That sounds about right for top of the line, maybe a bit more after it's set up. You could spend 600 easy on a bare bow. Then you need sights, rest, release, stabilizer, arrows and a target. Each could cost another hundred dollars if you wanted to spend that much.

You don't have to spend that much though. I have seen plenty of really nice bows in the 3 to 4 hundred dollar range. Look at diamond and reflex. They are made by bowtech and Hoyt respectively. Parker does have some nice packages as well as darton and hoyt. Heck my bowtech Mighty Might was only like 560 bucks bare. My darton was only 350 bare, That was in 2000 though. You don't have to spend 800 bucks on bow to get a good one. Of course by the time you walk out of the store it might cost that much.
