RE: Official Team Fear This (24) Thread
We sure have gotten quiet. I have not gotten out yet because it has been to warm. Waiting for some bugs to get killed off first. I am planning on going out the first or second weekend of October. Has anyone on our team started yet? Already have 3 bucks entered this year and I think last year it was mid October before we even had one. Sure hope the season goes like that for everyone.

RE: Official Team Fear This (24) Thread
I was thinking the same things. I am anxiously awaiting the season opener here Oct 1st.
I've worked out a deal with one of the farmers whose field I hunt where he will leave me a couple rows of standing corn leading to about 10x10rows of standing corn from which I'll hollow out the center, trim shooting lanes, and set a ground blind in. Can't wait!!! The farmers have been cutting corn here for almost 2 weeks now so most of it should be gone by opening weekend. |
RE: Official Team Fear This (24) Thread
I was sitting in a tree from about 3:00 until dark today. Saw 4 deer, no headgear. I saw a doe feeding along the edge of a cornfield on the opposite side of a fenced area so I gave her a couple grunts to try and get her coming my way. What I didn't see was a bigger doe MUCH closer to me than the one I was watching. I had the wind, but she busted me, I think... Almost immediately after the two took off, a turkey, very close to where that larger doe was started vocalizing...Alot. It almost sounded like an alarm putt, but I could hear some purrs mixed in. I think it was an assembly call, because through the trees I was watching about 10 -15 birds feeding thru a field about 60 yards in front of my stand.Well, off to my left at about 50 yards was a break through the strip of woods I was in between that field and a logging road. I counted 21 turkeys coming off the field, thru the break, then behind me on the logging road. Just my luck, they all started milling about right behind me. What got real interesting was now its fly up time... All of these 21 plus birds flew up to roost ALL AROUND MY TREE! Man, they make a racket when they first get up there. They were flapping wings, moving slightly to different trees, etc. I had several within 10 yards, about 10 feet higher than my stand. I thought one might share my tree with me, I was glad to be wearing a hat :D Oh well, no shots but definitely an interesting hunt. I'm gonna head out again Saturday.

Wow how exciting that must have been. I've yet to see a single turkey while in stand. I'll bet watching them roost all around you was amazing. Soooooo you gonna get a turkey tag? LOL

RE: Official Team Fear This (24) Thread
Sounds awesome. I have had turkeys around before but never roosting in the trees that close. Best would have been a couple of years ago when I had 2 roost about 50 yards away. Sure did scare them when I left that night. I do have a tag so I am hoping I will get some to come around me again this year. Our turkey season opens on Oct. 1st. Probably won't even get into the woods before that anyway.

Just wanted to share my 2 favorite stand in PA for the opener.
My morning stand for opening day: Red spot is stand site Pink line is the main trail/rub line going into bedding blue is a stream brown is bedding cover and covered with rubs green is oak trees, and feeding ![]() My evening stand for opening day: Green is feeding area, all beautiful clover/alfalfa blue is a stream they have to cross every day Pink is a rub line/stream crossing Brown is bedding cover Red spot is my stand which has a fresh rub the size of my calf directly below it :D The white is the wind direction in the evenings. We have spot lighted deer in this field just after dark that were well over 100" on a consistent basis, and they all have to cross that stream in the same spot. ![]() I also last weekend went to scout a 110 acre parcel of land I have been lucky to secure permission on near Oneonta, NY. There are only 2 other bowhunters there, and it is not hunted much. They did kill a P&Y buck there a few years ago and have not harvested much else (except does)there for several years because of QDMA. I already located an active scrape there as well last weekend and they have 3x biologic full draw plots on it with over 10 stands. Should be a good place and I can't wait to hunt there. I guess I may be splitting my week from 11/5 to 11/12 between NY and PA now, and every weekend from 10/1 to 11/12 between NY, PA, and VT. Can't wait!! Should be my best year yet! |
RE: Official Team Fear This (24) Thread
It really has gotten quiet around here....but here's alittle update from my stand point....
Been shooting quite often and have most all of my hunting stuff ready...plan on setting some stands this weekend and checking the new trail camera setups. The past couple weeks the three trail camera's have picked up a lot of Does and nothing else but a familar spike who finds his way to two of the camera's often for pic's. Only got two pic's of what looks to be a nice buck, but the pic's are kinda far back and just after dark. I have tried to clear them up and zoom in but can't get the pic's clear enough to tell anything. Hopefully the new locations will get some better pic's, with some bucks and give me a idea of where to hang my extra stand. Our season doesn't start here until Oct 15, so I still have some time to wait...but the days are counting down. I can't wait that's for sure....hopefully the cooler weather that is moving in, and the opening day of squirrel season(Oct 8) will hold me over nad get me pumped for opening day. I know the cooler weather will definetly get the hunting vibe out, and it's about time. Summer seemed to drag on, and was as hot as ever. |
RE: Official Team Fear This (24) Thread
I've been out a couple of times since my last post, nothing much to report. Saturday I was very ticked at myself, missed TWO count em, TWO shots at does. Clean misses at targets I would normally hit 10 out of 10 times. Glad I didn't injure them, but at least I know my bow's quiet, lol. When they just keep feeding like nothing happened, you know your set-up is quiet. Went to the range first thing Sunday morning, figuring I knocked my sights offor something, but put 6 out of 6 in the bullseye at 20, and 5 out of 6 in the bullseye at 30. Went to an elevated stand with broadheads and I was right on at 30. People must have thought I was nuts when I probably seemed upset at shooting good...
Tonight was a little different. I've patterned the deer on the edge of this cornfield and had them coming to the same spot the last 2 times out. Today, I went there (1.5 hr drive) and the corn had just been cut. That changed their patterns. Just walking to my stand site I kicked up 3 or 4 deer, couldn't tell if any were bucks, but I doubt it since they were bedding together. Just before dark,a different groupcame out about where I expected them to, but instead of feeding along the fence near the edge of the corn like they have been doing, they fed along the treeline into the cut field. I saw one big bodied buck tonight, but didnt get a clear view of his headgear. They didn't get close enough to offer a shot tonight... oh well. Opening day in RI is this Saturday, so I'll let my CT spot cool off for a while and check out something a little closer to home. Found a nice trail and a pretty twisted up shreaded sapling on a piece of land I just got permission to hunt, hopefully I'll see the bad boy that's doing the rubbing :) |
RE: Official Team Fear This (24) Thread
Well looks like I should be able to get out some this weekend. Not sure how much but something is better then nothing. Weather has been warm but it is cooling off now. I haven't been out there since Labor Day weekend to even check the trail camera. Sure hope I got some good pictures on that too. I will post next week and let you all know how I did. We sure do need to get some talking going on here. At least we are not as quiet as my sons team. He is on team 14. Nobody on that team is talking.
RI - Did you ever figure out what happened with the two shots? Just a brain fart? Been there before. |
RE: Official Team Fear This (24) Thread
What's up team? Any Action? I got out for the RI opener yesterday, saw 4 deer. 2 does, one spike and one fork horn. The big doe knew something was wrong, did a little foot stomping and blew once, ran away twicebut I grunted them back in both times. If I had a shot at the doe I would have taken her, but the only shot I had was at the spike. I was thinkin about the team and not wanting to waste my only shot at some horns in RI so I let him walk. I didn't get out today, but I may go check that spot out one afternoonduring theweek.
