RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Sorry for the long absence, I've just been really busy. I've been shooting a lot lately, my 30-35yd groups are reallyt tightening (at 25 yds, I can generally get most groups touching all shafts, if not darn close). Congrats Kelly on putting one on the board so early! Looks like a trophy, then again, coming from the region I do, that would be categorized as a "monster".

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Only 19 more days until season! Hopefully I will get out and put up a ladder stand on Wednesday or Thursday. Is Kelly the only one with a open season? Sorry if I missed it or cant remember.

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Hey all...well looks as though I'm the only one out in the woods so far, but time is drawing near and i'm sure you're all busy out scouting and making those final preparations. It's supposed to drop into the low 50's over this weekend, so i'm out on a mission to take some does, should be fun. Haven't seen much buck activity since opening morning, so I'm still hopeful to catch a monster on cam and then tag him with my extra tag this year.
Hope all is well with everyone, let's try to keep the momentum rolling, it's a great time of year. Take care. Kelly |
RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Our season opened this past weekend. The woods were "dead" on saturday morning. I heard a few geese in the river, and saw a few birds and that was it. Sunday morning I walked up on 2 or 3 before daylight going to the stand [:@], they ran off and that was all the action I would have that morning. Maybe next time!

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Believe it or not...I'm still alive. Our move is complete and the wireless internet service is FINALLY up and running at my house. Unforturnately, I have some time at work to post but for some reason or another (probably the firewall) I cannot submit anything from the website. I can get to it and view everything but when it comes to posting, it boots me out and acts as though I am a guest.
Anyway, I'm back in business now. CONGRATS Kelly...great deer!!! It looks like we're off to a good start. I was catching up on the posts and it looks like for most of us, the season hasn't even began. I start hunting October 1st. Luckily, behind the old farm-house we just bought, the old owners own about 220 acres; all riverbottom. The elderly gentlemen apparently took a liking to me since he told me that I have sole hunting rights to the entire thing.....UNBELIEVABLE!!! That was biggest worry about moving a couple hours away from what I was used to. I kept wondering, "where am I going to do my hunting". Not only that but the further north you go in Michigan, the more number of people that hunt. I managed to get five tree stands set last weekend and with some help from the guy that used to hunt the same property, I think I've got a few winners out here. Acorns are starting to fall already and it's starting to really cool off. I just finished mowing my grass and I could actually see my breath at about 8pm. Well, that's all for now...I'll talk to you all soon and GOOD LUCK!!! |
RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Good luck to you, SumHunter. Finally got my ILL tag!!!

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Good luck this weekend, everyone! We have a cold front coming in, so maybe they will move a little more.

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Weather has been awesome here this week, mid to low 50s every morning. Definitely makes one feel like season is actually here. I'm heading back out after a week off to work on the doe population. Hope everone that has the opportunity enjoys the weekend and hits the woods. Be safe and they'll be moving soon enough.

Well Team,
I FINALLY GOT MY FIRST DEER WITH A BOW!!!!!!!:D It was a buck but just a nubber...did not realize that till after the fact. My bro was sitting about 150 yards away and saw three deer coming out of the corn to him. They stayed out to far for him and they were headed my way. It was like only 10 min left and he was headed towards me and ended up pushing the deer right to me. They ran in and this one stopped behind a tree, i came to full draw and as it stepped out i put the arrow with a 2 blade rage broadhead right through the heart!!! It wenta grand total of 30 yards and i watched it crash. Now its all bucks on my mind, will probably be hunting hard again in mid-late oct. Good luck all Pines ![]() |

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Why thank you, RD. Treating myself to steak and lobster tonite. Just the way I want it as I'm grilling it, too. Smothered in baby bella shrooms and lots of garlic butter (I can hear my arteries groaning). And Carrot Cake.
I hunted evenings only Sat-Tues. Sat night I saw a buck first, then, some does, all over 150 yds away. Sun. eve had a doe and 2 fawns within shooting distance but, too much vegetation in the way. 15 min later, a beautiful, 2 1/2 yr old perfect 10 pointer still in full velvet within 5-18 yards of me and then walked past a 35 yard lane a while later. He walked. No earn-a-buck tag yet. That came Tues night. Mon & Tues was hot, upper 70's with high humidity. Sweated terribly. Ate backstraps Tues night after getting her to the processor. Didn't get any pics due to the heat and storms coming in. It had rained all day except during evening hunt. Our plots are getting hammered big time. Clover/chickory make up 1/2. The other half is buck forage oats/winter wheat. Excellent combinations. Should do well all season. The girls are hanging out big time and the boys will be making their daylight appearances before long. Should even get a turkey. Saw a nice flock in it just at the opposite end of where I was. So all in all, a good opener. May get back Tues-Fri AM. Then it's work the following wekend and go to Ohio for 5 days hunting in Athens. Then back here for another 5-6 days hunting. Ahhhh, life is good. |

I'm glad to hear you had a great time and the next time you have steak and lobster invite me , you made me hungry just reading about it.

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Well after a week of record heat in KY, we finally got some rain and a much needed cool down. We've been dealing with EHD, which as you might know, is a natural disease that affect deer herd. It's caused by mites that infect the deer. Most survive it, but the entire state has been affected. A lot of hunters are worried due to the number of deer being found dead. I've only found one on the farm, but a neighbor had 14. It should get better after the first frost, or so I'm told. Anyhow, probably going to get back out this weekend and see what kind of activity we've got. Might actually fill a doe tag if an opportunity presents itself. I haven't shot too much lately, work has kept me busy. October is almost here and most of us are in the woods, so it should get interesting pretty soon. Keep in touch.

Just a quick update from me guys. My car is packed and I am wrapping my day up at work and will be picking my hunting partner up here in a few minutes for the 4 hour treck to my camp. We will be in stands tomorrow morning. I now have internet access from camp, so I'll post up with any results if I happen to tag one. Wish me luck!!

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Good luck to you Matt!!
No luck for me the last couple days. Saw deer, but not close enough for any shots. Last night after leaving my blind (it had been raining and I saw nothing all evening) I walk 10 yards around a bend and 25 yards away is a yearling doe. Looking at me but not able to make out what I was. She starts walking towards me, stops, a few more steps, stops. I decide, I wonder..........As she faces me and walks a few more steps, I'm able to put my release back on AND nock an arrow. She gets within 15 yards of me. Then just trots off without blowing or seeming upset. It was a good 15 minutes after legal light. I wanted to see if I could just do what I did. It can be pretty cool the encounters you can have with deer without taking any shots. |

How's everyone doing? Today our season opened but unfortunately work had me tied up and I didn't get out this evening. My daughter has a soccer game tomorrow evening so hopefully Wednesday evening I will get out. My brother-in-law is coming up Friday afternoon to hunt and do some videotaping for the entire weekend.
Should be fun....Good luck to you all! |

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Well guys, I'm out for awhile. Was in Ohio for a hunt from Tues-today. On Thurs after the AM hunt I was in the yard and the outfitter/guides 2 dogs were rough housing and barreled into me and knocked my left knee out of joint. Went to the ER. Was put into an immobilizer. Drove home yesterday. What a bummer. What are the odds!!! Wear a safety harness every time I get into a tree but don't think about what can happen on the ground. It was so hot(90's) only saw does, a spike, a small 6 pointer and a decent buck moving up the river bank 50 yards behind me. EHD being see around the area there.
I just happened to put a new blind out in one of my favorite spots on a plot just last week. Guess I'll spend a bit of time there and another blind that's been out since spring turkey season. Until I can climb a tree again. |
RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Sorry guys for not posting much, been busy with work and in the CB forum. I was able to take a Deer Friday. I have been putting alot of effort into getting a cam set up for filming and in all the excitement of doing the cam thing and in the low light I shot a button buck. Seen deer in the last fifteen minuets of light and in a dark swamp so I just seen no horns and took the shot. Still pleased with it, I just know there is some who will not be, sorry. Anyways here is some video and pics. The video is kinda hard to see. Two mistakes made in the excitement. One was I had zoom all the way in and the focus picks up the CB limbs and the B-Head, deer is kinda out of focus. Second mistake was Sony has a great low light setting, works best when turned on! LOL!! I was able to use some soft wear for editing to lighten it up, but still kinda hard to see. The deer before the shot is perfectly in the middle of screen. He in on the far side of water just under the leaves on that tree with its head down getting drink, slightly quartering away with his entire body on the slope of the bank of the waters edge. The most I can see of him in the film is the white of the inside of his leg and chest. Hope that helps some who can't see before the shot. It was about a fifteen to twenty yard shot. I used a 100 grain Tekan II expandable and the pic shows the entrance wound, fully open as it went in! Enjoy the Video and pics, good luck to all!

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Sorry for being absent for so long guys. I've been busy working and hunting in the evenings. I've had deer around me most of the evenings and had several shot opportunitys on some nice does. I only drew back on one (Thurs night) and my G5 peep twisted! I couldn't see anything so I had to let the string down. It's been extremely warm here, so I didn't even go out last night (saw nothing in the AM, heard some turkeys, however). Hopefully this week brings a much needed temperature change.

RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
HOT! HOT!! HOT!!!
That's pretty much the summary for the last three days here - 83 Fri, 85 Yesterday, and today a whopping 88. Deer haven't been moving much. Needless to say, my brother-in-law came up north (to our house) this weekend to hunt. We saw 3 small bucks right at daylight. They were eating acorns for about a 30 mins right below us. Then about 10am, we saw two does about 60 yards away. Then yesterday evening we made a bad choice on which stand to hunt (not because of the wind but food source) and didn't see anything. This morning, we had 3 does come in just after daylight. They avoided all of our shooting lanes. Then about 40 mins later another doe crossed the creek and came straight thru our lane. My brother-in-law made a perfect shot. The video is pretty good and I did manage to get zoomed in really well just before the shot. GREAT impact footage. That was about 8:15 this morning. We hunted til 10:15 and didn't see anything else. We brought her back, skinned her out, and immediately de-boned the meat and stuck everything in the cooler. Tomorrow is a holiday for me so I plan on hunting a stand that I haven't even went near since I put it up about a month ago. It's perfect for a Southwest wind and that is what the forecast is calling for tomorrow. |
RE: 18 -Official Team Rack-a-Maniacs Thread
Well, it looks as though all of us have been busy. I've been traveling the last few weeks and had very little time to post. Hope all is well with everyone. It's been extremely warm here, record highs for the past week. I haven't even thought about getting in a stand. Heading out to Kansas in 16 days and it can't get here fast enough.
Keep at it and check in when you can. Kelly |
