I think the acoustic a good place to start... but it depends on what kind of music you want to play. As far as the manufacturer goes, it's pretty good advice to go and play a few guitars... if you know a few people with guitars the ask to play theirs... The more guitars you can get your hands on the better. I have a few guitars but each has its own function so to speak. Here is my little collection:
