I'm really sorry about that B.H.D. I know you're hating it more then you can say. We've all done it before also. Hope you find that rack. Was it the one you've been watching?

ORIGINAL: Bird Hunt Dog I screwed up guys:(I made the #1 recovery mistake in the book. I shot a nice one last Sunday night. I was sure I double lunged him and heard him go down. I got out of my stand to soon and must of bumped him because I can't find him anywhere. I'm just sick about this I must have searched for 30+ hours by now. I know he's dead and I won't quit till I find him!! Hang in there man...........you'll find him. |

ORIGINAL: Bird Hunt Dog:...... I'm just sick about this I must have searched for 30+ hours by now. I know he's dead and I won't quit till I find him!! My buddy shot his biggest buck ever in the paunch two years ago. I was there with him when he shot it in very low light (legal, but cloudy). We searched that entire Saturday, the next day on Sunday and then he found it after a morning of searching on Monday. On Saturday, before it rained, we were on our hands and knees in a maple swamp following overturned leaves and specks of blood so small you practically needed a microscope to see. The meat was N.G. but as a six pointer it scored 135 Typical. Keep after him man! |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Thanks for the support guys,
An friend of mine is a pilot and where going to fly my area this week hopefully. The only thing I can think of is that he got into the river and floated away. The river is really moving right now. My wife was with me on this hunt and she was also sure I double lunged this deer. She thought I hit him perfect as did I. I had no pass through though! I can't figure it out. I'll never make the mistakes I made on this deer again. I can guarantee that:( |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Well today was opening day for me, with all of the rain we've had up here and the winds howling yesterday i thought for sure that this morning there'd be some serious activity.
I hunted out behind my uncle's field and the morning was just perfect. I was wide awake the whole time, comfortable, warm but not hot, just enough leaves left on the trees for cover.....but no deer. I did see a flock of turkeys come through around 8:30. Two nice gobblers prolly two years old with four or five hens came within 10 yards of my stand. The gobblers gave me an eyeball or two and they all went about their way. I'm afraid someone up there knows I'm going to Illinois in November and wants me to save my first buck for the trip. I wouldn't mind shooting a doe or two though! |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Howdy, everyone! I haven't got a shot yet, but I did get more pictures of the 8-point I'm hoping to shoot! Thought I'd post it for y'all to see! Something is wrong with his right front hoof, what do y'all think? Hope we get one on the board soon! God bless.

RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Looks like he might have broken it somehow and it healed funny. He should be easier to catch up with this way;)
Good luck! |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Notice how thin he looks? he's got a mature looking head and a nice rack, but he looks awfully thin to me, although it could be that his front shoulder has broken down due to disuse.
Put that buck out of his misery and put us on the board Goose! I'm guessing he'd tape out around 118. Anyone else? |

RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Hey fellas. Just wanted to check in. Good luck BHD on finding that buck. Trembow, go get that big boy! I haven't seen any big ones yet, but in one spot there is a buck that is rubbing and scraping up the area around my stand and he's rubbing trees about 6 inches around, so I'm hoping to catch up with him. I know there is a big one running around by the river, but that's flooded right now. There's also another good one on a local private tract of land so now I just gotta put one in front of me.
Good luck everyone. |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Hey Goose,
Now if you shoot him, you can tell everyone that you shot BIG FOOT! ![]() |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
:D Yea, IF I shoot him! Man I'm so ready to pull that trigger! It is kinda hard to let these does keep on walking! I just always think that buck may be behind them! Our bucks are in their "bachelor" groups still. Our rut doesn't start till January usually. There are tons of acorns on the ground and I'm in the woods, but those bucks have been nocturnal since I've even known they were there. All summer they only walked at night. Hopefully the cool air we are suposed to get will get them up in the day light! Good luck to all of you!

RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Hey Trae, you're in Florida aren't you? I hope that hurricane misses you by miles, but if it doesn't, maybe it'll blow the bucks out of the woods for ya?
Now that would be making lemonade when life hands you lemons! |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
I grew up in Florida, small town in North Central Florida, "Mayo" #1 for Dairy Farms in the Southeast U.S.!!! [8D]:) And pretty good football teams also! I live in Auburn, Alabama now. But we all should keep those folks down there in our prayers, and thank you for the thought! My family is in Jacksonville, so they are well north of the storm.
I'm getting back in the woods tomorrow!! I bought a new broadhead, the "Viper Venom" by Spin Tite. My brother has been useing them for 2 years now and I've seen some unbelieveable holes!! Great blood trails too. It's hard to only take one Muzzy to the stand, but I'm going with two Vipers and one Muzzy! Guys, we got to get on the board!!! :D Trae |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Well nothing again this morning. The moon was still up at sunrise, the wind was light but generally south and I have bedding areas East and West of my stand. The clover in the field I'm behind is getting MOWED by the deer at night but mostly in a corner on the other end. I might have to try a stand over there next week.
Beautiful morning to be in the woods though, (partly cloudy and 42 degrees). I just wish there was a little more excitement than red squirrels barking at me! |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
I hunted hard all day yesterday, only saw a couple of does and yearlings, and a spike! I skipped this mornings hunt, but am going back this afternoon. Where's everyone else? We haven't heard form a bunch of the guys in a while! Come on back! Let's get eachother pumped up and, GET ON THAT BOARD!!! :D

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() mmmmmmmmmMMMMMOTOWNHONKEY!!! Okay, you said, "He's a big one." don't you be setting me up for a pair of big blue one's here![:@] I'm heading back to Uncle Eddie's field in the AM. My dilemma there is that half the reason I'm hunting there is to thin the herd so they don't eat him out of house and home. If a small buck shows up and presents a shot, I don't know if I could look him in the eye if I pass it up. |

|
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Hunted from 7:30 to 11 this AM. Around 9:30 I heard a buck grunting LOUD on the other side of the field. I saw nothing but squirrels.
On my way out I checked out the other uncle's field accross the road, the deer were clearly in the turnips and by the looks of things not long before I got there. I need to get myself a ladder stand as there aren't any trees for hanging a stand in or using a climber in on that side. |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
The pics are on the bowhunting forum for those of you who haven't seen it. He scored 156 and 3/8. Good luck to you guys on your hunts.

RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
O.k. what should I do? This buck is obviously there in the dark, but I haven't seen him in the light yet. Not even a picture in the light. So is my best bet in the A.M. or P.M.? Should I do anything special? I've thought of having someone walk through the bedding area, but that's kinda a last resort to jump him. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!
Trae |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
You need to get as close to his bedding area as possible without bumping him. Find out where he is entering and leaving the feeding areas. and follow them back to his bedding area. The buck probably has a staging area where he hangs up until dark. Make sure you have a couple different stand locations for wind direction. With the rut approaching he is bound to get on his feet during the day.

RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Great advice Browning 1, thanks and I'll let y'all know how it works out! I've actually donethis before and was successful in getting my brother a nice buck, so mabey I should have remembered that, it's hard to do that some times, actually apply what we have learned in the past! Oh, well!

RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread

RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Boy did I have a fun afternoon yesterday!
Sitting in my stand just enjoying nature and in anticipation for the future possibilities. From behind me steps out this buck........Enough to get the heart pumping but not quite a shooter( Around a 115-120" nine point) I let him walk by at 10 yards and couldn't help to smile......A couple of years ago I would never have let that buck walk;). As he walked away I had to grunt at him just to see what he would do...........He just looked back then sniffed a licking branch, urinated on his tarsal glands and slowly walked away! Around 20 minutes later I hear something behind me walking through the river.......I slowly turn to look..... A shooter for me is a buck that instantly when you see it you go "WOW nice buck" to yourself! He was probably a good 130 class eight. Long G1's,G2's and G3's around 17-18 wide, and decent mass! So he crosses the river and stops on the other side. There was a good shooting lane where he stopped but I didn't expect to shoot that way so I never ranged it previously. I said well hes got to be 35 yards. I didn't want to risk it so I pulled out the range finder and he was standing at 34 yards eating some foliage. So I draw back and am just getting the pin settled on his chest when he takes astep to me. Now theres no good shot so I just held it and was hoping another lane would open up, but one never did so I let down. As he walked away I grunted at him. He turned and looked, instantly his hair stood up on his back and he walked away bull legged and grunted three or four times back at me. As he disappeared in the trees I took out the rattling antlers and worked them some...........That got him going but he wouldn't come back. He stood in the woods grunting and beating on some trees. What and awesome night in the deer woods:D |
RE: Official Team Pass-Through (22) Thread
Great hunt... BHD!
I will be heading to the big woods of Northern Wisconsin this Saturday for a 4 day bowhunt. The bucks are heavy into Pre-rut but the big boys are still laying low...hopefully I hit it just right...the big boysshould be on there feet in the next week. A lot of young bucks running unreceptive does around here. LOTS of deer vs.Car collisions right now....ALways the telltale sign the rut is approaching. Can't wait until Saturday!!! Good Luck to team double deuce! |
