Default RE: how many pins?

It depends on your "maximum effective range" for bowhunting. If you're not going to be taking shots beyond 30 yards, why have more pins in there to distract you? I use 3 for hunting, 20, 30 and 40. Even though my maximum effective range (where I can keep 100% of my broadheads in an 8" circle) is 60 yards, I have made a conscientious choice not to ever take a shot more than 40 yards, and only then if conditions are absolutely perfect (broadside, unaware animal with clear open cover and no wind).

For 3-D shooting you're into a totally different scenario if you're going to be competetive. I've been at tournaments with shots at a Sasquatch at 80 yards, the extra pins definitely come in handy then.
