The extension service didsome studiesin my neck of the woods on coyotes. Their study indicated a person would have to kill 75% ofthe population for several consecutive years to effectivelycontrol the population. Anything less than 75%, and the survivors were able to make up the difference through increased litter size and higher survival rates from the decrease in competition.
