RE: Bullet weight for Elk
Go with 160 gr premium (TBBC, Barnes X, Swift A-Frame, Nosler Partition) bullets in the .280 or 180gr premiums in the .30-06. Both will do the job just fine, if you do your part. You might even consider a Swift A-Frame or TBBC 175gr bullet in the .280, although it is heavier than necesary. It hits with far more energy than a 180gr bullet from an '06, and shoots flatter, and these bullets in this weight will absolutely hammer elk at all reasonable ranges.
