Well, I called for on of my dads buddies this morning on our farm. The birds were gobblin' their heads off this morning......................until they got off the roost[&:]. They didn't make a sound once they hit the ground, I figure they found some hens right away. We were set up about 80 yrds from the roost and I think they flew down the opposite way of us. Pretty drizzly and cool this morning.

Yesterday my uncle shot a tom sporting a 10" beard and topped the scales at 20#. He was toward the back of our property, and said the birds were gobblin' like crazy, and that he saw 3 more big toms, and 2 jakes in the little area. Looks promising. My season starts next sat:)

Man these @#$%&())(*&^%$#@!#^^&& turkeys are giving me fits. They will not come to any kind of calling. I set up between 2 birds gobbling well before daylight this morning. I was in the corner of a field almost between the 2 birds with my dekes out in front. They gobbled pretty hard on the roost, then flew down and gobbled some more. But would not budge from the area they flew down to. I know one of them had to be able to see my dekes. Eventually they just walked off and shut up. I heard 2 more gobbles the rest of the day.

I did have a good day mushroom hunting tho.:)

Who on this team is still chasing turkeys with the bow? I have 2 tags to fill yet.[:@] I got till the 11th on one and the 15th on the other. Those dang turkeys better come to call pretty soon. Either that or I gotta find a suicidal one to stroll in front of the blind.

I've got two still left to fill.

I've got until the 31st to get the job done though, so we'll see.

Well guys, I think the turkeys win this bow battle. I gave it a good try but these birds are too darn tuff to kill with a bow. I have not had one bird come to calling off the roost. I even had my buddy who hunts this area come help me out this weekend. He says everybody is saying the same thing. Too many hens and a late spring, the gobblers are not responding.

I will be taking my shotgun next weekend to try and fill one of my tags. Altho I really could have only shot at one with the gun so far.The other tag runs out on Wednesday and I won't be hunting any more before then. I gotta get me some meat for the table.

RE: the Great team 8 thread

It doesn't do us any good in this contest, but I finally got one(with a shotgun[&:])The birds in my area are not bowhunting turkeys.:D

I finally got a bird to come within range. This has been the tuffest year turkey hunting I and a lot of guys I know have had. I roosted a couple of birds last night. I heard the most gobbling ever with birds going to roost. They didn't quit till 8:45. So I was pumped for the morning. The closest one I roosted started gobbling at 5:20. He gobbled pretty good on the roost and then flew down the hill (I was on top of the hill, where he likes to strut). I called him back up, but he was one ridge over from me and would not budge. He would gobble every once in a while and then moved off.

I then went after 2 others that were gobbling down the ridge. By the time I got there they had moved off to the neighbors field. I could see them strutting in the field with 2 hens, one hen had a beard too. I watched them until they moved off into the woods.

I then went back up to get my dekes and move to another area. I figured I would give one more call to see if anything was in the area. Before I was was done the birds cut me off, and they were CLOSE, just over the rise of the hill. I sat down next to the closest tree, which was about half as wide as me.:)In a couple of seconds three jakes came running over the hill. With the weather supposed to be nasty tomorrow and that being my last day I figured I might as well end it. At 25 yards the lead jake went down in a heap and never even flopped.

He scores 31.625.

Well I got good news and bad news.

Good news is that I killed one, bad news (atleast for the team) is that it fell to the bang-stik. [&:]

http://www.huntingnet.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=2677261&mpage=11

Would have killed it with the bow but my release loop broke this mornin' and I didn't have time to fix it. The bow was just not shooting well after that and I wasn't very confident with it.

I knew the birds where there and I wanted to get on em'. Plus they are calling for rain the next couple days so I fiqured I better just grab the gun and do it.

Hope all you guys are lucky enought to score with the bow. I would have loved to.
