Set it up looking up/down the trail, they trigger a little slow. Cold usually drains batteries faster, in summer I got around 3 weeks out of mine. The snow shouldn't hurt the camera itself. Also set it up pretty close to where you expect the critter to be, the flash ain't so powerful.
