IOWABUCKHUNTR 09-13-2011 10:44 AM

I sent out a PM to our missing guy, if I dont hear back from him before September 24th I will ask for an alternate.

A little update from Iowa, the deer have really slowed their movement this week, it got up to 90 yesterday after a great week of high 60's and low 70's. We have a cold front moving in today and throught the rest of the week with a freeze warning tomorrow night more a touch of the Northern part of the state.

I've got 4 bucks I am keeping close tabs on this year, all will go above 140's with a 4.5 that would bust 160. I am hoping I can have the patience to not shoot the 160 and let him go 1 more year, I have been watching this buck since he was a fawn.

This will be the wife's second year in the woods with me, this year she will be putting the camera down and hopefully taking another big buck herself.

I check in everyday multiple times, so if anyone ever has any questions or needs advice; as long as it fits within my scope of knowledge I am more than willing to help! I can be reached at [email protected], if for some reason you need fast advice.

Happy hunting and good luck to Team 4!

BUCKMARK 09-13-2011 02:21 PM

If Iowa wants to be Captain that is fine and dandy with me, Hail to the Captain...Team RED MIST also sound good to be. The avatar shows team 3 on the arrow...Also sorry I have not been on in a few days, but we just moved into a new building at work and things have been real insane here...

That was just mine... I didnt realize HB put up a refined version... Which I am now proudly sporting until we officially decide on a name...

razor6570 09-13-2011 04:37 PM

Iowa as our team captain is fine with me.

As far as a team name, I am open to anything.

Temp has turned more fall like here. Deer are up moving heavily! I have been shooting about everyday. I shot out of my treestand the other night. Could not have been happier with the results! I am ready besides washing my clothes and packing my gear, oh wait,, I have another two weeks!!!!!

Good luck to all you guys.

halfbakedi420 09-19-2011 12:10 PM

so who has been/ will be in the woods this month in here....seen anything?

pjarrows 09-19-2011 01:52 PM

no hunting for me until Oct 15th

IOWABUCKHUNTR 09-19-2011 03:06 PM

No deer hunting for me until the 1st of October, but the bow has been part of the early season Tree Stand Pest Eradication Program, and the squirrels have been dropping like the acorn crop.

Next week opens Canada Geese season, so the ole Flu Flu's will be flying for sure! Ill get some video footage of the Bow/Geese hunts up hopefully next week for ya'll.

That sounds like a blast sending some Flu Flu's through the air! Good luck, that is something that I would like to try!

Oct 1st is my 1st day. I have been shooting every chance I get. Very comfortable out to 40yards, can shoot 50 very good but I will stay at 40. Never had to take a shot that far though. Most of the areas that I hunt is very thick, 30 yard shots are rare. In 17 years of archery hunting the longest kill I have is 32 yards! Most are 18 to 25 yards. I like those "chip" shots! I have missed my fair share of those "chip" shots though! But that is why I love it so much. The nice bucks I have taken will always be burnt in mind but those misses haunt me forever (the one that got away)!

sounds like a blast my days have been filled with work, lots of firewood (onl 17 cord to do in 3 weeks) and taxidermy not much time for anything else.

IOWABUCKHUNTR 09-21-2011 12:49 PM

9 more days... Can't wait to slam that first doe!

spidermonk 09-22-2011 06:14 AM

Went out on sunday in the rain. 5 bucks, 3 does, and 3 fawns/yearlings. Bucks were dinks. Had a doe at 36 yards but let her go for it was close to shooting time and did not want to mess with tracking and gutting in the dark and rain. Going out this weekend hopefully to arrow a doe.

BUCKMARK 09-22-2011 11:24 AM

Our season starts on October 1st. We are heading out this weekend to pull the card on the game cam and any last minute set ups...

razor6570 09-22-2011 02:08 PM

Finally got some good news today! I have been drawn to be able to hunt a army base that is near my house. It is an absolute awesome place to arrow a hog.
This will make the wait to the 1st day all the worse!

Thats awesome, congrats!

Just giving a quick update to bump our thread back to the top

Canada Goose season opens tomorrow morning, so I will be hitting the ponds with my trusty bow in hand ready to slay the first unlucky bird I see.

jemrami9 09-24-2011 08:11 PM

good luck....

AR Bowhunter 09-26-2011 05:37 PM

I am checking in tonight. Seems like the weather is going to work with us some what this weekend. Not bad for the first weekend 50's for lows an 70's for the highs. I spent the morning Saturday walking an checking cameras an glassing acorn trees an looking for acorns on the ground. Walked about 5 miles checking my favorite trees. Had some decent bucks on camera with a couple I would like to load on the ATV.
Good luck guys.

To each his own! I just take my bow out for every season that opens before bow... Squirrel, rabbit, dove, and now goose! 4 days to go!!!

BUCKMARK 09-28-2011 11:31 AM

We went to the property last weekend, not alot on the cam, so we moved it down where there is a lot of trails cutting through the tall grass along the edge of a corn feild. Corn is close to being ready to cut. Saw a ton of fresh tracks and sign down by the stand I will hunt on this coming Saturday...

AR Bowhunter 09-28-2011 04:27 PM

Well guys it is almost here. Got to take care of my one superstition tomorrow. Have to get the mounts on the wall wiped down an cleaned. If I have a superstition that is one.

IOWABUCKHUNTR 10-01-2011 05:50 PM

Well! Had a great opening morning here in Iowa... We weren't expecting to see too many deer in the terms of numbers with most of the crops still being in. However, we were pleasantly surprised when 6 does moved in on us in the late morning. On the other side of the farm, two other team members were busy with a slew of deer, one of them being a nice 10 pointer; at which an arrow was inconveniently thrown over his back.

We were able to throw down some awesome video, hopefully tomorrow mornings hunt will treat us just as good!

How was everybody else's opening day?

spidermonk 10-01-2011 06:10 PM

Went out this evening and saw 2 dink bucks and 3 does. Zipped one doe at 20 yds from my ground blind. The shot was a little high but managed to get a lung. She went 60 yds and dropped. Felt good to let an arrow fly.

razor6570 10-02-2011 11:58 AM

Congrats, Spidermonk

Well may 1st day turned out to be great with a bad ending. As I posted on here before, I was hunting in a army base.
I seen 9 bucks! Three were really good bucks. I had a real nice 8 point come in right at noon. I misjudged the distance and shot under him! He was an 8pt with an 18" spread. I was asd still am just sick with my self! I know that it happens to everyone but it doesn't make it any better.
Great day in the woods though. Hope the rest of you guys have better luck than me. I seen the deer but could not close the deal!

BUCKMARK 10-02-2011 03:48 PM

My first day out was nothing to write home about, only saw three deer, all small bucks, 1 offered me a picture perfect 20 yard standing still broadside shot, But seeing it was opening day, I decided to let him walk...

halfbakedi420 10-03-2011 07:02 AM

went out last night, the deer were out, but never made it to me before dark. it was hard to see the 100 yards away, so i don know if any were bucks or doe's, but just seeing them in the short time i was there is promising.

luckyshot 10-03-2011 12:49 PM

Hello all, just checking in. I was added to your team as a replacement I guess. I participated last season and tagged small but decent buck for the contest. I hope to better that deer this season. I'm from Massachusetts but I also hunt Maine and I'm headed to Kansas for a week this year. I hope to add to the team total.

pjarrows 10-04-2011 02:33 AM

welcome luckyshot when are you heading to KS, I am heading to north central KS in early Nov this year.

luckyshot 10-04-2011 07:22 AM

well Good luck I will be hunting about 60 miles north of you Oct 26 - Nov 9 in Kirwin

IOWABUCKHUNTR 10-06-2011 08:45 AM

Bump....

Update: I probably already said this, but had a great opening weekend here, saw 7 or 8 does all under 15 yards on Saturday. I have youth hunters out this weekend with us, so its a bit of a challenge for us guys taking them out. One youngin settled his pins on a nice 10pt, but shot right over his back, this would have been his first bow kill; so I bet his nerves got the better of him!

I will be getting back out in the stand this weekend (worked all week), this time with my brother in law, this is also his first year with a bow as well, so hopefully we can do some doe management and put a couple on the ground. We got decent video footage and put together a cheesy "traditional TV" hunting video, but wait until the next one comes out! It will be radically different from the traditional type stuff you see all the time...
