What's wrong with the 270 at distances? You can pretty much hunt anything in the lower 48 with it. Now if you just want more pop the 06, 7mm magnum, 300 winmag are all good choices. For a cross-over deer/varmint gun the 243 or 25-06 are great choices. The 25-06's advantage over the 243 is the 120 gr bullet.
