Yeah, nuthing against the 8mm mauser. his rifle is an old piece of cr@p. I actually wouldnt mind an 8mm myself provided the rifle wasnt a junkpile. EJ

I was asked if I've harvested a critter with a 185 corelock and no I haven't Someone else said something about a 8 not being enough gun and to get a 06 wellyou can put the8 x 57 right beside a 30-06 and it's 2 nickels verses a dime with a bigger frontal area, there is no doupt that the 8 is enough gun for elk just my 2 pennies oh and I've settled on 45 3031 (good powder and works well for me) as my max load for the 185s and 45.5 for the 170s

Once again, the 8X57JS is a great cartridge, but one must be very careful with a junk gun regardless of chambering! I still think this guy needs to have his clunker "certified safe" by someone who can make valid pronouncements in this area..... like a good gunsmith! Before he shoots ANYTHING in it!

You sound like a pretty nice guy trying to help some one out, but this sounds like one of the times you need to remember Nancy Reagan, "just say no". There are many things to consider when reloading for an old mauser. One of the big questions is when was it made? My wife Kathy has a sporterized mauser her father brought from WW II. Her rifle was made in 1939. Rifles made early in the was are great to sporterize. The steel is top grade. By 1944 the mauser rifles had started down hill. Metallurgy was not as good as it once was and tolerances became something wished for rather than kept. I urge you to require that this rifle be inspect by a good gunsmith before you load for it to determine if it's safe to fire. Remember, I don't care how hard you work to give this person good safe ammo, if it doesn't kill, dress out the game and wrap the meat, it will all be your fault. I doubt if this man would not spread his dissatisfaction around where you work. You don't nees that, I think would be a good one to walk away from. Sorry.

PS...As for the 8mm cartridge. It is an excellent cartridge. I've worked uo a load for it that pushed the 175 grain Sierra bullet at 2715 fps. this load has taken several deer, antelope and elk. This cartridge is a good one for North America,

I agree Bigbob, He is on his own and it was a mistake for me to reload for him. I did make hime do everything, but he still did use my re-loading equipment. He and I are done re-loading together.
How much could I get a good old 8mm for? and where?

ejpaul1,

The market for WW II mausers has just about dried up.If I were looking for one I'd check Shotgun News, hock shops, want ads and the old standbys the gun shows. The tighter your requirements are, the longer it will take to find the one you want. But hold out for a good one. As for price, I haven't a clue.

Well, I might just wait for the federal .338 to come out then. It would seem a better choice. I wonder who is slated to build rifles chambered in the new federal .338? And there is always that 270 WSM I have been wanting,,,,,,,,,,, EJ

If you are looking for a mauser, a yugo m48 or 24/47 will cost about $100-150, I just saw one in a dunham's store for $79 the other day. http://aimsurplus.com/acatalog/Rifles.html

The best 8mm out there, if you don't mind spending $200 and having a full length battle rifle is the persian 98/29.

http://samcoglobal.com/rifles.html#m9829 The same site has russian captured K98s too- good rifles that are rearsenalled, but the bolts will not match the receivers but will be headspaced correctly.

Orrr you could do like I did, I put a new stainless 23" ER shaw barrel on a V24 action, this was a make it right gun so there is a little more money in it than needs be the barrel was 200, the bell & carlson stock was around 90, the hinged commercial trigger guard was around 75 the bold trigger was 45, the bolt work was 45, For the money I would of been better off getting a new charles daly rifles say a 270 (30-06,25-06 etc) and rebarrel it. I do have a yugo 24/47 that came in with a new barrel (had to finish chambering it) and it shoots really well(got a target around here some where 4 shots in 1 hole at 50) but thatis the luck of the draw. or rebarrel a Howa or any other action as far as that goes.
