Tough weekend guys.

Here's a not so brief recap:

Sat. morning get on stand well before dark, deer moving around me, stops at daylight, dad was to pick me up at 9:40 a.m. So of course after 3.5 hours in the stand, a fork, spike and doe (wierd combo for this time of year) come towards me right about 9:40. Oh I forgot that we had some deadfall, which partially obstructed one of my shooting lanes.[:@] It was intense as they moved from 100 yards to about 15 yards, of course right to the spot behind the deadfall. I could have shot the fork, but was waiting for the doe, who also happened to be bringing up the rear. I had a few very iffy shots, but wasn't going to take them. I did watch her looking at me with a honey locust pod hanging out of her mouth, which was funny. I needed the doe to take about 2 more steps and then I hear the Mule coming and off they go.

Then my poor dad and I are loading up a cultipacker on a trailer and the thing flips, hits him and knocks him off the trailer onto the rock hard ground. My dad has never spent a day in the hospital and there we are in the ER and he has a 2nd degree separated shoulder. I went late that evening (he wanted me to). His bowseason is on hold. His pain was better Sunday.

Next morning, back on the same stand (in the woods - with 2 white oaks, etc.), lots of deer moving in the dark! About 7:15 here come the same 3 deer from another direction. I saw them and while being really careful (its tough with 3 sets of eyes), I slowly got into position. Everything felt perfect, got my breathing back to steady, smooth draw, didn't feel like I flinched, they didn't see me, perfect broadside - 23 yards. But, the one thing I noticed was I aimed for the crease (should have aimed a couple inches back = don't know why I did that) and as soon as I hit the release I noticed that her front leg was kicked back. I could tell I hit her. I wait half an hour and go to the spot. No blood, no arrow (I looked for the arrow for 30 minutes and knew exactly where I shot her due to a tree). Then I picked up a great bloodtrail about 5 yards away. I followed it easily for about 50 yards and they I noticed it thinning out a little bit. Remembering my rules, I backed out and left for 2 hours, and went pick up a veteran bowhunter who was hunting 350 yards from me. We tracked her for about 100 yards and then she got up about 20 yards in front of us and ran (not well) for about 75 yards and it looked like she bedded down. I could have finished her with a shotgun, but not a bow. We went back now with 3 people about 3 hours later - at this point about 5 hours from the shot. We tried to set an ambush, but no deer. We then tracked her about 100 more yards and the blood ran out. We did a grid search and did everything I could. Our woods is so thick and full of palmettos that you can't see a thing. After the trail went dry, we couldn't do any more. In addition to getting home really late and pissing off my wife I didn't sleep well last night.

I must have hit the shoulder blade and gotten a deflection into the guts (and got really unlucky) b/c I found some small bits of bone in the blood and then we found her chit with some very dark blood in it.

Guys, this bowhunting thing is damn tough. Right now it is kicking my arse. It is making me a much
better hunter - I'm getting deer close without them spotting or smelling me and I'm learning more
about their behaviors, but this is killing me.

Germ, even though I probably made a bad shot, I'm done with the Strikers.

If you got this far, thanks for reading. :D

Shed,
great buck! I was gone for the last 4 days and missed the original post. I know that it is really special when you hunt an individual buck and get him. Wow! From the ground no less. Awesome hunt, congradulations.

Greg, coming from a man that could teach me a thing or two about hunting old whitetail bucks...it means a lot! Thanks so much, I really had a great day the other day. I am taking him to the Taxi today.. not abad birthday present..! I couldnt be happier..

Holy Smoly! what a weekend Will.. Man I am really sorry to hear about your dads mishap, I hope he will recover fine in time..wow..

On your doe, dang bud, dont beat yourself up to much. This type of thing happens. You did everything you could to find that deer. Your right though, the bowhunting thing is so much different than rifle hunting. A hit like that with a rifle would have pounded her in the ground. All I can say is keep your head up and like we all do when this type of thing goes wrong... learn from it...

Take care Will and get back after them. Get some sleep too!

Troy,

Thanks. I'm probably putting too much pressure on myself. Even my wife is putting pressure on me
- "All that time and you still haven't killed nothing." [:@]

I'm pretty much automatic/competent with a rifle (10 of last 10 or so). Your right, that shot would
have dropped her in her tracks.

Bowhunting is so much more intense than rifle hunting - but easy it is not. I now have the utmost
respect for guys that consistently kill with the bow.

LBH..hope your dad is feeling better. Sounds like you did all you could searching.

My wife says about the same thing...."is the freezer full yet ?" This is my first time hunting anything so she's just messing with me. I think

It was a bit frustrating this weekend hearing all the muzzle loader shots in two days when I haven't taken one shot with my bow since Sept 1. But I'm loving the heck out of it and am learning a ton as I go.

It took my wife about 5 years of marriage to understand.. I actually took her with me on hunts in the beginning and shed hunts.. she'll learned real fast how much work it was and really understood once I drug her out there LOL ...now a days when I ask her go scouting or shed hunting..she just smiles and says.. My wife asks me Saturday......"Do you have a place for all this meat"?

Sorry....but she did say that.;)

Lebeau......I said on another thread....there are 3 types of hunters:

1 - Those that have injured or even lost a deer.
2 - Those who have injured or lost a deer but will not admit it.
&
3 - Those that haven't had enough opportunities for something bad to happen

You can do everything right.....and still something can go wrong. These animals are living, breathing targets. They rarely stand perfectly still and accentuate their 12 rings. I know how you feel. I hate it for you. I have yet to loose an arrow this year that I'm ashamed of. I couldn't say that, last year....and yet I have an unanswered question on a doe out there, this year. Keep your head up.

Good luck to you all. I'm beginning to settle down and get ready for the fun part of the season. I can't help our score, now.....but I can sure cheer you all on!

Man Will, what a weekend you went thru. I hope your dad is getting better. And we all have been there on the lost deer. But it never gets any easier. Sometimes you never will figure out what happened and others you know as soon as you touch the trigger something just wasn't right. You just gotta put it behind you and learn from the experience.

I went out this evening after work. There was a cold front blowing in and we were in between rain bands. I looked at the radar and figured I had a couple of hours of dry time, so I headed out. It was a cool wind blowing out of the North. I figured the deer would be moving early. Well there was 1 moving early. A little 6 pointer came out and fed on acorns all around me for 20 minutes or so. I kept waiting for his big brother to show up, but he was the only deer I saw. Then right as it was getting dark it started to pour, so i got out in a hurry.

Haven't heard from the other guys lately...

Rob... waiting to hear how the new land is shaping up! That harely should be in the garage by now..no excuse not to be hunting ;):D:D

Guys, I had an interesting encounter today... For what ever reason on my way to the taxidermist shop... about 2 hours north of my house...right near the Canadian border I stopped into a local hunting shop.. I've always know the biggest whitetails in the state come from this county...going to shows and keeping tabs...etc.. but dang..I was just blown away at a couple bucks these guys had hanging in their shop from last season! Monsters with mass like Canadian bucks.. just something I dont see very often where I live.. I got to talking to the owner and he said they have those canadian strain of genetics in the deer in that county.. hmmmmmmm not sure if he knew what he was talking about but a little voice in the back of my head has been telling me for years to start traveling up there to find a hunting area.. after what I saw today.. I am really missing out right here in Idaho.. I told my wife tonight..we are gonna start looking for a little piece of property up there .. Before I die I want to shoot a booner buck with my bow from this darned state! LOL

peace out guys..

Troy I have the same goal here in MI, I may be 90 with a Cross bow, but I am going to do it. Every year I see one and I have been hunting a buck since 2003 who is alive. Last year I lost track of him, but I found his rub. Easy to find because his G2's mark up the trees 13'' behind where he has rubbed. I have had him dead nuts twice. 2003 and 2004 both within 15 yds and both times bow back. He never gave me the shot i wanted. In 2004 I watch him for 2:00 PM until dark. He never left the safty of the corn and CRP. Right now I have a feeling he is across the river. He lives in corn, I have not seen him yet. He should be 7.5 years old. His name is

"The log splitter Buck" He got the name on a cold day in Dec 2003. He was coming right to me with his harem of does. Dad fired of the log splitter, LOL Deer change their course. I was hunting close to the house, little funnel they use to cross the street.
This buck has taught me one thing, even if it all works out you do everything right, he can and will slip by you. I really have to focus this year. I am going to put in more all dayers then i have in the past. I have 2 already

RE: 43- Official Team Chaos Thread

It's gonna rain here for the next few days but it's much needed. I did get across the street yesterday for a little scouting. It's very similar to my side of the ridge. With my limited knowledge of scouting I did find what I think are some good places to setup. Going down the barbed wire fence line I found two dips in the fence with well worn paths and some hair. It's very thick over there as I expected but at the bottom along the creek bed there are a few open areas with some trees that I can use my climber. The hillside is pretty steep and I think I can use some of the deadfall cedars I saw as a ground blind. In this area there are several trails that come together.

I'm off work Nov 5 - 9 and plan on hunting all of it !

I'm guessing the big buck itch can never be scratched. :D

John, we've got acorns (no buckeyes :D)and that's what the deer are on right now - of course my hunting
is out of commission for a week or so due to highly pregnant wife and work. [&:]

Rob, fence crossings are a great spot. I wish we had some obstructions like that, it can really funnel
your deer. I've read stories of good bucks killed at gate or fence openings.

Troy, I am luck to have a wife that understands my obsession with hunting whitetails. I managed to kill a buck and a doe last year, before she was diagnosed on Oct. 25. I still got in a few hunts after that, but was limited and just didn't have my heart in it. I spent a lot of time at the hospitol while she was there from Oct 25- Just before Christmas.

This year she told me she didn't want to be the reason I didn't get to hunt as much as I want. So she said as long as she is able to function on her own,I should just hunt like I want to. Well it doesn't always work out that way but I must say I do get out my fair share.

And I am constantly reminded of why I married her in the first place.

And you're the only computer geek I like.

I'm gonna try to get back out there soon. Going to pick up some Slick Trick magnums at my local
shop right now. Time for a new bh. With second daughter coming around Dec. 12th, I will have
to hunt when I can and as hard as I can.

With all this rut talk beginning, I thought I would let you guys and gal know that I may hunt one of
the latest rutting areas in the country (even in my state). For a long time I didn't believe the old
timers that it was around the last week December and first week of January, but it is. I even got a
hold of some information from a guy whose been documenting the rut in our state and this matched
his observations. It is wierd that areas even south of us can have ruts up to a month earlier.
This is also why we were the only zone that couldn't take a doe the first 2 weeks of the season
(fawn survival issues). Maybe that will mean I come through late.;) I have a few stands that I
think will be great rut stands - maybe not for a monster - but something that will help.

I was out this afternoon in the neighborhood. I hunted the same property I had seen 9 deer on a couple of weeks ago. This is the second time in a row I have hunted there and not seen a deer.

I might have to go back to where I got my doe last week. That is the same place I had the pics of the bucks earlier. They might be hanging around there with all of the acorns in the area.

Troy, I saw a few days ago you bought some snow mobiles. I had one back in the late 70'searly 80's, when we used to get snow around here. Those things are a blast. It is really amazing the places you can go with them. I always said, if you had the guts to point it up the hill, it would make it. I wouldn't get much use out of one these days, it rarely snows here any more.

Hey guys,

Hunted last night, saw one doe and one nice young 4x5. Both came out to feed about 150 yards from my stand. It was a nice evening, warm though, but beautiful out. I have been coaching a basketball camp each day after school until 4 pm..sinceTues...So I raced home for only about 1 hour of actually sitting in my spot last night..still it just felt goodto be out...Today is my last day of the camp.

Oh, my elk tag is good this week too, starting today! So if a bull comes by hes getting wacked.. I dont care the size of bull either.. My freezer is VOID of elk ...which we really need some and so does Dee's mom. I have two great elk/whitetail stands I havent hunted since DAN/HIA was here, thats were I will be tomorrow.. Today after campIm headingto a stand close to home that holds a chance at elk too..

John, I know the feeling.. I have many of those hunts.. No deer, especially in the early season. Just keep after them as you will, The big boys will be in tow soon!

Snowmobiles..we got a nice 900 miles... 700 Yamaha VMax and a 546 mile ...700 articat powder special..both in great shape hardly any miles.. We have an older 89 480 polaris...we basically bought them for FAMILY outtings this winter and playing ..since we tend to have long winters.. the boys are gettin big enough now that we can all enjoy them! We 1000's of miles of loggin roads we can ride and access here in the winters.. its AMAZING and a great way to enjoy the cold!

Gary, I am right there with you bud, bucks from 100 to 180 class but none in the 150's! My brother has a great looking 150 buck, I've posted it before but just in case you havent see him I'll post it in here again ...

Arrow! Good luck teammate! get one down and put us in the lead or at least get us closer.. I'd be lieing if I didnt want..CHAOS to win this darned thing! Go get em team!

I am taking 3/4 a day off tomorrow to go to Brians Funeral in St. Maries.

Thanks to everyone that said a prayer for Dale and Chris (his mom and dad) and Brians two children... I know you guys dont know them personally, but I am firm believer in the power of prayer. Thank you and to anyone else that reads this that gave their thoughts/prayers..

Troy

Well Troy I guess it our year to be messed with.

My favorite neighbors shot a deer this morning, pushed it across the river. They drove there truck right through my CRP field where MR. Mass has bedded. My Uncle say Mr. Mass tending a doe last friday. Way he describe it she was ready. He stayed right behind her the whole time.

They only good news is corn is coming off every where so the deer are going to get pushed around a bit. Pisses me off I spent 2000.00 grand on that field and have never drove through it. These ass-Jockies drive right throught it.[:@] My mom was home, but she is not all with it and told thm to go ahead.

I really hate those guys[>:]

Damn,

You work hard on sanctuaries and then jack-legs screw it up. Why would they think they get to
drive through someone else's CRP? I don't even think that is legal.

Trying to be Mr. Positive here - Mr. Mass will probably tolerate one incursion by some yahoos in a truck.

I'm glad we have a canal around the East and North boundaries of our property. But apparently,
as in your case, that isn't always enough.

Going back out to hunt this afternoon. Weather is good, but ML already started at this spot.
