If I were not buying a VX-II or better, I would buy another scope that was in the same price range as the VX-I but had fully multicoated lenses.
I like the VX-II's and higher, also. But for the VX-I and Rifleman, you can get better scopes for the same price. You are just paying for the Leupold name.

I think its the same for the VX-2s and count for this up also. The VX 3's cost a ton, some are good bit more then even the Zeiss Conquests in the same approx powers and the Zeiss blow the Leupolds away.

Like you said you are just paying for the name.
