Well according to usps tracking my supplies should be here tomorow!
|
I don't even use a vest anymore... I grab a couple diaghrams and a pot call and i'm on my way... i used to use the vest and carry a bunch of calls, but have found that I did not use half of what I brought... i tried to streamline it the last few years... Thermacell on my belt... face mask, gloves, gun, and bullets
|
I got my new rubber pants in as I fryed my other ones during deer season. got em too close to the propane heater - lucky I didn't torch the ole camper! :(
But the are in and fit well......I live outa MT50 stuff come turkey season. JW |
Well we got dumped on with snow. So much for scouting anytime soon. Did get my call supplies though so ill be putting a few together!
|
Well I bit the bullet and am planning on a TN run 4/7. that ought to be good for a bird or two.

Here's a dumb question for those of you who hunt around the country. How do you find these places that you hunt? Is it public land you go to or do you know people that let you in on private lands? I've never hunted outside the state of Maryland as I was born and raised here and have always had access to some sort of private land, and now that I'm in western Maryland I have access to what little public land our state has. But obviously, MD isn't a big place, and I'd love to hunt birds other than easterns one day. But since I don't really know anyone in other states, nor have I been to most states that aren't on the east coast, I'm not sure what the best course of action would be to expand my hunting range.
|
Maybe try swapping a hunt with another member. Or research state land in other states. I have been planning a hunt in either pa or ohio at somepoint. Maybe the midwest someday

Sounds great actually. Great purrs and soft yelps!

Man that looks like my ice fishing bait container.......
How do you find other places to hunt? Well the internet and this contest as a few others has been very good to me. That TN hunt well was my 1st internet date....and it was a lady who has 106 acres in the hills to which I met another older lady with 800! Way cool. The 800 was off limits to me until I took her grandson out and bang.......I can come and go as I please. I hunted with a member here after I got an invite out of the clear blue. Was a thank you so to speak as I just stepped up and helped him with a computer problem. Hunted GA 2 times. Long ride for this ole northern boy and not real keen on snakes! :( In my home state I write letters asking for permission in areas I target that has birds. I use a plat map and now most counties have a GIS system that allows me to see the plat electronically and I can get addresses as well as look at satellite maps. Way cool. I picked up another 300 acres doing just that this year. I was given access to a back 40 that edged a good open field - but wanted to not be stuck in one place. The birds did use the field well. Well off that 40 the last 3 yrs I have taken 4 birds. 3 myself and 1 for other a nephew with me. I now can move a bit more as I have better access. In my letters I state what I want to do. The dates I plan on being there. Who will be hunting with me if anybody. Note I only will take 1 and no more. I also state hunting is a priveldge and I write each year as permission is not a given. I give them a description of my truck with license plate, e-mail, and cell phone. I also tell them a bit about me, how old, my hobbies such as a hunter ed instructor, and why I seek written permission. Far easier to explain to somebody with written permission slip in your pocket! And I do give a few gifts if successful as I worked for a consumer product company. So a small bag of Zip loc bags and containers, some Glade, and some Off! and away I go. The gift seems to well received! And I thank each at the end of the season. I do send xmas cards. Just because a piece of land may be posted No Hunting does not stop me. I ask and have been quite successful! That as worked very well for me and a buddy in 2 states. Hope that helps. JW |
Ice fishing....been a good year here for that. Maybe ill turn a baitpuck into a double sider haha!
|
Teebug, that is sweet! How does it sound?
You are always welcome here in MA. I hunt Eastern NY or birds... Hillsdale, New Lebanon, etc.... right on Mass border. I've neve been too far in for turkeys. I do deer hunt Cayuga county every year though. |
Sounds great. The purrs and soft yelps are just amazing. I cant wait to use it this spring. Unfortunately i have a bunch of supplies and a few to make!

Welcome aboard njhunter!

JW, I'll have to start writing some letters myself then. Maryland is mostly private land (the eastern shore in particular, and that's where the big birds I grew up hunting all are, see signature picture), so knowing people or contacting them would really be the only way to go for getting access to areas. It's probably a little late to start asking for this season, but I'll definitely keep it in mind for next year.
|
It is never to late -
I will send you a sample of my letter via e-mail it does take time and I do follow up with some door knocking. I do find later season it is easier to get on private. But this program I use has worked very very well for me. I have lots of 40 and 80 acre areas that if I added them up would be over 2000 acres and I am not kidding. I treat each with respect and write each yr for that privilege. I have developed some very personable friendships because of it.And I owe it all to my mentor who made me go meet the public and ask. Hated doing it but then found I was very good at it. D |
Just an fyi, i am selling the calls hehe
|
How about a trade there T?

checkin in! im good to go. thanks for the chance. makes my already fun turkey hunt more crazy and fun haha.
|
so here is the deal with me and my turkey hunting time frame and periods where im at. there is 5 periods to put a lottery permit in for in my zone for spring turkey. I chose period E and period D. And i was awarded both permits. so i can only kill one TOM during each period. I didnt get a second or third permit for more turkeys so i can only get one tom each period, no hens. period E for my area is every saturday starting on: April 26, and May 3, 10 and 17th from sunrise until noon only. The last saturday on the 17th i can hunt sunrise to sunset. (these are the rules here where i live) And so period E for me is a 2 week period starting Monday, May 12–Friday, May 16 and
Monday, May 19–Friday, May 23, 2014. And during that time period i can hunt sunrise to sunset. So if i juggle my work schedule and all around the right way i can put some decent time in the woods. The three spots i have to hunt hold some nice quality turkeys. So hopefully i can bag a nice one and bring it to the team and help out best i can. I live in southern part of jersey near salem county, which is mostly farmlands, and swamps with oaks and dry land bordering. So ill be hunting easterns. Any questions or anything just let me know. thanks |
i read the rules for the most part i understand. i just wanna make sure im doing it right and not missing anything. in short basically if i shoot a bird i take the pics and measurements and all and post it on here and get points for the turkey and everyone in our team does same thing, most points in the end wins? correct?
|
Post it in the team score board for our team. At least thats how i understand it. Jw is captain and im co captain. So if you cant get ahold of jw get ahold of me. Welcome to the madness!
|
That about sums it up I believe. Shoot a bird, get us some pictures (I'm sure pictures with a ruler or scale would be preferred, but I don't know if they're necessary), then post in the Team 3 Score Report thread --> http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/2014...e-reports.html
There's a nifty little form for you to fill out about the bird and a link to the NWTF score calculator so you can get an actual score for your bird. |
