RE: 8mm mauser
I don't know where you are looking for load info, but there is a TON of info for the 8mm Mauser out there. I am currently loading a 150 grain Hornady for mine. If I were loading for elk (and I wouldn't hesitate to, but I have a .30-06 and a .50 caliber muzzle loader), I would use the 200 grain NP. With a 150 grain bullet in agood action, such as the VZ24, and 24/47, and several others, you can reach 2800 FPS, which is right on par with the .308 Winchester. You should be able to get 2500 with a 200 grain bullet with the slower for cartridge powders, which would be good for elk out to 250 yards or so, providing you get a decent set of sights or a scope and can hit with it. In my Lee manual, I see 3 pages of info. For a 170 grain bullet, I see W748 right in the middle, with a max load of 46and a starting of 40.5. That will bring between 2150 to 2400 FPS. I wouldn't use that particular bullet on elk, but would use another one. Other powders to look into would be H335, H4350, V-N140, V-N150, H414, and a slew of others. Hope this helps.
