I feel that you want to keep the objective end of the scope as close to the barrel as possible without touching it. This helps keep the line of sight close to the bore line. I have used Leupold and/or Redfield mounts and rings almost exclusively for years and never had any regrets. The rings come in various heights for different applications. Yeah, they cost a little more, but are worth it in my opinion.
