Penetration is the issue with most airgun needs. A .177 would probably penetrate more because of the smaller size, but then it can zip through a bird wounding or just making it die later. A .22 going within a couple hundred fps of a .177 and the same make of pellet will drop birds better, but it probably won't be noticed.
