HELLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOO.... Seems to be a vacuous echo in here. No thrilling encounters over the weekend?

One of the bears I was looking over for Saturday's opener got hit by a truck on Friday night. Totaled the truck but no signs of the bear or any blood. I hope they didn't scratch my rug!

Hey guys sorry about the lapse, been busy at work and with family stuff but have gotten out some and have also just acquired a new farm over the weekend...

Saw some deer on saturday including a nice 8 that would probably go 105 ish and a lot of deer moving after hours... Last night I was fortunate enough to stick this girl...

I've been studying my a$$ off for a test I have to take to advance my career. Not fun at all. Last weekend I had a spike visit me a few times and decide to show off both sides at 20 yds for about 15 minutes. Too bad he wasn't his dad. There's a huge 8 running around where I was hunting and my brother saw him but out of range. Lots of yearlings running around there too. The guythat owns the land has been doing a great deal over the past 6-7 yrs for ducks and deer and it's really starting to show. Next year I think will be a good one there.

Tomorrow is my test so no hunting for me. Next Friday I'm off for 10 days of archery in Wisconsin. Should be a good time.

Sorry guys I have not been around much over the last week. Work has been crazy hectic and my home life hasn't been too relaxing either. I have not gotten out at all this week but I hope to get out tomorrow morning before the rain hits.

Bear season starts tomorrow but I'm still not sure whether to try and furnish the house with a new rug or put in the effort to get off of the road system where I can hunt deer. Every rifle toting yahoo in town will be chasing after bruins (no separate bow/rifle seasons for brown bear) . The bigger dilemma is that goat season starts next weekend and any bear hunting will just be chance encounters after that so this weekend is my only time to really focus on full days of stalking bears (I can get out evenings after work for a couple hours next week to chase the 9 footer I've seen). Sucks to be me doesn't it?[8D]:D:D

Nice doe there Adam.

Now somebody PLEASE put the smack on some bone!!!!

Got a call from a friend of mine last night. This is a guy who's shot a 30 7/16" B&C bear that's probably #5 or 6 all time. Now he wants to get one with his bow. So anyway, last night he cut tracks on a bear as big or bigger. We went in this morning and not only cut tracks on this one but another just a bit smaller but still world record contender and then we cut tracks on Bearzilla! I mean this thing made us both stall out when we hit them! These things were bigger than your head! And all of these tracks are inmy friend'sfrom the evening before. Three huge brown bears working the same drainage with at least one potential world record and here we are makingour way into their dining room and bedroom in the dark with nothing but stick and string and his .454 revolver. One of us may pack a cannon in tomorrow to cover the other as we do some predator calling in the heavy cover. Nothing like ringing the dinner bell for 1500 lbs. of hungry bear and sitting there to see who shows up.

Thats crazy! (said in a good way ofcourse). Seriously, my hat goes off to you. I wouldn't have the skills or determination to pull that off.

On another note, I did not get out on Saturday because of the rain. However, my neighbor and his dad went out Friday and saw more deer in one morning than we have so far all of this season! Lots of bucks chasing does and sign. I took a brief walk on Sunday morning and found plenty of sign as well, just not where I was hunting.

Tomorrow is my birthday gentleman and I am taking a personal day to do what I love doing the most...bowhunting.

Wish me luck. ;)

Best of luck!!!!!

I had kindof an interesting experience last night - shared via cell phone - my brother in law and good hunting buddy Andy took a Booner with his bow in Indiana! Was one of the coolest experiences, I just wish I could have been there! The coolest thing was I got him into hunting at 33 years old about 6 years ago. I will post pics when I get them....I have cell phone pics and that buck is unbelievable! LONG TINES, HUGE frame, just all around AWESOME!

KodiakArcher 10-27-2008 10:53 AM

RE: Official Team 2 Thread

Nice! I'm just hoping to see another Booner this year.

We went in on fresh tracks of a 9 footer that was working up a small creek yesterday. We ran headlong into a sow that was coming down the creek as we were going up. Which was good practice for keeping cool enough for a shot. Shortly after that our boar's tracks cut up out of the creek and went downwind so we moved off of him and on our way out ran into REALLY fresh tracks from Ol' Mo! We knew he was headed to bed so we got on them and followed them for a bit into the heavy alders (These tracks are like following someone on snowshoes, they're HUGE!) We got in and found a couple beds then we had a little pow-wow to discuss the swirling wind and that Mo might be just 20 yards ahead of us bedded down and that we should back out and set up on a couple exit routes in the afternoon to catch him when he got up. Right about then all Hell breaks loose; HOOOOOFFFF!!! GRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! Crash! Snap! Crash! and he's gone. He was bedded just 40 yards from where we were and only 30 yards from where I was standing in his last bed. The wind had swirled around and hosed us. It was pretty amazing how fast my friend's rifle went from cross slung on his back with bow in hand to rifle on the shoulder with round chambered! :D:D:D We backed out and left him to settle down. I'll be back in there after work today. If I get a shot at the 9 footer it's going to be hard to pass up since I've got some empty floor space for a rug but I'd really like to get a shot at Ol' Mo. I'm pretty certain he's a world record bear and that rug would be more like wall-to-wall carpet!

Awesome Kodiak, Thats my dream hunt!I'd have to cut my teeth on a few "little" Blackies first. My wife is against it of course due to something possibly hunting me back..lol

I saw 2 bucks last evening..a 6 and a 9 point. I estimated them at 2.5 year olds. The 9 point has great potential if he can make another season. I watched them butt heads and tickle antlers..no real fighting just a casual warm-up.
Neither one were shooters at this point. Although all the 9 lacked was mass. Then a doe came out below me at last light. Clearly in range but it was just dark enough I couldn't make out all the twigs and branches, so disgreesion being the better part of valor I simply enjoyed watching her. I think I gave her enough time to feed away before I made my descent.

I hung a new set on a private farm yesterday afternoon, may hunt it tonight. These friggin 20-30mph winds with gusts to 40+ are making this week difficult to say the least! Add in, occasional driving rain and sleet and it's a nightmare!

I did get a Turkey Saturday.

It's been the toughest early season I can recall..no signs of chasing or even intrest in does yet, in my area of NE Ohio.

Sounds like things are definitely picking up for all of us. Sadly, I didn't not make it out to hunt yesterday despite having the day off. It rained, snowed and was windier than I have ever seen it before for the entire day. I am going out after work today and I have been seeing some very nice bucks chasing already.

I am crossing my fingers. ;)

Yeah, I know myself and at leaast 8 others of us that wish it was your tag too!

Got a date tonight so I just had time to run in and hang a stand for the prevailing westerlies that are supposed to kick in tomorrow. Not real encouraged by the fresh sign that was there (small sows) but you never know when ol' Mo is going to get pushed by soemone else or just plain going to screw up. When he does, I plan to be there. The best fresh sign is the tracks with a bear standing in them!

Anybody else pumped up about tomorrow? I work the typical M-F daytime hours and though I do get out in the afternoons occasionally I really prefer morning hunting. Saturdays are it for me in PA so I make the most of it. I went out this past Wednesday and basically used the hunt as a scouting session for tomorrow morning. I found a very nice area where it appears deer activity is very high. The only problem is it is on a steep hillside that I am actually going to have to climb up, then over and then down in order to get to.

Lets just say I will be taking it slow and easy...;)

I hunted my Butt of all week. The late week things started picking up yesterday had a sub 100" 7 point and a 3 point (broken side) square off. They were under me at about 7 yards. The 3 point blew and ran back a few steps and then chased the 7 point outta site.

The bucks are getting edgy but the does are avoiding them like the plague.

I saw 2 whoppers on the drive to hunting this morning in the headlights.

I'm outta the woods till Sunday, due to Family obligation Saturday(and trick or treat tonight)

I saw 5 bucks on Saturday, 3 of which were shooters and one was pretty nice. Got fogged out while working on 9 goats with a decent billy in the group. They vanished in the fog and I never found them again. The wind blew too much to be in the high peaks on Sunday so I got back in my bear stand. Had another perfect quartering away 20 yard shot on a bear in the morning but I let it walk. Hare hunters and their dogs messed up the evening hunt but I did whack a nice cross fox on the drive home. It ran off the road and watched me get out, cross the road into the ditch and draw back on him. That's the last he ever watched... I think I'm getting this one mounted. Here's where the latest pics are at:

Thats a freaky looking fox!

KodiakArcher 11-03-2008 10:31 AM

RE: Official Team 2 Thread

A cross fox is half red / half silver color phase. You should see a big silver, they're real freaky with those yellow eyes looking out through all that grey and black fur. If I get one of those this year it'll be a trifecta for the season. Right now I'm just planning on getting the cross mounted but if I score a silver (fairly rare) I'll get something done with all three in one mount. This cross is as big or bigger than most coyotes. I think I'll send him to a taxidermist down south just to freak them out.:D

Well in the past week I've now seen 15 different bucks. Tonight I had a bonifide shooter at 15 yards. A good ten minutes after legal shooting time. I was on a field edge and with the clear skies could easily see my sights and the clear shot to his vitals. The problem was I had looked at my watch and knew it was past legal time! {sometimes morals get in the way of common sense[8D]} SoI simply watched him, knowing I coulda made that shot!

With time change I had 2 hours to hunt.. saw 9 deer ~ 2 bucks (1 was a spike) and this other buck that was a 10pt minimum with extra junk! Not a real monster but certainly a shooter.

Both bucks were chasing does and grunting up a storm!

:D:D:D Now that you mention it, with hunting season in full swing, house chores have gone by the wayside...

I hope to get the DXT dialed in with broadheads at lunch today. If that happens I'll probably take tomorrow off. We got an inch of perfect, fresh tracking snow last night.

BOB,
Thanks for the congrats on our team thread. CJ was a little tick off that i didn't get him out of school to track /recover the buck. He shot his first squirrel on Sat the 1st of november. I think that made up for him not being there on the recovery. Thanks again with being patient with CJ at the GTG!!!!!

Congrats on doing the right thing with that buck after shooting light was over. i bet you will be rewarded for doing the right thing sooner or later!!!!!!!!!!!!

How else has your season been going?
