I was playing around with my hen call today. Called in...... 9 jakes and at the same time. I didn't see a long beard with them but, there could have been some never came out in the open.

Thats awesome. Did they gobble any at all?

Howler 03-21-2010 06:38 AM

That blended shot really seems to deliver some very impressive patterns. Maybe when I run out of the 3" #5 and #6 loads I have, I'll try some. BUT, since I haven't had to break out the shotgun in the last 3 years, it may be awhile before I need more shotgun shells.
Seems like early season, the jakes run in packs. Get one of them to come, and the whole herd follows.

Here in IL it's actually unlawful to use a turkey call from March 15 until opening day.... we can only use locator calls to shock gobble them but nothing to attract them.

Arrowmaster 03-21-2010 01:33 PM

Im down under 30 days before I'll be hunting Missouri. Im ready, gun ready, calls ready, decoys ready, truck ready and wife is ready for me to go... :)

car 03-21-2010 01:38 PM

Did they gobble. On yeah, they gobbled their heads off. Their heads turned bright red and they all started toward me. I was about 170 yards away when I first called to them. After they started my way I quit calling. After all I do hunt in my woods some. But I didn't see any long beards :(

As far as calling. You can call anytime you want.

4 weeks to go!

bigbucksPa13 03-23-2010 04:49 AM

Arrowmaster 03-23-2010 06:03 PM

Im so ready to hunt its bad. I was at one of my spots tonight and used the crow call just before roost and I had one respond.

Howler 03-24-2010 02:54 PM

You guys need some of this snow that we just got, ......it has a way of dampening the need to hunt turkeys... Another foot of the white stuff last night has my back sore enough that I'm just glad to be in the house relaxing for a few!
I think it was just two seasons ago that it snowed on us in KS. during the early archery turkey season. I really hope that doesn't happen again this year. That snow and cool temps. really has a way of shutting down the turkey activity.

Arrowmaster 03-24-2010 03:15 PM

Ouch Howler. Lets hope it melts real soon...

hatchet jack 03-25-2010 08:32 AM

Going up the mountains this weekend to do some scouting!!! I can't wait!!!!!

Howler 03-26-2010 10:34 AM

I called my dad for his birthday a couple evenings ago, he still lives back on the farm in KS., and he said I should've been back there already as there were 24 turkeys that walked by the house a couple days ago. Could've shot one from the front door.

Of course, the weatherman is calling for another 4" to 8" of snow tonight out here, so I'm still having a hard time getting cranked up to hunt'em yet.

IL-Cornfed 03-26-2010 05:03 PM

We don't have any snow but man we've been having some COLD weather! This morning when driving to work the temp was 23 with the windchill of 12 degrees! Man, the Youth season is next weekend.... I sure hope my kids don't have from sunrise until 1 PM in that crap!!!

Turkey Goddess 03-26-2010 06:43 PM

You're right IL - it's COLD!!! We had frost on the vehicles this morning - couldn't believe it! Hope the weather is better for youth season next weekend for your kiddos!!! :)

Hope they kill some Gobblers too!!!!

Still weeks away before IL season starts.

Turkey Goddess 03-31-2010 06:33 AM

I know IL!!! I was thinking the EXACT same thing!!!! DANG!!! I'm dieing here!!!!

LOL :) I'm gonna go back and look at everyone's posts and figure this thing out! haha

Kim

Turkey Goddess 03-31-2010 07:32 AM

OK!!! I went through all of our posts - some of us posted our season opener dates (THANKS!) and I googled the rest... LOL

This will help us COUNT DOWN the days til we have DEAD TURKS & POINTS ON THE BOARD!!!! Look these dates over - check for accuracy - I ain't promising nuthin! ;)

Some states have multi-zone state openers, so i listed both dates w/ (???) if you guys could let us know which one you're hunting. :)

1. Arrowmaster - MO: 4/18 & IN: 4/21
2. bigbuckspa13 - OH: 4/17 & PA: 5/1
3. IL-Cornfed - IL: 4/12
4. Grizzlyman - TX: 4/23
5. Down&OutHunting - IL: 4/5
6. Screamin Steel - PA: 5/1
7. car - OH: 4/19
8. Turkey Goddess - IN: 4/21
9. BOWHUNTINGisLIFE - KY: 4/17 & MI: 4/19
10. Howler - KS: 4/9 (Archery)
11. Hatchet Jack - PA: 5/1
12. Colbea - Ontario: 4/26

Again - I emphasize - Check for accuracy! LOL :)

It looks like Howler will be our first teammate in the field - April 1st (TOMORROW) in Kansas w/ a bow... GOOD LUCK HOWLER!!!! :)

A few of you have openers this weekend or Monday --- CAN'T WAIT TO SEE HOW U DO!

Kim :)

Howler 03-31-2010 07:48 AM

I only wish I were going to be back for the opener, BUT I won't be going back to hunt until 4-9,10, and 11th. Then have a 2nd trip planned for the 1st weekend of May and if I have to, I'll make one more trip after that....and what I mean by "have to" is if I don't fill both turkey tags on the first two trips.

Turkey Goddess 03-31-2010 12:26 PM

DANG! I was all excited Howler - thinking you'd be taking down a turk tomorrow!!! LOL Soon... though, right???

I don't know who's going out first then... Could be Grizzlyman depending on what zone he's hunting in Arkansas and Texas. Could also be Down&OutHunting or IL-Cornfed going out Monday....

I'm dieing to know who it's gonna be!!! LOL :) I still have 3 weeks to go --- grrrrr!!!

Kim

hatchet jack 03-31-2010 05:10 PM

IL-Cornfed 03-31-2010 06:25 PM

I'm in the North Zone here in IL so our season doesn't open until 4-12. Our season runs from 4-12 into the 2nd week in May

Arrowmaster 03-31-2010 07:21 PM

Love the posts Turkey Goddess. Im ready to hunt

car 04-01-2010 08:38 AM

I need to get some time in with my bow. Only have 18 days to go. My place doesn't look good right now. All I have is jakes. :(

I've been shooting mine daily! In fact, as addicted to bowhunting as I am... I'm actually shooting more than I ever have! I've got the Z7 tuned and tweaked and ready to rock!

GRIZZLYMAN 04-02-2010 04:48 AM

The Arkansas hunt in the zone that I hunt is 4/10-4/27. Unfortunately, the way my business schedule looks, I won't be hunting there this spring. I will be hunting a draw hunt in Texas (Matador WMA) on 4/23-4/26, and that will probably be the extent of my spring turkey season.

Turkey Goddess 04-02-2010 05:43 AM

Ok guys - I updated the list above - so I think it's right!!! :) Please feel free to continue updating as plans change... because we all know that happens!!!

Looks like our 1st hunter in the field will Down&OutHunting on Monday (April 5th)... Then Howler a week from today!!!

I'm living vicariously through you guys for the next 3 weeks - until I can get out there and HUNT!!!! :)

I can't wait!!!!! Good luck on Monday Hunt - can't wait to see how you do!!!!!!

Turkey Goddess 04-02-2010 05:47 AM

Hey guys!!!

Wanted to share this with you - had some trouble getting my shotgun patterned - but I think I've finally found my deadly combo!!! :)

This was at 25 yds with #5 Remington Nitro Turkey Loads, using Remington Turkey Choke Tube - Shooting my Remington 870 Express 20ga

Had 40 hits in 3" circle...

Gonna try shooting some Federal loads through it - just to see how it does - my gun didn't like the Winchester Supreme shot using my Charles Daly choke - but it may do better with my Rem choke... Gonna play with it some more today!!! :)

I have a ton of turkey targets - that's mostly what I've been using, but my husband wanted to see where my overall shot pattern was, so we used big poster boards yesterday... (FYI)

Hi Kiim

First, though, you must call them to 20 yards --->

Seriously, spend a few dollars and find some Hevi-13 #7 shot for that 20 gauge. Believe me when I say it is a completely different experience.

Tomorrow is the opening of the Tennessee statewide season for Peter and I. He was out of school today so I took him with me to listen. He heard 7, me 2. Thunderstorms predicted for early AM so I don't know how it is going to work out, but we're both excited to get this thing going.

Best of luck to you and your team and I hope you connect on your first bird this season.

MC

IL-Cornfed 04-02-2010 04:21 PM

Good shootin' TG !!! Knock 'em dead !!!

IL-Cornfed 04-02-2010 04:26 PM

At this point I find myself totally consumed with the addiction! LOL!

Today we went out to set up a couple of the blinds. As I pulled into the small pasture bordering the foodplot... there was a big mature Gobbler standing in front of one of the shooting houses! He must have a death wish ? LOL!

We even dragged out some of the decoys and wiped the dust off of 'em. They look sexy!

Arrowmaster 04-02-2010 06:35 PM

everyone be safe :)

car 04-02-2010 06:56 PM

Great pattern at 20 yards but, what about 40 yards or even 50 yards.

I've shot anywhere from 5 feet to 57 yards. On the 5 foot shot I almost missed that old bird. I aimed to the side of his head and only had 4 pellets hit him. that was way too close for me lol.
All kidding aside good shooting.

Turkey Goddess 04-03-2010 06:12 AM

Thanks guys!!! :)

My pattern at 40 yds is still ugly - gonna pick up some different shot today - thinking I'll try #7 Hevi (like mouthcaller suggested) and some Federal #6 (like arrowmaster suggested) and see if that works any better... I've done most of my patterning at 35 yds - not bad - but I want it to be better! :)

Of course this stupid rain has to stop before I'll get any shooting done... GRRR!!! Went out and roosted some birds last night - had a big boy struttin' for me!!! He was a beauty!!! Made my heart race like a Nascar! LOL

Went out this morning (at 5:30 am) to listen for gobbles, but was only out there for 20 minutes before the downpour started... UGH!!! I was bummin!!! :)

Can't get enough of seeing these guys!!! Once the rain stops (hopefully soon) I'm gonna go back out - they like to feed in the fields after a good rain and I'm gonna enjoy the show!!!! haha :)

Have a great day guys!!! Hopefully I'll have a pattern update for you later!

Kim
