Saw two barred owls, a sharp-shinned hawk miss a squirrel, and had a small spike sniffing the bottom rung on my ladder stand at last light. Good day. Built a blind on the inside corner of a fence next to a gate opening where the deer enter my yard to eat my chestnuts. I'm hoping to slip in there after work tomorrow and arrow one of the does that come down each evening.

I took the friend with cancer up to hunt S. Dakota this weekend. I placed him in a stand and started off towards mine. I wasn't paying that much attention. I threw my pack on and started down the trail. I did get ten feet and a toad of a buck jumped up from the brush in front of me. The bastard was laying there watching me get my friend situated...argh!
On Saturday and once in my stand, I had 14 does and five poult walk past. On Sunday, I had ten does...I'm still waiting for a shooter buck. I'll be back up there this coming weekend for more of the same.

Good for you Huck.
I had the perfect plan and setup just poor execution. Right under the does belly. It was on the edge of my effective range (apparently past it LOL). Standing broadside. It was fun though.

Best of luck with the doe Tony. I hope you find her!
Too bad Chuck, that's a dot you'll add to your collection. Ten bucks says you'll get her next time!
I'm having a S. Dakota doe tag mailed (as of yesterday). I didn't want to waste my "any deer" tag on a doe. Having the extraantlerless tag (meat) will at least make up for the long drive from Colorado to South Dakota. With the price of gas, coming home empty handed is a tough pill to swallow.
Let's keep after it! All the best!

It was no big loss on my part. It was a pure meat hunt. I have 30 acres and fruit and nut trees in my yard. The deer feed in my yard all the time and it's nothing to be practicing with my bow and have does feeding 35 - 40 yards away. So I set up a blind next to the gate opening they frequently use in the back corner of my yard. I work until 5:30 and don't get home until after 6:00 so that setup is about all I can do. So I try for the does on weeknights and bucks on the weekend. I hadn't been in the blind 15 minutes when they exited the woods 100 yards away and headed for the fence. Eventual 6 does came out into the field and headed downhill. The first doe jumped the fence below a small rise where I couldn't see her until she was halfway in my yard. I couldn't see the rest of the herd because of growth on the fence and being screened by my blind. I was wondering if they would all cross at the same area and be beyond my range. I checked the wind with my puff bottle, it was predominantly in my favor but had switched a couple times earlier, I was good. I looked to my left and a mature doe was staring my way. I handn't been moving too much, just my one hand squeezing the bottle. But it was enough for her to wonder what she saw. I was well covered and had on a ghillie suit so I doubt she could identify me. What followed was 6-15 minutes of maybe/maybe not ending with the deer deciding to leave. It was difficult because I had to keep an eye on them and make sure the doe in the yard didn't bust me if a shot presented itself. They were close, maybe 8 yards, but facing me and I'd have to move from behind my blind to get a shot so I sat still. When they left the doe in the yard got nervous and headed out as well. She got to a fence crossing in front of me, and just out of range, and was staring out into the field trying to determine the danger. I took my shot but was short. Good windage though. They made several attempts to return but would chicken out at the last minute and headed back into the woods. I'm trying to think of a different spot to set up for tonight.
