RE: Bullet weight for Elk
Ain't nuthin' wrong with a 270, loaded with the proper bullets. Them Failsafes an' Bearclaws are bout the onliest reason you git away with the 140 grainer. That, an' maybeso you can shoot a lil'. You gotta realize thet most fellers comin' out to hunt elk onct a year never practice shootin', an' when they do shoot their rifles, its off a bench. Tellin' 'em to "place their shot" is ridiculous cause they're usually breathin' that they couldn't hit a movin' targit if they were usin' a bench. Then, there's the magnum factor. Mos' fellers what use 'em cain't shoot 'em. What I tell fellers on these boards is use a cartridge of moderation ('06 class), with a big, heavy bullet. My personal favorite cartridge fer elk is the 338'06, but my 30'06 does good enuff with 180s an' I ain't got the money to buy everthin' thet comes along. Mags ain't needed, skills are. Not jus' shootin' but stalkin' too. If fellers did as much shootin' an' learnin' how to stalk, they wouldn't feel like they need any 500 yard cannon to kill elk. "Placin' shots" ain't what mos' fellers git a chance at mos' the time. Git good with yer rifle from real huntin' positions an' aim fer the shoulders. Use a bullet thet will punch right thru bustin up his wheels as it goes. Ain't no more to be said.
