Default RE: Why the Hatred towards Coyotes?

Trapper Dave, your facts are a little misleading. Deer densities are higher now, but much of the reason people notice more deer is due to human expansion. The more people expand into the deers' range, the more they adapt, and the more human/deer interaction is seen. As far as coyotes effects on deer population, the yearling mortality rate in ranges where there is signifantly more coyotes was 5 times that of areas with lower numbers of coyotes. Another interesting fact is that the buck to doe ratios were much worse (more does than bucks) in the ranges with more coyotes. It is theorized that this is due to the strain put on bucks in those areas from the rut followed by the PA rifle hunting season making bucks weaker and thus easier targets for the yotes. Granted some of those bucks were taken during the rifle season, but areas that higher numbers of coyotes showed more bucks being lost through the winter months. I wish I could find my notes from class on this, but I have moved 3 times since college and thought I would never use that data again so it's probably gone, but I'll look anyway.
