I know a number of people use that .338 you mentioned for Elk, too.
I'd recommend taking a close look at Tikka T3 .300 WM. I've shot several Elk with mine. The most recent wasa big cow at 300 yards 2 weeks ago in WY that took 1 180 gr Accubond slug through the shoulder/lungs to bring down after she moved just 50 yards.
I was very please with this rifle and the accuracy with a good scope on solid rings that come with the rifle. Using steady sticks and a careful shot put the slug right in where it needed to go. And at just under 7 lbs the rifle won't making your arms and shoulder worn out from carrying it around all day either.
