Sounds like gibblet gave you lots of good advise. I'd also recommend getting a video. It really helps the learning process. I learned from Larry Wise's video. His technique has worked wonderfully for me. I typically get no more than 1/16" creep on a 100" string after many thousands of shots. The two most important aspects of string building are to make strings that don't creep and ones where the servings don't separate. If you can do that, then nothing else matters.
