hi guys, it's been a while since i checked in. i have been out several times, just haven't killed anything yet. seen a few smaller bucks but i let them walk. hopefully the guys who gun hunt next to the land wi hunt will let them walk this year too. should do ok, have a stand in a great spot at the end of a water way cutting threw a corn field and it is like a highway to and from bedding area. corn is still up and getting ready to be cut so that is where i'll be all this weekend. trail cam shows at least 4 different bucks that are 140 class or better running this area so i should get a shot or 2 this weekend i hope. to change subject a little here is a link to EBAY where my buddy is selling one of his mounts from way back. really nice deer to say the least. he said it was just collecting dust. he didnt have this thing on the wall, he moved last year and never put anything back up . said his house is too small . but anyway i thought you might like to see a really nice buck .

Well, my refuge hunt was a bust. :(I saw a "spork" lol. He came right in to my grunts. He was more spike than fork. His spikes were about 10 inches and the little bitsy forks were about an inch each. :D

Well Monie, too bad you didn't get the big one on the refuge hunt. I read somewhere else that you got a nice doe. Congrats on that one. There's still plenty of season time ahead and hopefully we'll start bringing in some more points for the team.
I took my 12 year old outthis pastSunday afternoon. He didn't get a chance to take a shot but we saw several deer which kept it exciting. We had a really big doe come out and was probably at 30 yards (20 yards is the limit for my son). It was too dark for a shot anyway. That was the biggest doe I think I have ever seen! It was a really good experience for him to see just how alert these things are.

Yes, I've been going out A LOT. Driving back and forth from school is not too bad hour and ten min. So I get out quite a bit even during the week with school. It's only an hour 10 min drive. But NOW day lights savings time, or "real" time I think it would be now is putting a damper on that a bit. I've been seeing a lot of bucks, I know, a "good" problem to have. But this time of year I like to hunt where the does are, but the thing is...I DON'T. I've seen I think 3 does on stand this season and prob 8 different bucks. All these bucks are forks, sixes, or basket rack 8's. I've drawn back on them most of them. But I KNOW there are big deer in my woods, I've seen them. Just have to find them now. Another thing thats screwy is the rifle season opened here in MN last sat. We have family hunting our property for one more weekend comming up and then they are out of here. No one has shot anything yet, but a lot of scent is out there now. I have a "honey" hole that only I know where it is. Its on a "hump" in the middle of a swamp. Should be a retreat for the pressured deer. I'm sitting there ALL day sat. Hopefully it pays of. Sorry that got so dang long. Bit of a rant. lol. GOOD LUCK!

edit: School is going good! I like my classes and professors a lot! Meeting with my advisor to get classes and discuss majors (even though I know that I want to be "when I grow up:D"

RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread

HAD THE BEST HUNT OF MY LIFE TONIGHT...sat for a little bit watching birds make alot of noise in front of me in some brush. I then hear deer noise behind me ,,,I turn around and see a deer making a whole bunch of noise. Then I See a huge rack tearing the branch of a tree up!! I knew he was a nice one being able to see his rack through all the trees and brush. After I stood up I gave the Can a try. Im not sure if he heard it or not , but he did proceed to cut across to where I needed him to be. When I got a clear look at him, man o man I havent ever seen a buck that big while on the stand!! He looked like a huge 3.5 year old 8, pry 130# and thats huge for where I hunt in southwest MI IMO. I WAS SHAKIN IN MY BOOTS. He got to about 40 yards out which is about the max I will shoot , but the stand I was hunting in didnt offer a lane. I needed him to come about 10 yards south in any direction and I WOULD HAVE HAD A CHANCE!! Just my luck he goes north and continues to tear up yet another scrape. I try to grunt him this time and he looks up as I freeze every muscle in my body, he looks down, and then he proceeds to tear up his scrape.. I grunted him again but same response...he finally walked off.. And not so long after I had several deer also all around me at dark just being louder then can be. ITS PRIME TIME!!! Im going out in the morning

Do you think its possible he saw me? I honestly don't think he did by how he wasent alert at all.

-Sparrow

RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread

I don't think he saw you. I think he was more interested in his scrapes. I was reading an article about calling in big deer. It states that you have to use the deeper grunts and larger rattling antlers to get their attention. The article said that mature bucks won't respond to puny calls or rattles during the rut. So, give it a try. Make it sound like two brutes are going at it. You might get that big boy's attention.

Good luck!

RE: 11-Official Team 11 Pernicious Predators Thread

Well team,

This has been one of the most frustrating but fun years in the woods I have ever had. The Season is no where near over, but the rut is quickly winding down. So far I've passed on a total of 5 different bucks. I honestly have seen a total of 5 doe this whole year. So that means from what I've seen this year, that the deer population in my woods is way down, and the buck to doe seems to be 1:1. Now, I haven't got out hunting NEARLY as much as previous years, you know because of school and everything. But I have been hunting a fair amount. With the freezing temps here, I may have to switch up my stratagies for the late season. I firmly believe that MOST of the deer on our property (400 acres) are in the HUGE tamarack swamp. It's a deer haven. There is one "hump" that is fairly accessable, and with the freeze, I may be able to sneak onto it. The outskirts of the swamp are full of sign but I do not think they are comming out until late (after shooting time). Getting to the hump, though tough (jumping deer/scent...etc.), just may be my key to success during the remainder of the season. Sorry I got long winded, basically thinking out loud, and I invite all of you to do the same. Good Luck.

Your Ever Trying Captain,
Kyle.

Hi guys, just wanted to let you know I'm still here and still hunting. I'm not one for posting a whole bunch and I do stop by from time to time and read this post. Just really busy with everything and my mother has cancer and I am pretty much taking care of her needs and have been for a little over a year so I am busy more often than not. Just wanted to touch base and let you know I am still working for us. I got a good picture of a nice buck I have been seeing and I am going to try and post it here. I passed several smaller bucks during gun season here in Ohio last week so I could still get a chance at this guy. I hope this works, I haven't posted a picture on here in a few years. Here goes nothin'

WOW ! it worked. kind of small but that is a 10 point. Kind of hard to tell but look at left side and you can see the crab claw out front and the other 2 plus brow tines. Nice tall rack, good spread on him, not really heavy but a shooter for sure. really even. I've seen him at 75 yrds in the day time and he is NICE ! ! ! but of course I couldn't take a shot with a bow at that range and didn't get to see him when I had a gun or he would be down. Wish me luck and good luck to all of you who haven't scored and congrats. to those who have. I'll check back and update ASAP.

Did you say ...kind of small...?????? Oh, you were talking about the picture.

It should be a good weekend to get out - if you have the time. I don't see me being out there again for a good while, and it's just killing me.
Last time I was out I took my climber to a place where I kept seeing deer crossing an opening. At one point I had 7 does under me and then a small spike but no big guy. 13 deer came past me that afternoonand never had a clue I was there. It was great.
Good luck to everyone out there.

I have, really, truly enjoyed being your captain this season. It was great getting to know some of you better. It is so great there is a forum like this for people to "meet" other people, and get to know them. Even though our team might not win, yes MIGHT not....still have people hunting, myself included, I wouldn't want anyone else on OUR team. Thank you for voting me captain, for some it might not mean much, I mean what did I do? To me it meant something, and I hope in the future I have a some of you on my team, or heck, even get to meet some of you in person. I wish you all the best of luck in all you do, keep it touch, and lets put a fewmore down for team 11, what do you say?
