RE: 13-Official Team 13 Thread
We're getting closer, boys. Most of the bucks around here are getting framed-in, and things are starting to feel like summer.
Dan - I love the paint on the chipper idea. Just watch your damn fingers in those things. We have a work comp client who had a bad episode with an industrial wood chipper.Maybe paint it like a big black horse. We've had a lot of rain lately, but all of the farmers are finally getting their first cut of hay off, so I went out last night and made a little varmint vapor. I was bringin' the rain. ![]() This guy never had a chance. The hog above was a 75 yard chipshot - and believe it or not - he crawled about 5 feet and almost got back down the hole before he expired. Pretty amazing, really. ![]() Shot of the year, so far. 400+ yards ![]() If you look across the skyline, you can see the crown of a huge oak peeking over the horizon. That's about where I was set up on the 400 yarder. I was shooting prone, with the gun anchored tight in my backpack - and I turned it loose down through these limbs and busted him right through the shoulders. Mostly a lucky shot though, b/c I was using hollowpoint 55 grain ammo, which is really wind-sensitive and tends to float a little off-center at long range... Just 2 confirmed kills. I think I killed another one around 350, but he got back down the hole. See, once I get out to 350+, my gun loses a lot of KE (especially with the low b.c. ammo), and the bullets aren't as devastating - often there's no exit wound. So,if I get a guthit, I get a lot of floppers and crawlers at really long range. Sometimes they get back in the hole. Attractive, eh? LOL You can usually tell by the sound if it's a hit. __________________________________________________ __________ If I had my video camera - I'd have had some awesome footage of a monumental whiff. It was ahair-grazing shot from ridge-to-ridgeat about 600 yards. My hold was about 6 feet high, with a little right-to-left wind drift - and I swear to god, I burned the hair off this sucker's back. I had my buddy out with me - man it sure is nice to have a spotter. We hung out until blackout - and I got to glass 6 deer, all doe/fawns and one superscrub that might wind up going about 10 inches once he's all done growing. June 26 was not a good day to be a groundhog. |
RE: 13-Official Team 13 Thread
Fran that looks like fun. 600 yards is a crap load of air between you and that hog. The furthest shot I could take on my place is about 200 yards. I nailed a porky at 250 with the 7mm, I saw him up in an oak tree and took him out.It was funn watching his fat arse fall out of that tree.
Al you must be young because wood chipping is not FUN.It was a the hardest thing I did all year. 8 hours of hauling brush and ramming it through the but end of that noisey bastard was not a walk in the park. Maybe if I wasn't hung over it wouldn't have been so bad:DJust kidding I only had 3 beers the night before. We still aren't getting any good pics. There's alot of scrub bucks. My neighbor thinks we have a pic of that big 10 point from last year but I think the deer is too small. If it is him we are going to be in trouble with antler size because he is only a 1/2 of wht he was last year. With the hard winter we had it might have took a toll on him.We stopped putting out corn because of the bears I saw 1 Saturday and had a 3 differant sets of tracks going past my cabin. We are heading back up for the 4th it's family time so no work just alot of play. So everybody have a good holiday and stay safe. |
RE: 13-Official Team 13 Thread
Go nuts Dano! And don't blow your fingers off with firecrackers. Sounds like you worked your ass off with the woody woodchipper. That sounds like a real mother of a tough day.
Do you have your cameras over mineral sites, or are you even allowed to put out minerals in WI? As for the long-range shooting - it's all about hills and fields. You could never shoot that far through the woods around here - it's always from one ridge to the next. |
RE: 13-Official Team 13 Thread
It was a rough day but it didn't kill me so all is good. We can put out mineral sites and have 3 sites plus we always dump a couple of blocks in our ponds. We have cameras over 2 sites and we are getting some pics but they're small. The third site we stay away from because we know there are a couple of camera shy pigs out there and we don't want to spook them.
I here ya about the ridge to ridge shooting. I just can't at my place it's to damn flat. Here is a picture of the last food plot I'm going to put in. Last winter we went out and clear cut my North swamp. My buddy had some time and some machinery and went back to start clearing the stumps. He's about 1/2 way done. I plant plant cranberrys back there next year. |

Wishing everyone a safe and fun 4th of July!
Here's a little entertainment. WOW - these things have a lot of power, can see why they are no longer allowed! Make sure to turn up the volume on your computer for maximum affect!! :D Enjoy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKA6lzjOyxo |

Jason - awesome video. I went through an "explosives" phase. LOL Surprised I kept all my fingers.
Dan - what kind of pine trees are those? Looks like it will be a pretty large foodplot by the time you're done with it. I got access to a new farm last night - and he had just taken the hay off. It gets a lot of deer hunting pressure, so I'll probably use it mainly as a groundhog/turkey spot. Unfortunately, I think the place is already shot out by some other hog hunters(lots of abandoned holes). I did catch one guy peeking his head out. ![]() Varmint Poontang That was 125 yards, .22-250, Winchester hollow point ammo. It usually doesn't explode quite like that. Kinda crazy. Awesome spot to shoot though, probably 400 yard+ shooting for 270 degrees. At dark, I did see a bachelor group of 4 bucks come out to feed in the clover, but the biggest one was probably a 70" 3x3. I dropped my gun off and took a ride around the hood with the spotlight - saw about 50 deer, maybe 15 bucks, including a couple decent ones. Nothing to write home about though. |
RE: 13-Official Team 13 Thread
Jason nice video.I blew up some stuff this weekend.
Fran- The tress are jack pines. The plot is about1 1/2acre it looks bigger. He fininished it up Friday It looks good. I went out and looked at it Saturday morning I saw a big 10 standing right in the middle of it. He looks like he might go 150". After he left I walked out there and it has cranbery's growing in it already. We shot 9 ground squirels this weekend. I got 2 more stands hung 1 for my wife and 1 for general hunting a good scouting stand. We are still seeing bears so no good pics yet. Maybe next time I go up in 2 weeks I put some out. |
RE: 13-Official Team 13 Thread
Fran - That head shot is crazy, I've never seen anything like it!
Dan - Sounds like your making some progress! Can't wait for the season! Will probably put my cameras out towards the end of the month - along with hanging another stand or two by the end of Aug... |

Well boys, it's getting to be glassing season... I was out last night for one more evening before I leave for Holiday.
I finally got access to groundhog hunt a big ridge that's about 700 yards across from one of my bowhunting farms. Where I shoot hogs is all fields, no woods, so I'm not disrupting anything over there. All the woods are across the road. This allows me to sit up there and crank groundhogs off of the back ridge, and glass the deer over on the next ridge - where I bowhunt sometimes. Last night started off slow - killed 2 hogs. Here's a cool picture. ![]() All I could see was the top of his head, peeking out of his hole right before dark. I had about 3/4" of head to shoot at, and I scalped him. He was a 12.5 pound boar, a whopper groundhog - biggest of the year so far. I know the farmer will be happy to havehimexterminated, b/c he had a hole dug that looked like a moon crater. Back to the deer scouting - I had a mother and two fawns come out to feed at 8:45. Then 3 bucks came out at 9:00. It was a long way off, but they were all fairly small - the biggest one framed out around 10-12" wide. Right at blackout, a bigger buck came out into the beans - looked like a smallish 2 year old - maybe 13-14". Even on low power, I could barely make his frame in the scope. I packed it up and went home. Be back in a week. Anyway, you guys have a couple nice weekends. Hopefully, I'll get some pics of some European topless hotties for Team DH's enjoyment. |
