LBR-the track you describe is indeed a good one but not unusual where I live in no. MN,however the rule is with mammals, the farther north of the equator you get the bigger the mammals get ie.the shiras moose found in the western US-Canadian moose found in Minn. and Canada,the yukon moose found in no. Canada and the alaskan moose,some people argue that the Yukon and Alaskan are the same but the Alaskan (found further north) is larger.
