Arkansas was the kill state, and 7/8 on the spurs was what I had

swampbuster 04-22-2014 06:36 PM

Going back in the morning to see if me and my buddy can get on the two gobblers that I have been hearing the past few mornings. That would be awesome if we could double. Never done that before

Phil from Maine 04-23-2014 12:12 AM

Yes it would! If I am real lucky come Monday, I may end up with 2 and end my season.. I doubt that will happen and will feel pretty lucky if I happen to get a shot at 1 of them.. I have not been lucky enough to shoot 1 on opening day as of yet.. But, this year everything is behind by about a month so it may be the year !!

Hurry up Monday and get here!!

swampbuster 04-23-2014 01:40 PM

Went out this morning and heard a few gobbling but they were a ways off. Couldn't get on anything close

Phil from Maine 04-23-2014 02:14 PM

Hopefully the next time you get a chance they will be around again.. Good Luck to you..

I am hoping all those turkeys I saw yesterday will be around on Monday.. If not I am still going to make a day of it. I will be starting late that morning because of coming off nights shift.. I still should be early enough though as those birds did not appear to mind what time of day it was..

swampbuster 04-23-2014 06:27 PM

In the morning on my way to work i am going to stop by the spot that I was getting pics of those hens and hunt for a few hours. Hopefully they have moved back in there by now

swampbuster 04-24-2014 05:48 AM

No luck didn't hear or see anything. I think even those hens have moved on. Was able to make it to work on time as well. Glad I didn't use any vacation time for that spot

Phil from Maine 04-24-2014 06:04 AM

I am sorry to hear that.. You have done great so far anyways.. If you get a chance again good Luck to you!

Also if all teams has been updated we are still holding strong!! Still in second place right now and that can change for any team as more and more hunters come into their seasons! Hopefully I can get us a bird or 2 once my hunting starts up next week.. I can hardly wait after watching all these turkeys getting posted.. Hopefully this year I can get a couple for our team.. Naturally though I am hopeful to get 1 and have a decent score to help boost the team along..

I am also not sure what has been going with this site as I have had a terrible time logging on this morning.. It kept saying I used up my logging tries and need to wait 15 minutes.. That was even after I had requested a password reset.. I think it has more to do with the site though than anything else??

kellyguinn 04-24-2014 07:49 AM

Had 4 Tom's come in without hens and they stayed 400 yards out. We were having 40mph wind gusts. Not sure if that was why or if my calling wasn't sexy enough for em. Still out here. Haven't seen any since about 8

It's hard to tell what those toms are thinking about. Hang in there and reposition maybe. It will all come together just keep after them. Good luck

Yeah, it is most likely the wind messing things up.. Be careful not to over call them. I know when I mess up a lot of times it is from over calling and they end up getting farther away on me. If no luck and you can get back out there try and set up within 200 to 150 yards from where they were.. Good Luck kellyquinn the team is routing for you!

swampbuster 04-24-2014 10:43 AM

I am working on this job site right now and a small thunderstorm is coming threw. I walk outside to my truck the thunder rolls and a few seconds later a turkey gobbled. Every time it thunders he gobbles really good. The thing that is killing me is I have all my turkey gear with me. I called the guy and asked for permission but he said no. There's only one thing better than killing a turkey, and that's killing a turkey on the boss's time. Anyway still cool to hear a turkey while working

Phil from Maine 04-24-2014 11:14 AM

Yeah, that must be hard to take.. Can you hunt it on your time? If so maybe he will show himself to you.. Either way it is nice to hear them gobble at you..

I took a short drive yesterday and the road I normally travel had a big washout.. What do I do put that big truck of mine into 4 wheel drive and drove right threw it.. Most of the others kept turning around.. lol But my big truck is almost 3 feet off the ground which gave me all the clearance I need. Today it has been raining hard so I will have to check it out again before turkey season to make sure I can still travel that way. If not I can go another way anyways..

kellyguinn 04-24-2014 03:28 PM

I got good news and bad news. I caught up with those Tom's about 3/4 mile from where I saw them. They were on private that I don't have permission to hunt. I was able to set up about 1/4 mile from them on public but while I was walking to the fence line the farmer pulled up and spooked them my way. Had no time to set the decoy. Got to the nearest tree and started calling and they came right in but circled around into the thick woods. I had an opening I though so I took the shot.....smack dab in the middle of a 3" diameter tree that was 10 yards from me. I didn't notice it cause I was too focused on them.

Phil from Maine 04-24-2014 03:35 PM

Well you managed to get a shot at one so hopefully they will be around the area again.. That shot may make it a little harder next time. But, if you have a decoy or 2 out that maybe enough to get them in.. Good luck to you on them..

I just was checking the weather forecast and it is supposed to be 48 Monday with a few showers.. Then gaining temps all week with a high on Saturday of 59.. So they should be moving pretty good all next week.. I hope I will have some great news to report back to the team with..

jepcho 04-24-2014 05:08 PM

Alright guys, I'm on my way to the southern part of Iowa right now. I'm gonna be on some birds first thing in the morning. I'm so excited to finally be hunting this year. Got 3 1/2 weeks to kill two birds.

Alright!!! Good Luck to you jepcho! We will be routing for you as we are still holding our second place slot and we think we can take first before this is over.. But, whether you get a bird or not does not really matter.. Just enjoy your time out there ! Again though good luck to you..

swampbuster 04-24-2014 07:59 PM

Good luck to you guys! I am going to be heading back to the national Forrest in the morning to do a little hunting before work. Hopefully they will be in the right frame of mind

Phil from Maine 04-25-2014 12:19 AM

Good luck everyone I hope you all get to score one!

kellyguinn 04-25-2014 03:40 AM

It came together finally this morning. Should raise my score. I'll post a pick as soon as I can

Phil from Maine 04-25-2014 06:52 AM

Congrats kellyquinn!! We can hardly wait to hear the story and see the pictures.. Way To Go !!!

Phil from Maine 04-25-2014 07:05 AM

I went and scouted around some more where I stashed my blind to see if I could see anything.. Nothing except some tracks.. I went early today though and most the birds I saw was on my drive back out of there with most of the birds showing up from 9:30 on. That was mostly hens.. I did see one longbeard as well. So the early morning thing appears to be not working as of yet.. That can change though with the warmer temps coming up this way..

swampbuster 04-25-2014 09:31 AM

Well got close this morning but not close enough. Took my boat and went across the lake and we didn't hear anything on our side. We walked and called and listened but didn't hear anything. Finally we started hearing a few different birds on the other side of the lake. We headed back to the boat and to the other side of the lake. We pulled the boat up walked up the bank and a turkey shock gobbled at a woodpecker. He was fairly close so we got in stealth mode and started easing his way. We were moving really slow and my buddy who was with me, his smart phone made some kind of noise and 30seconds later he gobbled right on top of us. I don't think that the phone had anything to do with it, but I joked with him about the turkey shock gobbling at his cell phone. Anyway we both sit down immediately and I can hear him drumming and he is coming our way. I finally see him and he is about 60-70 yards. I can tell that he is not going to come by within range so I softly call to him he looks our direction for a little while and gives us fold of the wing and walks off like he sees something he didn't like. Let me back up my buddy I don't think he turkey hunts a lot. He has a shotgun with a high gloss barrel and shiney wood stock, it's a nice looking gun but not a good turkey gun. Well while we are waiting for the turkey to come in he lowers his barrel. The turkey walks out I can see him with his head up and my buddy raises his gun. He said that the turkey was behind a tree and he couldn't see him. I didn't put my decoy out because he was so close. I have been replaying the hunt and maybe I should have put my decoy out and called before I could see him. The reason I didn't is because this is public land and I'm sure he has been pressured before. I thought that by calling he would get spooked or there would be a hen with him and she would lead him away. Which there wasn't a hen, he was by himself. Give me your feedback what do you think I could have done differently to get this bird closer. (I hate taking questionable shots, and I don't want to kill a turkey at long range I want to kill him close that's the fun part for me.

kellyguinn 04-25-2014 09:36 AM

Rio
Oklahoma
Shotgun
17lbs
1" spurs
11" beard
Put the pic up when I get home

Phil from Maine 04-25-2014 11:08 AM

Way to go kellyquinn! He will surely raise your score. When you send in the picture can you add one with the beard measurement and spur measurements as well? We are supposed to have them and the Jake I figure really did not matter much. This bird will be needed it done though.. Also we need the time shot.. Thanks..

This is what I have scored for you.. Your score is 17 + 10 + 10 + 22 = 59

Phil from Maine 04-25-2014 11:32 AM

swampbuster I think that was a great call.. But, not being there myself it would be hard to say.. There is a lot of turkeys that get away from those longer shots in part because the distance can be hard to judge.. I am also inclined to agree with you on the guys shotgun may have been spotted.. While mine is not covered either I leave down on the ground until I am ready to fire it. Then I haul it up and fire only and hopefully he has turned his head when I do. A hen could of help you seeing how he was by himself. That is provided he did not see or hear you and your friend. He would of saw the hen and perhaps come in for a closer look but, that is anyone's guess. Sometimes turkey act strange and can be difficult anyways..

Phil from Maine 04-25-2014 11:42 AM

Ok guys we are closing in on team 6 right now.. They are still in the lead and hopefully when I get out there I can be of help.. Team 6 was at ( the last I checked ) 337.825 for the best bird per hunter and we are at 303.125!! Great job guys! Hopefully I can be of help and nudge us up past this team!! Also I am hoping some of the other team members can help out as well. We can win this thing and it is clearly within our reach!! For as far as the number of birds go Team 6 is way out in front of us.. With a lot of birds shot and the score currently is at or around.. 699.0875 while we currently have 391.25 .. That means 4 decent birds and we will be with in site.. Yes we can get this thing won as it is based on the score per hunter and I know we can do this!

Good Luck guys!!

swampbuster 04-25-2014 12:02 PM

Congrats kellyguinn on your turkey!

kellyguinn 04-25-2014 12:09 PM

Quick question. Do you measure the beard from where the colored part of the beard starts or from where we would cut the beard off?

kellyguinn 04-25-2014 12:49 PM

I'm having trouble posting the pics. It won't let me upload them. Can one of yall message me an email or cell to send them to. And after measuring the beard after getting it home its either 11.5 or 11.75 depending where the measurement is supposed to start.

It's funny but I have more of a story on the ones I missed. I got to the spot a little late. I was going to where I knew the jakes rooted when some owls started hootin. Low and behold I had gobbles from where I hadn't heard them before. I hurried over there but the sun had already started to lighten things up. I could see all the turkeys on the roost and though for sure they seen me walking the mile across farmers field. I set the decoy about 10 yards from where I sat down and about 100 yrds from the roosted Tom's. I gave a couple light tree yelps and I could tell they were interested. They flew down about 100 yrds behind me. I peeked around the tree and could see they were looking at my hen decoy. I slowly turned my body 90 degree so I could get a better shot. The spot where they have been ducking under the fence was right beside me but this was the only tree on the fence line so I knew I had to shoot before the came all the way in. Before I could get my gun up they had already closed the distance to 30 yards. When they got to 23 yards I quickly raised the gun, took aim and shot the first one. There were 4 all in a line and I couldn't see the beards to know which was better. All in all I probably was only at the spot 10 min. He was shot at 0630

Measure it from where that lump of skin and the beard leaves it at.. Threw the entire length of it even a few hairs sticking past the main beard counts as measurements.. The very first part of it leavin the skin..

This will kinda give yall an idea of what I was hunting. These hens came in to check out the decoy and the dead Tom lol. They are about 10 yrds away from me and didn't spook when I reached down to get my phone and turn the camera on. Lol

Phil from Maine 04-25-2014 02:10 PM

I am revising your score kellyquinn... you now have a 60! I used the 11.5 inch beard on this!!

Your score is 17 + 10 + 10 + 23 = 60

Phil from Maine 04-25-2014 02:18 PM

That is cool kellyquinn! And again congrats on a very nice bird! I am still in need of a time. an estimate would do ok.. I have your bird posted for the team as well. Great job at getting it done.. This also nudges us 1 score point closer to team 6 and I will do my best as well to help push us past them.. I hope the rest of the team has been out trying to get a bird.. But, as long as we all are enjoying this years hunting that is all that really counts.. So guys we need to try and help our fellow teamates out and blast a bird or 2..
