If you want a bullet that will drive tacks and retain weight give the Hornady SST a try. I have been shooting the SST 150grn in my 30.06 around 2900fps for several years now with excellent results on deer from close range out to 300yds. Two of my best friends shoot them also with the same results,one in his 300 mag and the other in his .270 I've never shot an elk with one but i would have complete confidence with this bullet if i ever go elk hunting.
