RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
Things are starting to heat up here boys. Had two big boys within 30 yards last night but they never came into an opening. I see some Elite 8 bucks on the board by the end of next week, we are to good to get shut out this long. One thing is for sure we have some catching up to do to get back into this thing, its gonna take another team effort with 6-8 of us getting bucks.

ORIGINAL: Lefty26 One thing is for sure we have some catching up to do to get back into this thing, its gonna take another team effort with 6-8 of us getting bucks. I'll be in the woods here in Michigan most weekend long - hopefully will be able to get us on the board. Let's get em! |
RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
Need your help on this one fellas. I shot abucktonight but couldn't find him. He wasn't huge, bigger than last year's buck, but probably wouldn't score over a 100. I decided to take him anyway based on my limited time available this season to be in the woods. It was a 15 yard shot, left side facing me quartering away. Since I'm 22' up and considering the close range, I decided to go a little high to assure hitting both lungs. The arrow hit where I was aiming - behind the shoulder about and below the spine a half foot. I assume the arrow lodged in the right shoulder or leg seeing as I never found the arrow. He was bleeding from his right side so the arrow had to have penetrated through but wasn't a complete pass through seeing as I never found the arrow. Blood wasn't picked up until 40 yards. Once I had blood, there was a steady trail of bright red blood for another 80 or so yards.I was shocked it hadn't dropped by this point. After another 20 yards of very spotty blood, I lost the trail. I'll return tomorrow morning to do a grid search at last blood. Hopefully the yotes won't have their way with him. I realize it's impossible to help me over the internet, but what's your opinion on this shot? You think I onlyhit one lung some how? How high would a shot have to be in order not to hit the lung on the facing side? I am truly baffled on this one.
|
RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
Bob if the shot was placed the way that you say I don't see how that you could've kept from hitting both lungs. Keep on him I'm sure that he's dead. I just came back from my firstof 2 weeks off with nothing, not even a doe. But there's always next week.
|
RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
You'd have to hit the spine or above the spine to NOT hit the lung on the facing side.. They go all the way to the top of the chest cavity

RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
I looked last night for 4 hours and this morning for another 5. Sorry to say, he wasn't found. I believe the thing to possibly even be alive. I found the arrow this morning 40 yards from where I shot him. The arrow had bits of meat on it and was drenched in bright red blood indicative of a muscle hit. My guess is I hit this deer higher than I thought - through the back strap but narrowly missing the spine and took no lung some how. The last blood was a big coagulated glob - no blood after that. That was at only 150-200 yards from where he was shot so my guess is that I didn't hit a major artery and the wound closed back up. I really don't believe in that so called "hollow spot", but geesh, how could I not have hit at least one lung at that angle? Sorry fellers, I suck I guess. He was a nice buck too, big bodied boy with neck all swollen. He came in sniffing the estrus doe pee I had dragged in. That stuff works good. Now if I could only learn how to shoot them.:(
Last year my buddy shot a buck and hit very high - same area I hit this one. It was a broadside shot so he got a pass through. The arrow looked much the same as mine - scraps of muscle drenched in bright red blood, no bubbles. We never found that deer as the blood trail ran dry. My buddy described this deer as a small fork with a limp on the front right. A week later from the same stand I saw his little buck - alive and well. I could see a black circle where the arrow entered directly behind the shoulder and just below the spine. He was shot from a stand so the angle would have to have hit the opposite side lung, but apparently didn't. Go figure. Maybe there's something to this legendary hollow zone. |
RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
YEah,, must have hit over the spine..
My buddie hit one just like that, then I missed it two weeks later. Then my uncle shot it rifle season with a hole through from my buddy.. Better luck next time |

RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
So how about it fellas? Any big plans for the weekend? It's supposed to rain here, but I'm going to be in the woods as much as the weather allows me to be. A good leaf soaking would be good for an afternoon stalk.
I tried to get us on the board but like an idiot blew the shot. I'll give my best this weekend. What's up with the rest of you? Anyone heard from Cougar Mag? |
RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
I'll be out everyday.. I have three stands set for the Rut.. Hoping one of them pays off..

RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread

RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
Well I almost had one down saturday morning? Had about a 100 class 8 pt
come down the trail about 5 min after getting into the stand. He came in walking right behind me going to my right It was stillnot good light yet but I could see fine. He was out about 25 yrds when I drew I made a grunting noise with my voice to stop him. Well he stoped alright. Right behind some small brush[:'(]I could tell if I was to releasemyarrow I would hit everything but the deer? So I had to hold at full fraw untill he started walking again but as luck would have it there was no other opening`s as he walk on so I let down hoping something else would show up butnothing ever did other than one doe. But? I have seen much larger bucks around the area I am hunting than this one I saw sat. I am taking off work thur-fri along with sat-sunday to hunt. So with any luck maby something bigger will show up;)I know we are getting off to a slow start but it would but real cool to come back and win this thing after giving a few team a head start:DGood luck team.. |

RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
Slow start is right but the hunting is really just getting started. I've been busy with biz but hope to get out shortly. Already my friends have dropped some big 8 pointers. One of my friends had real nice one underneath him today but passed on him. He said he was saving it for me. This is already shapping up better then last year. It was later in the season when we started to see real nice deer.
Good luck, it's time to get serious. |
RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread

ORIGINAL: Antler Eater You guys better start slinging some arrows because I can hear the fat lady clearing her throat...;):D Should be a good weekend. In my opinion and in my area, this weekend is the best weekend to be hunting all season - I'll be out there as much as possible on Saturday. Not sure about Sunday as it's supposed to rain all day starting Sat night. [:@] |
RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
Well fellas, I got us on the board. Bigger than last year's deer, but no big
deer. I decided to take him this morning based on fear of not having much time in the woods coming up as I will be traveling for business the rest of November and most of December. It's tough to count on a monster buck or any buck for that matter in late December. So, check out the score board, not big, but we're in. The hunt itself was really sweet. A typical 40 degree November MI day in the hardwoods. At 8:45 here comes a deer. At the time I had just dropped my call, which landed on a branch at the base of my stand. I was bending over to pick it up when I heard him walking in. I'm thinking I'm busted for sure. I managed to get my call put away just in time to get my bow in position. As he milled around in range quartering away in a shooting lane, I sunk an arrow through both lungs and split open the top of the heart. He went 50 yards and piled up. Nothing better than seeing you deer drop and die in site. Oh yeah, one more thing better than that I suppose - he oddly ran toward the truck.:D He was hanging in my garage by 9:30. |
RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
Alright Badbob. I went out this morning and had to put chains on due to the ice. Got to my stand and wiped or tried to wipe off the frozen snow and ice and Saw 3 does from the stand and a nice one that I kicked up in going back to the truck. After I left there I chequed out this meadow and encounter a herd of mulies with a small 3 pointer in the group. As I slipped on out I saw a nice bull moose. This evening I went to a ranchers property and hunted elk, but I was like a day behind them. The signs are real good and I'm seeing an increase of activity. Its starting to get very good as the rut is coming in and this is what I'll be doing for the next 2 weeks.
Congradulations. Bobby |
RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
Way to go Badshotbob. Fellas, I had a 140 class 12 pointer coming in behind me Saturday morning. He was working his rubline and staying in the thickest cover in the woods presenting no shot opportunity, moving slow and looking for does. But instead of following the trail 15 yards to the left of me, he veers off north out of range continuing to stay in the thickest cover. My heart sank to say the least as what looked to be a sure thing suddenly turned into a somber mood turning experience. I am sure he will be back, but hopefully he appears again before the upcoming firearm season.

RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
WTG Bob and RTA, I scored also on Saturday on a nice 101 4/8 inch 7 point, I'll get the pics as soon as my wife gets to work tomorrow. Man thedeer were moving good that morning. I actually missed two good 8's in the morning before I arrowed this on. On the first one I just never settled in good and the second one I under estimated the yardage. But that afternoon thenothing came by until 5:15 I heard a deer break over the ridgeabove me and I could tell that he was moving my way in a hurr. I gotmy bow out of the holder and when I looked up I could see he trooting down the hill right at meso I came to full draw and just waited for him to turn broadside. Well at 8 yards he turned and opened up his front shoulder and I touched the trigger. The arrow entered just above thefront shoulder and exited at the next to last rib on the opposite side. He ran about 20 yards and stopped all humped up. After a few seconds hestarted the death run down hill and piled up in about 30 yards. Things are looking good for us now. Again congrats Bob and RTA

RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
Nice pile of deer you have there RTA! :D
That's a dandy buck. I'd take a buck like that every time. I thought I was going to be able to score a double the other day as well but it didn't work out. Minutes after I watched my buck fall, two doe came wandering in from behind me moving through 60 yards out. I thought, hey, why not, if given the chance. They had two choice for trails to take - one in front of my tree at a nice 15 yards, or one that leads in the opposite direction. Of course they chose the right one (for them anyway). :D Congrats again, nice deer! |
RE: Official Team Elite (8) Thread
