We just finished up our second three day hunt on public land. Nothing but jakes. Going back in the woods in about a week. Good luck to you guys, keep at em!

I hear ya Western MA, you ready to bust a head now! Haha!
Hey Ray, have you been hearing many gobble? LOL! Know the birds are not through like I thought! Guess there just not on my land right now. Talked to some friends this morn and they combined 6 good birds this weekend. All were in the afternoon, and all were with other gobblers! No hens around, still sounds late. |
Hey EFH, We have been hearing a few gobbles but not that many. Public land birds get worked pretty hard and that tends to make them somewhat quiet. I did get on a bird on my last day of my hunt but could not move on him due to another hunter in the same area. We have had alot of rain in the last week so many of the areas that we wanted to try are now under water. Will be back in the woods on Monday.... Congrats on all your birds. You are really cleaning up.

Keep at em RPD. Ive got 12 days and counting before I leave for Missouri. The 18th is the opener. I'll hunt for 3 days if need be. Come home work a day and if need be head back out for another 10 days coming back to hunt Indianas opener and a few days before heading out again to Missouri if I have killed by then. Dang that sounds confusing hahaha The turkey bug is biting bad. I can feel the rush coming. Dang I cant wait...
|
Good luck RPD63!! 12 more days here before the season starts. Haven't been seeing many turkeys around at all this year so I'm hoping things will get better by then, weather is suppose to get near 60 this weekend. Hoping the warmer weather will get the turkeys active!!!

Yea man! You know I've been in the woods! Been hunting through this mid season lull I guess. Actually heard my first gobble in over a week on my land today. The bad thing is, I couldnt tell I had a couple hundred yards to close to setup good on him and I was fired up, but the dang thing only gobbled twice and for the life of me I couldn't tell if he was left or right! Haha!!! Hopefully he won't be so tight lipped in the mornin. Man the bugs are tuff too, it was like 69deg. when I got out the truck at 5 this morning!

:happy0001:Nice bird Western MA, and good luck to you EFH!! Went out this morning for a drive and actually seen a few toms out strutting around so hopefully things keep getting better now that the weather has warmed a bit. Checked the trail cam yesterday and only one picture of a single hen on it so I moved it to another spot for a few days now. Hopefully this team will be busy next week posting a bunch of birds to put us in the #1 spot!!!:woot:
|
Just wanted to give an update. Hunted Sat all day and Monday AM and it's slow for me. Lots of shenanigans on private land opening day with idiots....Hopefully things will turn around.
|
Keep at em blackheel. I leave this Sunday for Missouri. I'll be ready to get on em for Missouris opener on the 18th. Seeing that I wont have access to a computer, I need someone to step up and score the birds while Im gone and post them in the scoring thread. Any volunteers. If I happen to kill one while Im in Missouri Turkey Goddess will post the pics for me and give the measurments. Good luck to all and be safe :) BTW I feel the rush coming :)

|
Ok almost packed and ready to head to Missouri on Sunday. Season starts there Monday for me. It looks good for opening morning Low of 53 and the high of 63 partly cloudy. :)
|
YEEEE HAAAA!! The ground is covered with SNOW again here today!!:bash: Not really what I was hoping for the day before season starts...
|
Ok guys Im off to Missouri. Everyone be safe and good luck. :)
|
Well I just got finished with a tough four day hunt on some public land. Got a big goose egg!!! This has been a tough year for the group of guys that I hunt with. Not one bird between the three of us. There is about a week and and a half of the season left but I do not think I will make it out. Good luck to all you guys.
Ray |
less than 1 week left here and counting... the toms seem to have disappeared behind dads for the time being... 5 jakes around though... Gonna at least get the kid some action on them this Sat with the youth hunt. The toms will show back up. I do have a few other tricks up my sleeve as well! ;)
I am going to try to take my first bird with the bow this year... so one of those jakes may be in trouble as well! |
Ok, went back out Sunday hoping for any signs that would let me know the birds are still going! We had a few tornados Friday and the riverbottom was flooded once again. With waders on I made my trek to high ground, gettin hard to come by! Had a hen pitch down about 40yds in front of me then mill off and that was it at daylight, complete silence! About 8:30 I spotted a hen and a STRUTTER in a field about 500yds away! I got in the woodline and circled to them, the water now is so deep my turkey vest is getting wet, but hey anything for a longbeard right!!! When I came back to the edge I had made it to within 80yds of the lovebirds. It was thick with briars but, after peeking through at them and calling softly for about 10min the hen got warm enough in the sun she let her feathers down and the girls walked off!!! DANG!!! Hahahahah!!!! oh well, I was proud of my stealthiness anyway. LOL!
|
Well we got 8in of fresh snow again here today needless to say the hunting hasn't been very good here with the winds, cold temps and now the snow. The turkeys seem to be all together yet in big groups and they don't respond to any calls. Weekend temps are looking better with the temps warming up so hopefully things start to shape up and the turkeys get their act together. Tried sneaking up on a decent TOM yesterday but to no avail, called for a while nothing sat there for 4hrs and the 2 hens come around but they didnt like the decoy and off they went!!
Hopefully things start getting better and I can connect with one soon..Next week if I dont have any luck probably try and get over to a different spot where brother-in-law connected with one. He wants to try to video some footage with his camera so we'll see how that turns out. Good Luck to all and hopefully this team starts filling up with some dandy turkeys!!! |
Oh yea almost forgot, received the sticker in the mail as well Arrowmaster.:happy0001:
|
Well Missouri wasnt a fun adventure. The toms were henned up and the weather wasnt helping. But I blew it on the first day. I misjudged my yardage and knocked him down only for him to get up and fly, then crash. I couldnt find him :( I'll be back out in Missouri in a few days to try it again.

Hey guys, been really busy lately and haven't been keepin up with you guys. How long do yalls seasons last? I know EFH and I will be done April 30 here in Alabama. I went last weekend Friday Saturday AND Sunday, and missed one at about 60 yds that I shouldn't have shot at. I was walking down the road towards the cabin and the fields, and saw a hen walking across the field towards a gobbling tom about 400 yds to the left. I couldn't walk down the road any further or I woulda been in the open and the hen would have busted me. So I dipped into a strip of woods to the left and crawled up behind the cabin and waited til she was out of sight. I started calling away from him to my right, which was a mistake, and then made my way up on the cabin porch to try and get a peek of the gobbler. He gobbled at me 3 or 4 times, and by the time I got up on the porch to peek around and see him, he was already about 150 yds away coming across the field strutting. He didn't pay a bit of attention to the hen, just passed her by and came towards the calling. He was moving a lot faster than I first thought, so I kinda got trapped and couldn't circle back to set up. I hunkered down beside an old recliner and hoped he'd come close enough, but he took the farthest path around a low wet spot in the field about 70 yards out. The hen was following him so I really didn't want to let them go and him get henned up all morning, but I should have. I took a shot from the porch at least 60 yards out and missed him. If I would have let them go past maybe I could have set up on him later on, but I couldn't hold my finger back guys haha. Bad bad season down here, but some good news, I got the new job I interviewed for and will be moving back home about 45 minutes from my land! I'm hanging with wifey and her family for Easter this weekend, but I'll be back out on the 29th and 30th to end this crappy season, hopefully on a good note. Good luck to the rest of you guys, maybe we can make a big comeback!
|
Happens to all of us Arrow & Southern! sucks though... we start monday and run for 4 weeks. NY starts Wed and runs about the same length... getting very inpatient!
Can't wait for the youth hunt Sat. The the boy I'm taking at the range yesterday... he's a good shooter... he's 14 and handling the 12 guage 870 w/ 3.5" # 5s like a pro! Any bird that gets in his way is in trouble! |
Arrow, sounds amassingly like my opener! LOL!! Good luck, and thanks for the sticker!
SS, that's tuff bud! At least you know you've got a Tom to hunt in there the last couple of days! Get in there and smoke em!!!! To all of you with season left to hunt, good luck! I'm pullin for you, and can't wait to hear about your time in the ole turkey woods and see some limb hangers draped over your shoulders! |
NC goes to May 7th. I'll be in NJ May 9-11...
|
:happy0001:Well guys I connected with one this morning!! Not the biggest bird I have ever shot but a turkey for the team!!! Started out this morning getting up a little late after shutting off the alarm it was like 6:20a.m. when I woke up and was "darn it" I got to get a move on it. So I rush and get ready head out to the truck and I'm on my way.
I thought I would check out a spot that I hunted last night after seeing a real nice one on the neighbors field but that didn't pan out. So I stop by there this morning give a few calls nothing so I figure I'm going to the area I have been hunting regularly and there he is out strutting in the field. I thought should be able to call him in if he's by himself but then I see the hen he's with and they were going over the hill in the field. So I drive to the other side of field get out and stay on back side of the hill to the turkeys, while walking across the field keeping my eyes peel'd watching for the birds I sneak to the woodline and set up. After about 20 min he answered with a "gobble" then the hen started. A little later I called softly and I heard the hen again and "wham" here they come behind me. I think the tom had seen me move and let out a couple pucks and started to walk the other way, I'm like "no" so I hurry call again softly and had the hens attention she walked over to the decoy and here he come following her when she got close she started pucking and must have seen me raising the gun and started to leave so I hurry and get the gun up he was 40 yrds out and let him have it. Anyways one for the team!! Eastern-17.5lbs., 7in. beard and both spurs were 3/4in.:cool2: Here's the monster & my nephew with me Your score is 17.3125 + 7.5 + 7.5 + 14 = 46.3125 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I hear ya IBHUN10! Way to smack one in the snow bud! Congrats man, be proud of any bird you get. Keep on bustin heads man!
|
IBHUN10, awwww yea!!!!!!! Way to go man! Good lookin bird and great story. Looks like all that snow you were worried about didnt stop ya! :D
|
thanks!! SouthernStrut and EFH, I forgot to add that I shot him at 7:45 a.m. and the hunt lasted about 45min. from the time I had "set-up" to the time the Winchester Supreme #5's let out a "BOOOM" from the Mossberg. When I cleaned him out it appears that he had been shot before cause we found a bb of lead shot in him like the size of buckshot. When I seen him walking in I had thought he seemed to have a limp of some sort. Now! this is when the :poke: starts my bro-in-law, j76 who's on Team 10, has to find a way as why I got the turkey...He's tellin me that I shot a crippled up turkey and its no wonder that I got him cause anybody can sneak up on a crippled animal and shoot it!!. Oh well its all fun and games...:D I think he just can't take the "heat" that I shot a better turkey than he did!!!:barmy::happy0001:
|
Haha! IBHUN10, tell your bro-in-law a wounded animal is twice as alert in the woods, and it took some mad skills to get on that bird! :D

All :poke: aside, am very glad he got it done, congrats! Plus it leaves the door open for team 10 to hit his and my honey hole next weekend and open the gap up a bit more!!:action-smiley-099: P.S. That little guy in your pic looks like a future turkey slayer to me!!! Must get it from his dad!!!! |
