When I grew up my pap would have us collecting those walnuts. We'd take them into the shed and remove the green shell and put the walnuts in baskets to dry out. The problem was that the green shell would stain your hands brown/black for days. Was always hard to go to school and explain to the other kids why my hands were that way. lol
The next year we smartened up and started wearing gloves.
