Congrats on your doe Hungar!! Now lay the smack down on a nice buck!!!

ORIGINAL: HUNGAR

Starting to cool down here, shot a doe last night in the high winds. The Drenalin and Slick Tricks are officially broken in now, time to test them out on a big boy! Pics are in the bowhunting section.

RE: 27-Official Team Bucks, Bows & Bros Thread

I went out yesterday & put up a stand where I took a Doe last year & passed on 3 different Bucks & one that would have been a good buck-120 + but I have been holding off for 3 different Bucks I have seen in the past 3 years-all real biggies. I have gone without filling my Buck tagbut not because I have not had the chance at many in that 3 years. I am not normally aTrophy hunter but I have kinda made it a who is smarter than who with these 3. So far, I have been the dumber of them all. I have had all of them within 60 yards of my stand at one time or another in the last 3 years. If I get them within 30-35yds, you will get to see their pics.
Wife having surgery soon so will be able to get out once that is over. Been a tough 6 weeks for sure & it's pretty depressing when someone you Love is in so much pain & you can't help them. Good Luck guys.

We wish your wife the best and hope for a quick recovery after her surgery.

Good luck with those 3 bucks once you are back in the trees!

Haven't been able to check any standings-what team is doing well? Anyone know?
I will hopefully do our team some good about the 1st of Nov.. Anyone else taken a Buck on our team?

I was only able to get out on Oct 1st. I was supposed to go sunday but ended up accidently sleeping in late and woke up to a rain storm. Decided to watch the Bears loose instead. Hopefully I will be able to get out in 2 weeks. I don't think that anyone else has gotten any bucks on our team since ahunter.

I have not taken anything-yet to get out. Will be in Iowa City with wife next couple days & her surgery.
I looked at the Bucks taken-congratulations to those fellas down south on some nice Bucks. I've Bowhunted many states & sometimes it is tough to take a good Buck in those southern & other heavy hunted states like Pa & Ws.. Good Luck to all.

RE: 27-Official Team Bucks, Bows & Bros Thread

Got the wife home from her surgery & things look better. She has been in horrible pain for over 2 months.
My daughter went out for the 1st time on their farm & saw nothing on stand. I went for the FIRST time yesterday also, only to a stand I have on CITY property (special rules apply & qualification). It's just a few min. from where I live so I can get home if wife needs me (we have a 16 year old daughter at home also to help her when I am gone).
ANYWAY-got in the stand about 3:45. 4:30 I had a busted up 8 point-16" spread, 2" bases(now 6) walk rightin front of my stand at about 10 feet (I am up 15' ladder stand). Then 5 min later his twin brother (only a good solid 6) comes to the same spot. At 5:00 I had a Doe pass at 20 yards but she never stopped where I could get a shot (real thick where I am set up). Then at 5:30 I had a Fork horn at 15 yds. that his ears were bigger than his horns. It was a great start for my FIFTY FIRST year of Whitetail Bowhunting & 1st time out. I just wish a Buck like these would come by the daughter (or bigger).Either of the two would be a great Buck for a beginner. I will do my best to put a decent one on the ground for our team this year.
It just going to get better from now on fellas-Good Luck.

bad weekend for me, took the compound out Sat morning after driving 2 1/2 hours to my Dad's and something happened ........ both the cam and the wheel looked like they'd been hit 10-12 times with a braodhead file [:@] I cannot figure out what happened, impossible to hunt with it, drov eback home, took it to a local archery shop, he thinks he can buff it down and still use them ( the channels were not damaged in his estimate )

anyway ....... leaving in 5 days for a huge hunt, and got these problems ?? damn

6pm had MaMa & 3 of her young ones at 15 yds. & DADDY showed up 80 yds away. I figured he would just come to the Does but they decided to meet him. They walked toward him & then trotted off with him following. He was Never closer than 50 yds.
Big 8-real big...

Taken 3 doe. Been seeing some really good bucks. Just waiting on the right 1. Should happen in the next couple weeks. Finding some really good scrape lines and seeing bucks chasing doe.

Just got back from hunting in my favorite spot in South Dakota and it was great. I managed to kill this 28 3/4" wide muley. I wish he was the first buck I killed becouse he will score higher than the other that I entered. I will get better pictures later along with the score. Good luck guys and get some more points on the board.

Well hopefully Randy's mule won't be our only one on the board this season. I was able to get out today. Had 2 bucks come about 60 yards from me but that was it. Will try again in 2 weeks!

Could have shot this fella last night. Had a 170 inch with him that I was waiting for and didnt end up getting either. Its starting to fire up really good here. I seen 4 shooters last night. I also just leased up a nice 500 acre farm that is loaded up with big deer. Hopefully I can put some inches on the board in the next week. I am on VACATION!

Been real windy the last 3 days-today is calm & I will be in the woods around 1pm. I have seen a couple real good shooters but at a distance. Does around them but at a great distance. I think today should be the day for me. I will have the rattle horns & Tinks hangin in the right spot PLUS I "WILL" put out a scent trail. I am a great believer in sex scents as I have taken several Bucks with their nose on my scent rag or follow my scent trail right to me. IT WORKs for me. Good luck fellas-it's time to rack em up.

Had to drive 60 miles yesterday. Saw 2 small bucks along the road-1 small forky & then a little 6 around 2pm.
Coming back home saw a very good 10 point after dark(7pm). No Does.
Will be in the stand today. Overcast but warm.

Big Duane 11-12-2007 05:49 PM

RE: 27-Official Team Bucks, Bows & Bros Thread

I'm sorry all .... I'm back from KS, hunted 6 hard days and on the morning of the 7th day had my chance - a 145"-150" 8 pointer, I mean a MONSTER 8 pointer, he was a great deer. Long story short, I shot low on him, nicked his leg, saw him chasing does, no injured deer at least, but other than a meat doe I didn't get my big KS whitetail like I'd wanted [:o]

Overall, the hunting in w KS is not nearly as good as it was 2-3 year ago. Fewer and fewer bucks, I saw that one "shooter" from my stand and that was the only one - in 7 days of hunting [:o]

I'll hunt quite a bit more in AR here, but I was banking on my contribution to team 27 coming from this KS hunt.

RE: 27-Official Team Bucks, Bows & Bros Thread

Duane-Don't feel bad. No matter what anyone "THINKS" it is always tough. I have "LIVED" in Ill., Iowa all my life in "BIG" Buck country. They just don't walk by every chance your in the field. I have been Bowhunting over 50 years & those that connect consistently have several factors (usually). 1st, several hours afield, some type property the Bucks are kinda protected so they can grow big like the people who practice management (now) OR some type sanctuary/park ect. where no hunting is allowed bordering where they hunt. I have Bowhunted many tracts of excellent private properties & it usually boiled down to how much gun hunting went on with family or friends of the owner. Not saying that is always the story but anyway-at least you got away for a little fun vacation. Oh, I have yet to draw my bow-haven't even had a Doe where I can fill an antlerless tag (Iowa) & I have passed on 3 small Bucks. Son in law has been hunting solid starting his 2nd week & taken 1 antlerless & passed on 1 little 6 & another forky. His buddy has had 1 shot at a Doe (Iowa). We have ALL seen decent Bucks but not close enough. My son & brother live 30 miles away in Ill. & neither of them have drawn their bow on anything yet. We are all Bowhunting excellent places & have ALL taken many deer with a bow. None of us are, so to speak, "Rookies". So, when you try to close the deal in a week, it's TOUGH, no matter where. Take one of those BIG southern Bucks & I will try to add a decent Buck & we should end up the "WINNER". Good Luck to all.

RE: 27-Official Team Bucks, Bows & Bros Thread

it was a very successful hunt, all my hunts are, I just didn't kill a big buck. I brought back memories, photos, 100 pounds of boneless deer meat (burgerized all of it and then I got the straps too) - just didn't complete what I went there for is all

HUNGAR 11-14-2007 02:43 PM

RE: 27-Official Team Bucks, Bows & Bros Thread

Same boat here Big D, I was hoping to score a big one on the federal hunt, but didn't get a chance.

Been seeing some good bucks around home and now that gun season is upon MI tomorrow my standards will have fallen. I didn't see any sign of a rut in my area- no grunting, chasing, or tailing. I usually have a great rut with it busting loose all around me, but not this year. Oh well, I still have the late season.

My moment of shame, I did put an arrow into the shoulder of a nice 120" deer. The shot was alot more quartering away than I had origionally thought and I hit right where I wanted to (tight behind the shoulder), but I think with the angle it tucked into the leg without penetrating the chest. After the shot, I knew I hit bone seeing the arrow running straight along side him. I was hoping that it went into the chest and his leg snapped it off while running, but he was holding the leg up and running on three. Tracked for about 400yds and he stopped bleeding, while circling for blood I get a call from the neighbor (land that I hunt), she asks if I shot a huge buck? I say yes, why? She says, it is standing in my driveway with an arrow sticking out of it which is about 70yds from where we are looking for blood. Kept looking and nothing. Three days later I did follow a stink smell to a dead spike 12inch tines with a 11 1/2 inch spread. I thought for a moment when I seen the deer laying there I could have some peace of mind, but I don't so I am still kicking myself for this. It was a 11yd shot that just happened too quick for me. If I only could do it all over again.

I get sick every time I think about this, I really need to get over it. This is the first deer I've lost in over 10yrs which is probably 30 or more deer. That last sentence wasn't meant to brag or make it seem better I was just trying to show that I know how to track and make good shooting decisions. I really feel that if he doesn't get an infection that he will make it and we can battle again. I would really like to get him on the cam for a little peace of mind. Thatis it, thissorry sucker is done rambling.

Hungar-to bad. I live on the Ia./Ill. border (North end of state) & my area rut hasen't been the usual intense, bucks runnin either.
Ill. gun season opens this weekend so may drive to a few check stations & see what is being brought in. My Iowa Gun season isn't until Dec., so I have a couple weeks left.

Well fellas-wife back in hospital in Iowa City-had to have her back opened up again Thanksgiving day (1 month after 1st operation). Very sick at this point. If I get out at all it's gonna be one of those "COLD" late season monsters.
Hope all had a good Thanksgiving with family. We cancelled ours due to her surgery. I had a hospital cardboard grilled cheese & wife had pudding & I also spent my Birthday with her in the hospital the 21st..
Good Luck to the rest of you-we still have plenty of time. HAve faith, it only takes "ONE".....

Well our team forum has been pretty quiet lately. I hope that everyone is doing well and had a good Thanksgiving.

ahunter- I am sorry to hear the news about your wife. We are all praying for her to have a quick, & safe recovery.

This hunting season has not been what I had planned on. Family obligations have really restricted my hunting time this year. I have only managed to make it out a few times and haven't had a bit of luck. I am still hoping to get out a bunch over the next month and a half that we have left here in IL. Hopefully I will be able to put some points up on the board for our team.

My wife & I will get through this just fine-we have lot's of very good family & friends& lots of prayers.
I have until mid Jan & it only takes one time out, right. We never give up.
Good Luck fellas-go drop a few of those late season biggies.
I was headed to the hospital & saw about a 130, 10 bed down in some horse weeds 60 feet from the highway-he's gonna grow real big-perfect place to NEVER get shot-right on the edge of town.

RE: 27-Official Team Bucks, Bows & Bros Thread

Well, I finally connected on one. It was an 8pt with 5 on one side and 3 on the other, he is not huge, but is one of my most memorable bucks I've shot. My oldest son Hunter (9) was with me on the hunt. A spike came in first quartering towards and Hunter was whispering "shoot", he must have said it 30 times. The 8pt followed and I got more "shoot" from Hunter, finally he turned and I was able to put a good shot on him. He went about 65yds and piled up, I had origionally thought I might have caught liver so I let him go for 5hrs. I looked at the arrow and no bright bubbly blood, it looked darker like liver so I let it lie. Upon inspection it took out both lungs and I belive clipped off the aorta which explains the darker blood on the arrow.

Odd tracking in 8in of snow, no blood for about 20 yds and then it was spotty up until the last 15yds. I would have expected more with the low exit, but he was filled up with blood on the inside.

The best part was having Hunter in stand with me and after the shot high fiving and hugging him and hearing him say "ya got him dad, ya got him". Hopefully here are a couple pics to follow. I will enter him in the contest when I get it back from my buddy the processor.

Hunter is the clowner, my other son Garhet is holding the trophy.

Good luck to all for the rest of the season and a safe and happy holidays.

Chris
