Congratulations on your new english pointer pup. Rick and Ronnie Smith has a newDVD out on conditioning your puppyfor training later. It has an excellent section on crate conditioning:

Make the crate a place of safety for the puppy. Use a comfortable bedding. When putting the puppy in the crate, say, "crate"orsome word then when travelling, you canuse the same command.
If you snore at night, you won't need to tap the crate. It iswhining because of separation anxiety and if the puppy knows you're there it should settle down after a few minutes.
Concerning your question, I've heard some people water the pup less at night but I never tried it. Just displine yourself to letting the puppy out. I would suggest you get that DVD. NAVDIA trainning book is okay but an english pointer is not really a verstile dog.
