RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
Just checked the weather. A big cold front is moving through my way, highs in the low to mid 50s starting wednesday. Looks like I won't be waiting out because of the hot weather afterall. Ill be hitting the stand Wednesday night!!!:D
I am focusing on hunting thick hardwoods with my climber. Alot of trees were recently cut down and logged out which opened it up to alot of sunlight and man is it thick in there with vegetation!! It is about 200 yards long with a swamp in a nice gully on one side and a cornfield on the complete opposite. This is only my third year hunting and even though I have had great success with two back to back opening night harvests I still lack experience in stand placement. I use to live on this piece of property and growing up riding my dirtbike and three wheelers at night I have seen many monster bucks that I would have never imagined roamed these woods. The problem is I have yet to see a nice mature buck while on the stand. Yellow-cornfields Red outline- Hardwoods Blue- swamp Light green- possible spots I want to hang the climber Darkish green- soybean (I have seen monsters in this field, but it was years ago since they have grown soybean. Since it has been corn every year, But not this year:D I cannot hunt this field but everything around it. Just lookin for some input, thanks (Heres my first buck I shot last season, opening night.) ![]() ![]() |
RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
I marked the spot I'd hit in the evening, but without seeing the property, this is just my best guess.

RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
Monie, thanks for the input. Funny thing is the top left dot you marked is exactly where I shot my 6 point!! It's a nice low bottom right in there and I have a two man buddy stand in it.. Even more funny is your second dot in the center is just a tad west of where I shot my first doe:D I'm throwing up my summit near my other green dot and your dot by the corn tonight.

Not as good of a look as I would have liked. ;)He had a huge body, but I didn't get a a good look at the antlers.Between the low light and my eyesight, Icouldn't tell exactly what he had.I did get him to stop with a snort wheeze. I grunted a couple of times, but he really wasn't interested. He was more worried about getting to where he was headed...the green beans! Which, of course, is on private land. [&:]
I'm hoping to fill my freezer soon! Would you care if I got us 95 points?? lol |
RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
haha 95 points, I'd take 10 at this point in time. "shoot what your proud of" I can assure you, I will!!! Good Luck.

RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
I haven't seen a spike yet, which would getus close to 10 inches. lol
It's early. I'm just now starting to see fresh rubs and scrapes, but very few of them. The deer are starting to get spooky. I hunt public land, so everyone else out there taking a whack doesn't help...that and the fact that some of them don't bathe or wash their clothing. [:'(]I came upon one guy tracking and even I could smell him. Way to scare the deer, dude. [X(] It doesn't help that a lot of those guys get into their stand late. My buddy and I are there at least a couple of hours early, just so we can let things settle. We hear guys tromping in, talking like they're just going for a walk, clanging...ugh. I SO need to find a lease. Ok, I'm through whinning and crying, now. lol Keep your fingers crossed for that 10 incher!! lol |

RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
Can someone please explain this to me??? How can someone who shoots his bow all year long andwins various tournaments, miss a deer at 35yrds??? And not just any deer..this was the type of buck that I've spent the past 7 years looking for! Year after year I'd sit in a tree and pass up little buck after little buck in hopes of one day having a monster walk past. In fact in the past7 years I've leta combined 80+ bucks walkpast. Yes I have seen some very nice bucks in that time, but none haveever been in range and I was left to only watch and observe these amazing animals.Well this past sunday it finally happened! I had a gorgous 3 1/2 yr old nine point come sauntering in and for a whole 40 seconds I was able to bask in his presence. This deer was absolutly amazing! Its so cool to see deer as they age...they become a whole different animal compared totheir younger counter parts. He was big and muscular(all of200lbs)and was a very dark color unlike the usual light brown of a younger age class deer. He wore an awsome set of antlers. 5 long tines on his left side and 4 on this right. His spread was almost 20 inches as his main beams streched well past his ears. You may say how do you remember so much about him from such limited time to look him over..well let me tell ya, when you finally get a buck like that in your sights he gets burned into your memory forever! So now for the part that is haunting me.... So their I am standing in my tree stand...taking care of "business" yep..sitting there taking a pee when this brute comes walking down the trail! Seven years of waiting and I get caught with my pants down..so to speak!!So I'm standing there with my $$% in my hands trying to finish before this buck walks outa my life forever. Not only was I holding the wrong "weapon" LOL but my bow was still on it's hanger and off to my side and this slammer buck is closing the distance quickly. So after finishing quicker than a chick at a bar, I got everything put away and grabed my bow. By now he was already thru my first shooting lane and heading fast towards my second and last chance shooting lane. As he entered my final lane I began to draw the bow and just as I did he stopped with a tree shielding his vitals. Now I was stuck there at full draw holding while this buck just stands there and looks around. After what seem like forever(probably 15 sec) he started to move again thru my lane...now with his vitals wide open I bleated at him to get him to stop. As he came to a stop I quickly centered my pin rt behind his shoulder and began to pull thru the shot. At this point all I was thinking was " wow!! this is finally gona happen!!!" Well It didnt! Cause as I was sighting in on him I failed to relize that he was closer than I thought and at the shot I watched in horror as the arrow flew harmlessly rt over his back! As I sat there in utter bewilderment and watching a deer that I had waited so long for just turn tail and bound away I almost lost it! Thats rt....I litterly wanted to cry( yeah real manly hun??!!)I didnt thou I might add ;). So thats my disapointing story from this weekend. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what the rest of this season has in store!

RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
OMG!!! I feel for you APA. I bet you were literally aching inside afterwards (I would have cried and barfed if that makes you feel any better). I bet you will get another chance, just hang in there - and keep your pants up.Some things just can't be explained, as we all know, you are more than qualified to make great shots.
I had a similar incident a couple of years ago. I was focused on a deer that passed my 30 yd tree mark and I kept my draw on him until he stopped. He was about 13 yards closer butthe densematter in mybrain kept me locked on the 30 yd pin. You know the rest of the story. This is how we learn, it just takes me a bit longer than others. I was just talking to a friend of mine a few days ago that it seems there are more over-shots than under-shots. Wonder what the stats are for that. I'll be doing a Saturday evening and Sunday morning hunt at my buddy's place this weekend. Keeping my fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone else. |
RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
By the way Monie, and the rest of the team, we could all score 75 point bucks and win this thing....:D, so 95 points would be a bonus.
|
RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
KCMO....lol too funny!
APA...man, that's tough. Next time, just let your hmm hmm get some air while you whack the brute!! ;) Last year a guy that comes in to the shop I frequent, said he shot his buck while he hadhis pants down and was in the middle of doing his business! With any luck, you'll see him again.Do you have trail cams set up? If he moves, you may be able to locate him. I have sunday off again, and wednesday. Hopefully *crossing fingers* I'll get something. Watch, I'll come out of the woods with a stinkin' cold. |
RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
hey guys sorryi havent posted in while been away from the computer for a while. went huntin sat. got in the stand a little late because of family issues friday night. saw a decent 4 pt while going in then before i could get completely set up had about 7 or 8 does go by. then that evening saw nothing out of the stand and as i was going out saw 3 bucks 2 4pts and a very nice shooter not for sure how many points but saw at least 3 tall tines on his right main beam. then went to pick my uncle up from his stand and ran a nice buck toward him about 40 yds. he shot over its back he said it was probably the big 8 we have on camera. so i told him i had dibs on that stand next sat. since him and my dad both had opportunities out of the same stand.

Now that it's cooled off, I hope to see more deer. *crossing fingers* lol
I was told there really haven't been many deer checked in. My buddy and I have been chosen for a refuge hunt and a military hunt. Hopefully, I'll be able to bag a couple of nice bucks. Next week is the refuge hunt. We only have 2 days. He was chosen for the 1st and I was chosen for the 3rd. |

RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
The Cityboy scores!! This morning started out great for me. There was a heavy frost on the ground and the air was still. I started seeing some deer during that period between first light and sunrise. Three does came out through an opening but didn't hang around long. As they were leaving a small buck came out and was within 12 yards. He wasn't chasing the does, just out for a bite. Figured I would just watch him. The temp started to warm and the frost began to melt. Over the next hour and a half I saw another 10 does, most in pairs and all out of range, but still fun to watch and see where they were coming from and going to. Then a fawn came wondering by all alone, just trotting by. I decided I would leave my treestandat 10:30 and that would get me home by noon. A few more deer cross my opening out of range. At 10:30 I started packing up all my gear. Everything was ready to go, I just needed to unscrew my quiver hanger. As I turned to take it down I see this guy come out into the open. He came out in a gentle walk and I watched just long enough to decide this guy is ready for my action. I turned by back to him and pulled my arrow from the quiver and nocked it up, then made the big turn. Some things you can't explain, but the guy didn't see me. That's all I needed. I estimated he was at 35 yards, and was walking away but still broadside. It was so fast I didn't have time to start shaking (yep, thatbuck fever always gets me).I wasn't a good shotbut he left amassive blood trail. I went into town for a quick lunch and then back out. This treestand is over a mile from the car so I got my workout today. I'll let you know what it scored sometime tomorrow. I hope it's over 50!

Hot damn, we're on the board!!
Good shootin' there Tex!! ![]() I let a little buck pass yesterday, he might have scored 15...lol. He was on the trail of a doe. No, I didn't tag the doe. It was before sun up and I couldn't make out whether it was a button buck or doe, so I hesitated. When I finally determined it was a doe I drew back and the dang arrow plopped off the rest. By the time I got it back up, she had turned and all I saw was deer butt. [:'(][:@] Thursday and saturday, buddy Bill and I will head down south fora refuge hunt. Hopefully, I'll be able to score! Congrats KC!! |
RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread

RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
Well my buddy who I allowed to hang a stand on my property saw a brute the other night. He said he would roughly score 120 which is a nice boy here in West Mich in my opinion. The wind is perfect for where I believe he is bedding and going.. Hopefully I get a peak at him tomorrow morning.. nice cold night! wish me luck

RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread
Okay Sparrow, go and get him - then let your buddy back on your property!! Good luck.
I'm hoping everyone else on the team is gearing up for the rut. My son is out of school (6th grade)Thurs and Fri so I think I'll take a day off and take him out. He says he wants to do a morning hunt. We'll see. I scored my buck today. He came in at 71 4/8. It's now posted on the official score card. Good luck to all. It's getting exciting out there. |
