I've done the fillet/fry route and the whole roast route. The first one I whole roasted was probably the best turkey I've ever tasted. Used a wine vinegar and butter baste and cooked basting often. The second bird I stuffed and basted but it turned out tough. Looked good though but it was chewy.


Haven't tried it with a wild turkey but deep fried turkey is delicious.

Actually I am too.. But, it is still close enough for concern about who actually wins this.. We seen us move from second back to third and then right back up to the top.. Then camokenny put down turkzilla and gave the team one heck of a lead! So I know any team can end up pulling a rabbit out of the hat.. But we certainly are in one heck of a great position.

I also hope that from those we are not hearing from is ok.. I hope none of them were hit from those strong storms this spring..

Thanks for all the cooking ideas! I really never had anything for recipes so just tried it any way I could think of which was not much.. Another thing I do is save the legs and have the wife make a turkey stew with them as well..

Ok guys I am going to give a complete break down on the birds we all have gotten to help make it easier for the adding of scores when this contest is complete.. We currently have a total of 19 birds taken in which 7 of our team members have taken a bird for the best bird per hunter scoring.. WOW! We absolutely have a great team this year.. Congrats to all that has taken a bird..

I would also love to hear from the rest of our team members as well. Congrats to everyone trying to get that elusive gobbler.. I hope everyone has enjoyed their time in the great outdoors.. As I have always stated whether out hunting or fishing or whatever you are doing. " Being out there and getting the chance to get some game is the best part of the outing. Whether you get anything or not! Getting anything is a bonus to being able to enjoy the great outdoors. Just think of all the folks out there that would love to be able to get a chance to do what we all enjoy!" Anyone out there still hunting good luck to you!!

Dano111, if you are keeping up with this thread and are still hunting the team wishes you the best of luck on getting a bird down! We know there is only 2 more days for you and we all would love to see you blast a cap on a bird! Good Luck to you and enjoy your time out there! If your area is anything like ours the birds are starting to move again..

I just read where team 6 just got a double beard.. He already has a decent birds scored so it will only inch them closer to us now.. Which will make it easier for them to pass us with.. So it is going to be really close.. It all depends on anyone scoring a bird for the first time now..

A team six member just killed a double bearded turkey. I think he has already killed one this year, so hopefully it won't cut into the lead to much

That bird I believe after I checked his results and all, will only add to the total bird count as he already has posted a 80 + bird.. So they will still need almost 80 more points to win..

Yes it was.. But, there could be another bullet shot at us as well. I hope one of they guys we have not heard from manages to get a bird..

All we need to do is hd on for one more week. Hopefully team 6 has Memorial Day BBQ's on their mind rather than turkeys

Team 6 has one hunter who has not got a bird, that has until the 31. In south central nebraska. This could be close.

I hope we can hold on to it. There is 2 other teams as well that can be a game changer for us too.. It will be a battle to the finish line with them.. I still thinking we will win this contest.. However as we just saw it could have been a blow to us with that bird team 6 had gotten if he never all ready had one...

Team 6 has yet another bird down.. I do not see that one as being a problem either. It will add to the total number of birds score though..

How do we look on total birds Phil? Are we still in the lead in that part of the contest as well?

Oh yes!! We are very strong in that part of it.. They will need a lot more birds than 2 or 3 to catch us on that one!!

We are at 1204., They might be hitting around 1050 right now with this last bird.. So we are still very strong in that spot.. I am still concerned with our best bird per hunter spot though.. I do believe it is going to be enough for the win.. Just keep the faith on that one..

Just wanted to say that we have an average of 72 for the best bird per hunter score.. I know that I have the smallest best bird as well with a 55.6.. I actually expected that as where I hunt up here there is no big farms. They are all field and woods turkeys so having a bird up here reaching a 55 is a big bird for most cases.. The biggest spurs tagged this year at the station I tag them at is mine so far this year.. But, I feel like a lot of you who have either tagged out or your season has ended.. I wish I could keep on hunting them now.. However I did great when there is still a lot of them up here that are trying to get their first bird still..


Also for currently being in the # 1 spot all the teams have their scope on us.. After all we are currently where they all want to be, and that feels great doesn't it guys!! I have to say I am proud of this team and all the effort we have all given to it! Way To Go!

It has been a great and fun year! I have really enjoyed this years contest. We have a great team.

Been out of town for the week.

A good recipe we use is to marinate the breast cut up in nuggets in 1 cup of red wine, 1/2 cup of soy, and 2 tablespoons of honey. Then wrap with bacon and add pepper, onions, grape tomatoes, and pineapple to make some great kebobs.

Team 6 is awesome. I think there's something awful fishy about a 132 turkey. There should be an avian forensic analysis or something. Could be a case of sand baggin for glory.

LOL you should of followed me this time around Zim.. I can remember you scoring a pretty high scoring bird once.. The highest scoring bird for HNI that year.. This year we have the bird again and some really great guys.. We think we have the first place slot thanks to camokenny scoring turkzilla.. Now I know you must be just about throwing in the towel now.. Actually though i think all the teams have a great group of guys on them..

Last year the team I was on came in first in total birds scored, but as we know that's not the one that counts. Hopefully this year we will hold on to both and win this thing!

You are right swampbuster! I was poking fun at Zim because I was on a team with him before and if I can recall correctly he had the biggest bird that year and we lost.. So I am thinking Zim was just poking a little fun at us.. So I returned the favor.. He does have a bird that had not been counted when I last checked though. It is not as big as his other bird he had gotten....

I was on my way this afternoon and saw a big Tom off the side of the road. Is it next spring yet?

I saw the same thing when I was bringing my blind back. He was about 30 feet from me and just wandered slowly back towards the woods.. Go figure, he must of knew I couldn't do anything about it. Not to mention he was all by himself and less than a half hour left on legal hunting time..

I am thinking there is only 6 more days and everyone's season will come to a close.. Being in our team's position is great right now.. I hope we can hang on for those days to end...

Yes I did get the highest scoring turk in 2012, but then the lowest scoring one last year! An 11 pounder or something. This while learning several new public properties in Wisconsin. I pounded the woodlands here until I ultimately found the holy grail of turkey, where the gobblers literally come parading by daily. Nobody else knows about it I believe. I've seen a few hunters walk right past. It's money. A gap between water behind inside the woods funnels the turkey here. Had 10 mature toms walk right past, in gun range, during my last 10 hours there! And no decoys needed. Too easy.

If it is anything like up here.. They change all the time and right now I am betting they are looking for more hens..

Is that what you did on your big bird that year? Now we know what your secret was.. LOL You had better get back after those turkeys if you and your team is going to catch up to us.. Besides most of us has either tagged out or the season has ended..

You are right if he can get onto another bird.. He surely can boost our overall score up some more.. I believe we have this part of it pretty well sealed! But , as we have learned in the past none of it is over until the contest ends..

I was also just thinking this is the second time in 3 years that team 5 has had turkzilla scored on it!

I have been on team 5 from the first time I started getting into the team contest I am thinking. I can not recall the first couple of team names though. When the first turkzilla was scored I believe we was the Limb Hangers and our captain went Awohl on us and then I took over. We never heard from him again, ever.. They had some big storms in his area and we all had hoped he was ok..

Then last year we was Hang Em-High and we got hung high alright.. Now this year our name fits us well as we had really laid the smack down! The Turkey Killers and that we did do with the prospects of perhaps having another bird or 2 scored yet.. Congrats team!! Yeah Zim you should of stuck it out with us..

Me thinks those other teams are thinking it is all over but the crying.. But, we can never be sure until the the day it has closed..

While this team here had no complaints and took who ever was picked for us.. So we have won in this area regardless.. Yes, some of us knew he was a heavey hitter we have seen him before..

That is exactly what had happened and Arrowmaster said it was ok.. So they have absolutely have nothing to complain about... LOL.. Because of how long the one that made the request has been in these contests.. ( that was when filling those no shows ) ( alternates )You can read it for yourself on the alternate post on the bottom of the contest section on page 2..

No one complained as we are in it for the fun and enjoyment.. Now we get complained because we are in the winners circle right now and there is not much time left for them to beat us with.. But, yes it still can be done.. Just unlikely that is all. Now the pressure is on and we are going to want the team bragging rights.. lol keep hunting for those birds.. Who knows your team can still beat us.. Along with 2 other teams that is fairly close to us..

Get ready guys as we will soon be the champions of this contest we have all enjoyed!! We will surely be on the same team again next year! So like it or not we will be together come next spring unless some one has a giant turkeys someplace they can conquer... I am quite positive we have won this contest.. Some of you can tell by all the rassing going back and forth.. It is all in the fun of things.. So get ready to enjoy it guys!! Everyone surely will have earned once this contest comes to a close..
