Congrats guys--this past weekend I lost a deer to a pack of coyotes--but the rut is still on, and I'm hoping that this weekend will finally be the one.

The first picture in my original post after shooting the above buck was resized by a friend via e-mail in order to make the file size smaller and I thought to myself, I need to figure out how to do that myself. So I was forced to after Thursday night when I shot my second buck of the year. I guess I'll start by telling the story of the first buck. I took Nov. 7 thru Nov. 11 off work to hunt. The weather started out bad as it was unseasonably warm and very windy. Not seeing any rutting activity I decided to shoot a doe Wednesday afternoon. The temps came down a little toward the end of the week and activity picked up. Saw a mature 10 point Friday evening chasing does but no shot. I went out Sunday afternoon and figured it would be my last chance during the rut. I decided to try a new trick I had read about by using the tarsal glands from the doe I had shot earlier. I set them about 15 yards downwind. About an hour before dark the buck in the picture above came up from the down wind side of me with his nose in the air. He appeared to be searching for the doe that belonged to those tarsal glands. When he made it to 15 yards I shot. I heard him go down not far away. I saved the glands in the freezer for gun season. Well I'm happy to say that I won't be gun hunting this weekend in IL. because of what happened yesterday afternoon. I managed to get the afternoon off to get one last chance at a mature buck before the slugs started flying Friday morning. At 3pm I spotted movement and was excited to see what appeared to be a big set of antlers. As I watched him moving through the woods he stopped and began working on a tree with his antlers. The top of this tree was about 20 feet and jerkingback and forth violently as the buck worked it over. He appeared to move away from me so settled down and hoped I'd see some more action. A couple minutes later the buck was coming back towards me chasing a doe. She stopped at about 75 yards and began feeding on acorns. He began to work on another tree and then began feeding also. Again they moved directly away from me and after losing sight of them for a couple minutes here they came back my direction. This time she started walking towards me and feeding, he was right behind her.She walked almost directly under me and I was worried that I wasn't going to get a good broadside shot at him. But for some reason at 15 yards he turned broadside as if something else got his attention. It was those same tarsal glands. I had tossed them out in front of my stand before I went up the tree. I grunted to stop him, pulled the trigger slowly, and watched as the arrow went through both lungs and I knew right away he was done. What an awesome feeling and I give all the credit to God for the success I've had in the past 8 days. He has an interesting rack with five on one side and three on the other. That brow tine is not broke, it just never grew. We estimated him to be 165 lbs. field dressed. I wishhe could have went towards our score but hey, I'm not complaining. He's my second biggest deer and will look great on the wall.

Here's the measurements on my second buck. He has good width, but not alot of mass as you can see by the H1 measurements. I would say he was 3 1/2 years old and we estimated his field dressed weight to be around 165# ( I need to by a scale so I don't have to guess ). His Popeand Young score takes a big hit due to the side to side difference, but that just means he has alot of character.

Inside spread: 18 0/8''

Right side:
Main beam- 21''
G1-2 5/8''
G2-6 7/8
G3-8 2/8
H1-3 7/8
H2-3 3/8
H3-3 2/8
Abnormal-4 7/8

Left side:
Main beam- 21''
G1-0 0/8
G2-8 4/8
G3-6 3/8
H1-3 5/8
H2-3 3/8
H3-3 2/8

Total: 118 2/8

Pope and Young: 102 1/8
