw text message perhaps and I can transfer them on here?? I sent you my cell info threw e-mail so I can try and help you.
Thanks, Phil

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 08:08 AM

I know some are using the I Phones and Smart Phones ect.. and are having trouble getting pics up.. If you happen to have a camera and a USB connection the pics can be uploaded to your computers by using that USB cable providing it fits your phone. Then they would need to be uploaded in your picture files on here before posting..Then open up the pictures and copy the url for each one and post it that way. Is actually the only way I can think of how to do it. Good Luck at getting the pics up..

swampbuster 04-16-2014 08:30 AM

Any way, I have sent the pics to Phil and he will post them for me(thanks Phil) I got on this turkey last Saturday night and could only get him to 80yards or so. He didn't really want to leave the hens he was following. I know the area well and knew we're he would be roosting and new were to set up on him in the morning. The next morning I got set up and could hear him gobbling, he was a good ways off but he was heading my way. I would call sparingly to him and he would respond. I was finally able to see him strutting my way. I knew by the missing tail feather that he was definitely the turkey from the evening before. He came in gobbling, strutting, and drumming. I let him put on a show until I couldn't stand it anymore. I shot him at twenty yards.

I shot him Sunday morning at 7:40
19.2lbs
9in beard
Left spur 7/8
Right spur 15/16
Rio

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 08:54 AM

Swampbuster's turkey.. I have this for your score.. Your score is 19.125 + 9.375 + 8.75 + 18 = 55.25 Any thing I may have missed left me know.. While I am not 100% sure but, I am thinking that is a very big bird for a Rio!! Congrats again!

swampbuster 04-16-2014 09:01 AM

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 09:03 AM

I have him down for Iowa.. But we need to get the pictures up..

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 09:32 AM

Well team we have 4 hunters and will soon 4 birds in our team scores once we get the pics!! Hoo Rah! We are getting it done! Good Luck to those of you out hunting as well as those that have already added to our team! We will be getting more birds as we go along and I am itching to get out!

A lot of our snow has left us now and we have some hi water levels as a result of a huge rain that came threw here last night.. But that means the snow in the woods is leaving us slowly as well. So on the 28th hunting should be going great up here if all goes to plan.. ( which never does ) I will be adding to our scoring though then. So keep at em guys we are going to win this thing! If anyone is getting stuck on these wise old birds let us know so we can try and give a few suggestions.. Go Team Go!

If I understood camokenney correctly I thought he was saying he will be hunting in Nebraska next

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 01:24 PM

He maybe I would have to go back and check.. but this turkey is from Iowa..
Perhaps I am misunderstanding??

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 01:29 PM

I am posting Camokenny's turkey for him as well..

Congrats again camokenny !!

swampbuster 04-16-2014 01:30 PM

I went out and listened on some public ground this morning and didn't hear anything. Our season starts Saturday and I still have not heard the first gobble.

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 01:54 PM

The weather has been strange all over the country and I am finding every thing here is at least a month behind.. I am not sure if that will help you or not but if you can think about where that will put them it maybe of some help. Although last year my biggest one came in with 3 hens and another tom and never made a sound.. They can be strange acting at times.

I may take a ride in the morning to see if I can spot any. I also want to see how bad the dirt road is going up into there because of all the rain we got last night. Almost every stream is well above flood stage.. But the turkeys will be around there some place come the 28th..

camokenny 04-16-2014 01:58 PM

This bird is a Iowa bird. I still have one more tag for Iowa and three for Nebraska to fill. My next iowa tag is only good for our last season here so it will probably get filled before I go to neb. I normally go to neb before that but with a untimely move to our new house I had to change my plans somewhat. Not a problem tho cause neb is open till the last day in may.
Good luck everyone.

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 02:14 PM

I was checking the other teams out some.. What I am seeing as of right now is team 6 is going to be the team to beat.. But, we are going to beat em all. We are in an excellent position right now to be able to do it.. With 4 of our members tagging and posting birds up at the rate we are going we will be this years champions!! Thanks to all of you getting these nice turkeys posted.. Some pretty big birds I at that!!

Myself I am going to take the first half of opening week and hunt all day for a monster of a bird that had 12 hens with him last year. If I can get him we will be jumping up once again.. Man is my trigger finger starting to itch now.. Congrats team!!! We are going to get it done this year!!!

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 02:50 PM

swampbuster..

I scored your turkey at 19lbs and 2 ozs.. Now I am wondering if the is what you had meant by 19.2 lbs.. As it maybe an oz bigger?? I mean it score by lbs and ozs and 2 tenths is bigger than 2 sixteenths My math is not that great but it could add an oz or so more..

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 03:21 PM

I am curious how everyone else has been doing? Any more out hunting? Scouting? We all would love to hear from you folks as well!! We are a team and we are going to be the best team to beat in this contest! We are going to show them other fellas how it is done.. So pull up a chair and chime in. Let us know how the turkeys are in your part of the country!!

Yes 19lbs 2oz

Phil from Maine 04-16-2014 03:37 PM

Ok thanks.. I just wanted to make sure that is all..

swampbuster 04-16-2014 06:57 PM

I went and checked my cameras and the spot at my house still continues to be a no show, my other spot has produced several pics of two hens. Hope a gobbler moves in soon

swampbuster 04-17-2014 04:05 AM

Went and checked out my uncles place yesterday afternoon and I didn't see any fresh sign he said he had a lot of jakes on his place last year. Went out this morning and didn't hear any turkeys again. I don't know what's going on with these birds.

mmorgan9812 04-17-2014 04:44 AM

Big weekend planned will update.....

swampbuster 04-17-2014 04:54 AM

My season starts this Saturday as well

kellyguinn 04-17-2014 07:30 AM

Sorry guys, lost internet for a bit. Congrats to all the success out there. Camokenny I'm still gonna call just forgot to write the number down the the internet crashed lol. Probably wont make it to missouri with the way the season has been going. Want get one down here before thinking about headed that way. I've been hitting it hard, rushed a shot and missed a good one. Dang coyotes started howling and hung him up took the shot thinking he was going to turn and run, thought he was 50 yards out, he was aparrantly 88 yards out. Its amazing how hard distance is to judge when your in a mile by mile green field with no trees at all except around the fence line. Had a chance to hit a couple jakes but passed for now. I just got the avian breeder and jake in. I'm sure hoping that they work better than the cheapies I've been using.

Phil from Maine 04-17-2014 09:57 AM

We all know how loosing the internet and everything else can be.. Even more so with all these dam storms everyone keeps getting.. Most of us know how missing a bird can ruin your day as well I myself messed up like that last year on a big old tom that had 12 hens with him.. I am heading back there on the 28th when our season opens up for us.. Good Luck at getting him to come in. Either that or another big tom that comes along trying to take his place..

Good Luck Saturday mmorgan9812! We are hoping to here a big success story when you get your bird! If not we will still like to hear from you on how things are going..

Good Luck to you as well swampbuster! We hope to hear the same from you as well. If not we still like reading the stories abd all that..

Actually good luck to everyone either out hunting or soon will be! Bring back some stories for us all to read! We love hearing them while we are waiting our turn at them.. The more birds that we can get posted the more it is making me want to get out there and help the team along!!
