Well, opening day of NY was good to me... shot this bird this AM. Flew down from roost and it was over in about 5 minutes.
He weighed in at 17lb 13oz, has 3/4" spurs, & an 8.5" beard. Certainly not the biggest bird, but he'll do!

Your score is 17.8125 + 7.5 + 7.5 + 17 = 49.8125

blackheel 05-01-2011 10:32 AM

Congrats on the kill!

IBHUN10 05-01-2011 10:51 AM

Good job WesternMA, nice bird!!

IBHUN10 05-01-2011 11:07 AM

SouthernStrut, sounds like you are a busy guy right now. I got a feeling you just might try to "sneak" a hunt in while getting moved to Georgia so if you do Good Luck man we need some more turkeys for the team!!

Arrowmaster 05-01-2011 07:24 PM

Awesome Western Congrats :)

This crappy season is finally over for me. I didn't get to hunt this weekend with all the clean up and everything going on up here in north alabama. I got a new job in West pt, GA, and we're moving this coming weekend. I'd like to try and hit the Georgia turkey woods before their season goes on out the 15th, but I see myself being pretty busy with other stuff for the next two or three weeks. Good luck to the rest of the team, and EFH I hope things are getting better down your way, and be careful in that mess.

SS the Raspy Blue call has been broken in and has a kill :party0005:

SS, you dang right about the mess. Hope it's getting better your way. Can't believe how much good this has brought out of people in and around our community! GOD bless you, be careful out there!

Western MA Hunter 05-03-2011 06:36 AM

Yeah man, I really am planning on checking out a place nearby over in Georgia to get in a hunt or two late next week. I can't find anything about out of state license prices though. I've fished through the website but I guess I'm just missing it. I need to know about a license and a good place to try out in Harris or Troup County. I know a guy who hunts down around the Realtree farm outside of Columbus, may give him a call when we get moved in next week. Any of you guys who know about hunting in West Georgia let me know something if you can.

Ethan, I just saw pictures of Tuscaloosa for the first time after the storms. Macfarland is flat out destroyed man. But you're right, we really have seen the best of people up this way in the past week. God bless you guys down that way too bud.

Nice birds guys. Way to go!

I will be out tomorrow & Sunday for sure.
Haven't hunted nearly as much as usual yet... but don't dismay... I will put another bird or 2 on the board for us!

Arrowmaster 05-06-2011 04:35 PM

Im tryin a new spot in the morning. Hope it produces. I did have a strutter in the field tonight, but he had girlfriends with him.

Western MA Hunter 05-07-2011 11:22 AM

Well... went out today with a buddy...had a nice tom fly down off the roost at about 60 yards... must have gobbled 100 times... worked him for over an hour and he wouldn't break... then he left w/ a hen... frustrating... thought we'd have a quick one this am... then we went to another spot and went for a hike... got 2 to answer... sounded like good birds... cut the distance and they were already on top of us.. set up, called one more time... they gobbled and I could hear them running in... 2 jakes... we figured we'd try for the double with the way the season has been going ... they came in to about 25 yards before my buddy could get a visual... then we did on 3 and shoot... mine dropped... he missed! :) Needless to say he wasn't too happy...
not a big bird... but we got dinner for tonight... will help total team score i guess...
14lbs even... 1/8" spurs... 3.5" beard. Heading back to NY tomorrow am...

Your score is 14 + 1.25 + 1.25 + 7 = 23.5

EFH 05-07-2011 05:37 PM

I hear ya Western MA, puttin some birds down now! To bad about the double but that's another for the team!! Good luck in the morning! I'll be headed back to Tuscaloosa in the morning, been in orange beach since Thursday tryin to relax, wish I was huntin.

blackheel 05-12-2011 07:41 AM

Better late than never. LONG POST! Just spent 3 days hunting and tagged a bird each day in my honey honey hole. These are all easterns.

May 9th - First gobble was at 5:20 am. Had birds to my west and north. This bird was taken at 7:07 am after hearing 300-500 gobbles between him, 8 jakes, and 3 other toms. They would gobble at me, each other, the hens that were calling. With the way my season had been going, I said the first longbeard that walks down my gun barrel gets it. This one came 23 yards off the end of the gun and got it. The 8 jakes came right in and walked all around him.

15.5 lbs + 12.125" beard + .875" spurs = 57.25

May 10 - Saw 2 birds go to roost across the street from my previous day's hunt. Wound up on the same group from the morning before. The woodline was to the north and I was facing it. Had 2 gobblers to my left, one in front, and one to the right. First gobble was at 5:19. Had maybe 50 gobbles between the 4 toms, with the 2 to the left providing the most talk. Carried on some great talk with the hens but could not coax them to me. Watched a hen pitch towards the gobbler to my far right but never saw them again. Then 2 hens pitched out about 90 yds to my right in a sand road. Eventually I could see the top of a fan and realized the birds in the woods had pitched down in the woods, gotten around me, and all came out in the road where the hens flew down. There were 3 strutters, the 8 jakes, and a mess of hens. They got past me and I realized I had to make a move. Made a huge hook move around them and got in front of them. Sat for a while and had a lone hen pass at 5 yds but no other birds. Realized these birds must have faded into the tall grass. Crawled to the sand road and no birds so I started another move when I saw the top of a fan sticking out of the tall grass. Now comes the wild part. I crawled on my hands and knees for 45 min to get past them where I could see a huge brush pile that I could use to close the distance. I would move when they were strutting rear end towards me and used the sun at my side too. Got around past them and was able to stand up and walk to the brush pile. Peeked through and they were 75 yds. Finally could see hens. They strutted there for 20 min and then all of the sudden they started strutting my way. Waited for the lead tom to put his head down in the thick grass and tucked the gun up in the brush. He walked into the gun, I pulled the trigger, and click! Dud shell!! He didn't hear it since the wind was from me to him and I was far enough behind the wood pile that he couldn't see me. He put his head down, I got the shell out (I shoot an Encore) and replaced, hammer ****ed and gun part way up when he jerks his head up. I thought game over but he broke into strut!!! YES! Broke out of strut, put his head in the thick grass and I positioned for the shot. When his head came up, game over at 23 yds!

20 lbs + 10.0625" beard + 1" & 1.125" spurs = 61.0625

May 11th - Went back after the same group. Birds were leery but at 46 yds I closed the deal close to where I took the bird the day before!

18 lbs + 10.25" beard + .8125 & .750" spurs = 54.125

IBHUN10 05-12-2011 08:57 AM

:happy0001:Congrats blackheel, good stories and nice birds!! Good job those birds will help the team out.

IBHUN10 05-12-2011 09:25 AM

blackheel 05-12-2011 09:37 AM

Don't know about dandbuck

Western MA Hunter 05-12-2011 10:58 AM

nice job Blackheel!!!!

Western MA Hunter 05-12-2011 11:26 AM

Worked 2 on the roost this AM w/ a buddy... gobbled good on roost.. made a few calls and they hammered us... then nothing... not another sound out of them.. must have had hens with them.
Taking my 6 year old daughter tomorrow... hopefully she will bring luck.. anything legal goes with her with me!
Did have some excitement at home today... lunch time I looked out and saw my German Shephard going nuts... face to face with a bear. Dog on one side of fence... bear on the other...
The bear wound up staying around for about an hour and a half and just wouldn't leave... i even hit it in the head w/ a rock.. it bluff charged me 3 times, but I just gave it right back to it... wasn't gonna let it win! ;)
I got to w/in 5 feet of it on the other side of the fence... I did have my .45 in case!
Not the best pics from my cell... but here it is...

SouthernStrut56 05-13-2011 04:32 AM

Congrats Blackheel, nice bird! Good pic Western, I'd have to change my drawers if I ran across that in the woods. I ran across some black bear turds about this time two years ago while I was fishing at my place. Never seen one though thank goodness. Anyways I'm done for good this season. I thought I'd try to sneak in a hunt over here in georgia, but we just got settled in and I forgot I got my buddy's wedding tomorrow back home. Good luck to the rest of you slayers this year! ...........By the way, is anybody else seeing these "13-year cicadas" that are out right now? They are bad down here on the Alabama Georgia line.

EFH 05-13-2011 05:03 PM

Blackheel, Awwwww Snaps! That's what I'm talkin about, gettin it done! Awsome birds man, congrats. Now I know how you felt when we were hunting! Haha, I want to go so bad.
Western MA, that's balls dude! Standing there that close.....man! I'm with SS on that one, I'd need to clean up! :D Great pic!!!
SS, man yea, these cicadas ain't no joke! You can hear them over the radio in the truck going down the road! They get down don't they!

Harputluyuzz 05-14-2011 02:17 AM

Thanks for share

blackheel 05-14-2011 01:03 PM

Is Arrowmaster submitting our scores or does he have another team member doing it? Just want the team to get credit for the birds I added this week.

Arrowmaster 05-14-2011 07:07 PM

I got them posted Blackheel. Sorry Ive been doing a lot of hunting. Congrats of 3 fine birds :)

blackheel 05-15-2011 03:25 AM

Thanks! How much longer can you hunt AM?

Arrowmaster 05-15-2011 06:49 AM

Ok here's my Indiana Bird. I shot this bird this morning. It was a gloomy morning, drizzling rain. I set up on a unplowed corn field. I knew the Tom was close cause I put him to bed last night. I had 2 hens out along with the B-Mobile. I didnt do much calling. I ended up having 2 hens come out of the woods 20 yards from the decoys. Less than 5 minutes later her he came and was ready to whip the B-Mobile. I shot him at 7 yards. I made sure he didnt get to the decoys. He was 20lbs, 7/8in spur, 1/8in spur and 11 1/8 beard.
Your score is 20 + 8.75 + 1.25 + 22.25 = 52.25

EFH 05-15-2011 09:03 AM

Great bird Arrow!! How much longer is your season, and can you take anymore?

Arrowmaster 05-15-2011 12:54 PM

My season is now over unless I can get out east to hunt, Id love to try PA or NY.

IBHUN10 05-17-2011 06:20 PM
